You should have started 10 years ago, before Glenn Beck and his
cronies artificially inflated the value beyond its actual worth.

I was lucky to have gold left me by relatives. Back when it was
~$30-$35 an ounce (government forced a false under value on gold.) At
that time it was easy to sell it to jewelers at $75 and upwards.

$75.00 dollars, back then, would roughly buy the equivalent of what
$1,400 will buy today ... around 18x inflation of the money.

Or, understand it this way: ~$2,000 back then would have bought me a
nice car! Around $38,000 today will still buy me that car ...

Strange how in coinsides with the value of gold! ROFLOL

JS

Actually, I should have extrapolated, for clarity: A $1.00 candy bar,
today, was $0.05, if I remember correctly a postage stamp was $0.03, and
a gallon of gas was >$0.20 ... so, as you can plainly see, a lot of
people thought gold was "artificially inflated!" -- well, something like
that ...

So! You're saying that going off the gold standard made no
difference, then? Could be. In any case, it's no better an
investment than candy bars ;-)

Well, I don't think it really made any difference if our government ever
recognized gold (precious metals) as the only real money system, or not.
World leaders certainly did, the Shah of Iran even had gold cast into
a toilet on his airplane, etc. and attempted to escape the country with
his gold, Gaddafi, if he ever flees the country, will attempt to take
the ton-and-a-half of gold he has with him (probably much more gold in
actuality.)

The earliest books of the bible recognize gold as wealth ... even
further back, there is evidence that gold was bartered/traded.

Gold is not just a "flash in the pan", "new fangled", invention of
wealth and a method of storing, maintaining and conveying wealth!

AND, it is a much better investment than candy bars!!! I can't even
imagine what shape it would be in, nor how it would taste, being 50
years old! Plus, my wife and kids would have eatin' 'em all!

ROFLOL

I am retired, I put my money where my mouth is. Since interest paid on
safe investments is/are so low, and since I don't have an addiction to
gambling (the stock market,) I am 90%+ in physical gold ... any money
end up with, after expenses, I currently put in savings, I do so with
PHYSICAL GOLD!

It may not be for everyone ... as always, I would recommend the advice
of a good investment counselor ... preferably one which has clients
which came out ahead of the economic collapse and will give you
reference attesting to his/her qualifications.

You must be a decade plus my senior. I recall, at age 11, in 1966, buying
candy bars for a nickel, Tootsie Rolls two for a penny, a Coke from a
machine for a dime, bread for 25 cents a loaf, and pumping gas at 31
cents/gal. for 87 octane regular. Postage stamps were a nickel for first
class, 4 cents for a post card.

$2,000 would have gotten you a Pinto. Today you can get a similar car
from Kia or Hyundai for about 9 grand.

Pintos didn't exist for at least two decades beyond the time he's referring
to, which seems to be around 1955-1960, or thereabouts. At that time, $2000
was pretty standard for a car. Even the original Mustang cost under $3000 in
1964. About the only cars you couldn't get in the late 50's for around that
mark were high end Chryslers, Cadillacs, etc.

Also, I wanna know where you can get a Kia or a Hyundai for $9000.. you
can't even get one here in Korea for that kind of money.

My grandparents left me gold coins and nice nuggets from the gold rush
era. Now, unless I find gold coins at a real steal, from people who
don't know what they have, I always purchase bullion -- my favorites are
little ~1 oz ingots which once were very common and are now very
collectible -- but I won't pay higher than what the gold is actually
quoted at, at the time of purchase, plus a small fee for the transaction
(I have paid higher than value for VERY old bullion coming from the gold
rush era.) The firm I deal with is in San Fransisco and has been in
business for over 100 years and is family owned.

Between jobs, one of my sons went around to flea markets, public
functions and rented a small corner store and bought/sold gold. During
this time it was unbelievable who would show up with gold (you would
wonder where the winos and drug addicts were getting all of it?) and
sell it for pennies on the dollar! He turned me onto a lot of great
deals during that time -- however, pressure from law enforcement and
government were constantly a hassle and in latter years had gotten much
worse -- today the paperwork and such must be a real pain!

The Numismatic value of the coins would not have the value they have
today in a very dramatic crisis, indeed, in a "total meltdown" of the
economy the numismatic value would likely fall to ZERO! Never pay,
invest in or count on any "perceived/imagined value!" -- RULE NO. 1.

You can watch the "gold wars" here:
http://www.goldalert.com/2011/04/gold-silver-fall-as-china-steps-up-inflation-fight/

Market manipulations of gold/metals is always fun to watch!

My two favorite "hobbies" are keeping aquariums and raising exotic
fish/aquatic-species and collecting gold -- I actually like the
aquariums better ...

I am sure there were gas wars long after the normal prices rose above
.20 cents ...

But, perhaps I did exaggerate, it was half a century ago ... I'll admit,
I don't have that good of a memory ... I'll up that to >0.30 cents and
stand corrected!

Early this morning when the wife and I went a few blocks for breakfast,
I filled on the way back, $4.19 a gallon! And, that is one of the
cheaper stations around here ... $4.37 is the highest I have seen, to date.

Anyway you cut it, it was almost $60 to take it from a 1/4 tank to full
... :-(

Here in California, you can get a "Medical Marijuana Card" (actually
just certification from a doctor), allows you to grow up to six budding
plants with six starter plants as backup.

Or, you can simply go to a medical marijuana dispensary and buy it.

All the claims by all the nutjobs that this would be bring on a whole
slew of problems, or worsen existing ones, were total BS. But, now
government is attempting to figure out a whole slew of ways to make
money off this ... I expect by the time they are done, the whole slew of
problems there were speaking of will fall upon our heads!

If you ask someone on the streets, "Have you noticed problems from
legalizing medical marijuana?", half or better don't even know it has
been legalized, don't care, and haven't noticed anything but the
same-old-same-old -- I had suspected it would all be like that. Even
the people who were screaming of how dangerous it would be to legalize
medical marijuana have disappeared!

Only makes you wonder what else is a big lie by government ...

Soon as I get through with working my attic, I am going to fence in my
back yard. Then I will go to Hutto's yard and garden center on Ellis
Avenue and ask them what kind of vines or whatever I can plant in the
ground along my fence.I want something that grows fast that will
completely cover the wire fence, and something that doesn't die off in
the Winter time.I would like to plant some POISON IVY, but the damn city
MOFOs would make me get rid of it.

I have been in California most of my life, for me has been the best
weather, best employment/pay, best place to own a business, best
recreation, best beaches, etc. It still is a decent place to retire to
... and serves me well in this ...

Some of that is no longer true ... unfortunately. Crime is bad,
unemployment is astronomical, pay is poor, businesses are closing,
homelessness abounds, etc.

However, I always felt that the only reason we had earthquakes was to
attract tourists and reap the money "earthquake tourism" brings in.

Of course, for decades now, most of us in California have been praying
san fransicko would break off and fall into the ocean ... and down
south, the LA area, has experienced notable damage, in the past.

But, pretty much, earthquakes are pretty ho-hum to the natives here ...

String up a couple of electric wire with a good "shocker" hooked up to 'em.

Get a great and funny infrared video to post up on the web which will
give us all a good laugh! :-)

Seen a cheap electric fence charger for $39.95 at the local cheap tool
outlet here ... that and some old wire and a handful of insulators
should get some action going!
