I've never been a big fan of TAF as I thought the game was a lot of
stop and go with little flow and most of the ones I've played have been
pretty blown out
This one is different
First, let's be really clear, Chris is the number one restorer of
pinball machines in the history of the hobby
No one is even close on a full time professional basis
When I hear Grover talking about putting "stickers" on a machine and
how it is "better than nothing", it shows how little he really knows
about pinball
The game Chris did for me has new decals, a new IPB playfield and just
about everything else that was remade for TAF and the game is awesome
Better than any game Mr. Grover ever had
You have to see it, play it, listen to it, touch it, to really believe
what Chris has accomplished with his work
Chris is pure talent in every way
Anyway, if you are looking for an absolutely beautiful pinball machine
restored to better than new in the box standards ....
Call Chris Hutchins ....
His games are worth every single penny ....
take care ...

No disrespect to Chris but when you make statements like this you
disrespect gentlemen such as Ray Johnson
http://www.aros.net/~rayj/action/index.htm who have proven themselves
as (full time) master restorers for many years before you even owned a
pinball machine. If you had known about Ray's work you wouldn't make
this blanket statement.
Once again you go blabbing about something without knowing all the details.

Anybody can take a game that may look like a POS and make it look new
again with all new stuff. I have rebuilt over 1000 games in the last 18
years, Some come out looking great, others not so great. But give me
all new art work, playfield, ramps, stickers, decals, etc...etc...etc.
and I can do it up just as good as the best of them. It's great that
you give credit to your guy, but I assure you that he is not the only

Gary:
I took personal exception to the above comment, since it proclaimed
that a restored Adams Family could be better than a mint DP Funhouse.
You *might* have had a basis to speculate on that *if* I had not sent
you photos of my FH after I got it from Grover, so your comment was way
over the top, unless you truly believe your TAF is better than my FH.
If you think that, just ask yourself this question: if my mint DP FH
and a Chris Hutchins' "better than new" restored FH were both put up
for sale at the same time and place, which one would bring the higher
price?
BUT, despite your put down of my FH from Grover and implication I would
have done better to spend less and get a restored Hutchins' FH, I saw
no need to claim you were trolling with your post and I didn't take it
that way. I think those who did take it that way let the past influence
their reaction. I bet if someone else... almost anyone else... had
authored that post the initial comments which disagreed with it would
not have had the same harsh tone and the string would not have turned
ugly. That's the trouble with this newsgroup as there are far too many
personal attacks introduced into subjects which start out on a pinball
topic and then degenerate into spitting contests.
As I see it, you were probably very excited over TAF when you got it
and were breathless (although not wordless) about how it appeared, so
you let your enthusiasm dictate the content of your gushing post.
While I assume that most everyone thinks as highly as you do of the
jobs Chris does, from what I have gathered over the ten months I have
discovered this RGP, there appear to be others who are just as highly
regarded when it comes to doing exceptional restoration jobs. If
memory serves correctly, I believe I have seen posts praising Bill
Davis and Chad Keller, but you can correct me if I am wrong. And if you
do express a different opinion I will not take offense (although others
may) and I just hope this post has not offended you (or anyone else)
since that was not my intent as I am simply expressing my honest
opinion.

you can take any of the 5000 trashed out funhouses out there and slap
overlays, redo fields and cab decals on with repro ramps and parts and
make one *look* new. nothing special about that or original about it.
just have to pay someone to do the work or do it yourself.
gary, you have a what was a trashed out turd, which htere are roughly
8000 of those on the planet and ALL can be turned into the game you
have.
your ignorance has you running around behind private e-mails like a

you can take any trashed out Fiero and make it into a Lamborghini with
a new kit, but you DON'T have a real Lamborghini and never will ;-)
now you are embarassing chris to no end and stamping your utter

bob and MANY others, don't want simply done up what were turd taf's and
fh's but true original factory games, probably is, it is easier to just
throw money out the window to get the games you buy gary, instead of
taking months or even years to find that original cherry game.
for the cash you are paying you could find cherry ass huo games BUT you
don't have the connections or leads to find those games so you run the
easy way to find a like new looking game but are not rare and will
never hold their value. shit, i bet noone would even want to sell you
their cherry ass original since they know you wouldn't appreciate it,
so they would rather sell for less to someone else who would play and
appreciate the game. nor do you have the determination to hunt these
types of games down yourself.
Gary and his REPRO TAF ( estimate )
2500 for basic game
2000 for chris's effort ( in my book invaluable )
500 shipping ( game to chris and game to gary )
100 crating
170 plastics
50 new bookcase and parts
250 cab decals
75 new rails
150 mods
150 in misc. parts ( flipper rebuilds, pops, sleeves etc. )
450 IPB field
200 clearcoat and touch-ups on IPB repro field
total 6595 ( my guestimate )
i have NO CLUE what the actual costs were, but this was made from my
common sense judgement.
so before i drop that kinda cash, why wouldn't one hunt down a perfect
original which will hold it's value...
please continue to post and destroy yourself and embarass others along

That's a pretty damned good endorsement from someone who does work like

Bryan only does his own machines. Out of the folks I can think of that do
*this* level of restoration work, there simply aren't many who will do it

First of all, I have never seen your work. I know from people that I
trust that your work is fantastic. You charge what you feel is fair for

My entire point is that YOU are not alone in being able to do fantastic
creations which Gary seems to think you are (no fault of your own).
When someone comes on here saying that you are the one great restore

