My stepdad (a real winner... ) used to go around central Utah in the mid
60's with a buddy of his and steal copper from the overhead lines. I think
one night he came home with about half a mile of wire to burn and sell
(copper ran about 65 cents a pound at the time, IIRC). He also raided a
closed down mine once. Used to have an old steel washer tub in the back yard
where he'd burn the insulation off.
He was a Marine.... so much for honor, huh?

I bought an old manufacturing plant for the property. In the buildings
there was a lot of copper, brass, aluminum scrap, etc. The grand kids
got busy and picked out all the copper wire, fittings, pipe, etc. and
took it to the scrap yard where they got somewhere close to 3 bucks a
pound ... if you were to buy it, you'd pay more!
Antioch is only about 30 - 40 miles from me ...

Just before moving to Korea, I lived in Stockton, just a couple blocks off
March Ln. Trying to remember the street, but it was in a bunch of
apartments. If I looked out my window in the general direction of Lodi, the

punched into google maps, should show you the exact position. It would
not have been built, you are correct, it is only a handful of years old,
although the older walmart it replaced, just across hammer lane,
diagonally, might have been, not sure ... they have been trying to put a
super wally world in Lodi, for years now, the people there have resisted
it -- kinda silly really, as the indians from mexico are a real problem
there, don't see how a super walmart is going to attract that many more
problems there!
Although you can still find pockets of vietnamese/cambodians about, they
tend to run prostitution out of beauty salons and drugs. They seem to
have slowed down on ripping up the housings flooring and planting plants
on the dirt floors, defecating/urinating in their yards, etc. It is a
mystery where they all work, or even if they do? Asian gangs battle the
negro and indian (mexican) gangs for turf, this no longer is even
considered mentioning, in the paper, anymore, as you never see it in
print, although if forced out at night, medical clinic, craving for some
food, etc., you see them about ...
Stockton has been hit VERY HARD with both legal and illegal aliens, it
has not had a good effect on it. This is as close to a 3rd world
country on American soil that I have ever seen, although I have seen
very bad areas down south, also. And, along the borders of the border
states, it can be much more dangerous, still, at night, it is unsafe to
travel most areas of the city here, at least without a weapon.
Such things as purse snatching, muggings, car thefts, etc. fail to hit
the paper, you just see or hear about the after effects at you go about
the city and chat with victims ... I think this is very dangerous. As,
you meet people who have moved here, they you see them and they are
leaving/moving because of some element victimizing them, etc.
Most residents here have just "become numb" to the worsening problems,
just like that proverbial "frog in the pan of boiling water", but
newbies who are stupid enough to move here, end up being shocked when
they have been here to realize the underlying conditions.
I am sure there are as bad as areas around California, but living on the
outskirts, and having lived within the city boundaries, I have see the

deny all of this, and increase property value and people to come to
stockton -- it can be quite funny to watch, if you can ignore the
dangers it poses to families ... heck, who knows, Korea might be a safer

In stockton,ca, when then mention race or show pics/videos, it is blacks
and indians from mexico (and unknown parts.)
There is no new construction in the area which doesn't have security on
the premises just to keep the copper and building materials from being
stolen while the buildings are under construction.
You even see whole buildings, both residential and commercial, being
completely gutted ... a bank foreclosure means that building is going to
mess, and quickly! I think the crooks use the foreclosure notices as
shopping lists!