Well I just remembered you actually have your *name* in the

So since he is gonna crow about spending his money I'll
figure: 3K or so for the TAF - 1K for parts (including PF)
2K for your work - 300 for shipping, etc...
So gawee paid roughly $6500 for a TAF with the IPB
PF... not saying there is anything right/wrong about it

To give you a direct answer, "No, I did not 'defend' myself." I simply
pointed out that a personal comment directed to one specific person is
not an invitation for a response to that comment by someone else, even
if it is posted publicly. I mentioned Robert's since it serves as a

The saying "Laughter, the Best Medicine" may have come from the heading
of a long standing Reader's Digest Magazine column that goes back to
about when the magazine first began. Speculation is that the Reader's
Digest author was inspired by Proverb 17:22 in The Book of Proverbs, "A
merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the

Now don't flame me for quoting from the Book of Proverbs on a

Okay, fine. But what is your point in saying *anything* like "more power
to you if you can get it." That's sounds condemning in some way. It seems
like your point is that it's somehow "better" to be in this hobby purely
for enjoyment and not for money at all.
I'd agree *if* there were a shortage of good people in the hobby that help
one another out and are willing to do things for their buddies. But there
isn't. It's not a hobby full of pimps. There are a few, but this hobby
isn't driven by them.
What's worse is that people like Chris, who do a great job for a fair
price, seem to get caught in some cross fire that's a combination of
outright attack and innuendo and snide condemnation. I just don't
understand why people here aren't thankful that this hobby is strong enough
that it can sustain folks like Chris. Sure, it might make some titles and
some rare parts more valuable by virtue of keeping more big pocket
collectors around, but ultimately it will likely help even more by getting
more parts reproduced, too. I see it as a win-win. I'd like to see more
businesses that could be sustained by pinball.
And no, I don't expect folks like yourself to run out thanking Chris for
what he does. You don't need his services and wouldn't use them. That's
fine. But what purpose did your initial comments serve, then? Maybe I
just misread them, but they seemed at least overtly condemning.

Get out of the kitchen is my best advice, then.
As for me, yes, I'm not, nor ever will be a customer
of his. Nor will I be a customer of anyone else that
does the type of work he does. Yes, to me, it's
silly to spend that kind of money on a pin. I stated
that at the beginning. I also do not believe a game
done in such a manner is "worth more" or "better than NIB"
than a non-molested pin in a similar condition. I also
(at this point), could care less if new parts are made
for old games. We'll get by just as we have been for years.
My guess is you're going to see even fewer businesses
supported by pinball. The customers aren't supporting
them...
(And you can still buy a NEW pin for less money.)
You implied that I would _have_ to charge for my services
if I spent the time Chris does on a game. I'm stating
that isn't so. He stated a figure in his post, and I see
that to be too much money. Just an observation, not
a condemnation. And no, it doesn't somehow make
me or anyone else "better" for doing something for
just the hobby.
That's been beat to death around here...

other "High End" restorer gets, there are 50 people who do it
themselves on a budget. Pinball is not and never should be a hobby for
the rich. There are a handful of collectors out there who have a
S$%^load of $$$$ and dropping $8K restoring a pin is no big deal. They
will always solicit the restorers. The rest of us will keep doing it
ourselves for what we deem a reasonable amount of money.
So the bottom line:
Those that use high end restorers: Good for you, . . I hope you love
the games but don't gloat that that is the only way to do it and your
games are the best
Those that don't use high end restorers: Good for us, . . .We love our
games too, but that doesn't make our games any better than theirs.
Good pins are good pins. There are several ways to get them there, and
I could care less which route people choose.
Amen, brother. The post had nothing to do with CH's restoration and
everything to do with flashing money around. A comment like "the one
with the most CH pins when they die wins" or "you guys are just
jealous" does not come from someone who enjoys the game.
Collecting a game to show off more than play is somewhat mind boggling.
Kirb
... and throwing out comments pertaining to your ability to do all of
your own work is condesending to those of us that do not. I read one of
your messages on this thread last night and got that distinct
impression. I am more in the middle of you and Gary as I am not
completetly helpless (I can fix most repairs) but certainly don't do
playfield swaps, board work (extensive).
So yes, I have bought all of my machines running with no error reports.
My machines are in nice shape. Maybe not TC or CH, but they are fine to
me (MM, MB, CV, AFM, and Sopr)
Last time I checked, you didn't come on here bragging to everyone about
your sweet games. I also don't think you are buying games to use as
show pieces to look at and never play.
I do not assume that everyone can fix a game. Much of the design of
these games is far outside of most people's skill level. You missed my
point if you think I am bagging on all who don't know the games inside
and out.
Don't take comments about one troll and apply them to you.
Kirb
> Funny, gary and kirb's argument wasn't directed at you either, yet you
> felt the need to defend your machine's honor (or whatever you call it).
> Gotta love the irony.
If you love irony, how about your own comment (10/20 12:02 p.m.) on
the subject, "WTB: NOS Yellow lightning flippers" where you stated:
"There's nothing wrong with thinking that decals are inferior to
original... but it's rude to (repeatedly) spout out unsolicited
criticism, tearing down this guy's restoration, for no other reason
than to inflate your own ego. That's not 'competition' .. it's just
rude."
To see the irony, replace your reference to "tearing down this guy's
restoration" (in your above 10/20 statement), with your prior 10/20
2:01 comment in *this* string, "Retzner's post was 3 paragraphs in
defense of some perceived knock on his precious funhouse"
But maybe you see a distinction and still don't think that your
unsolicited criticism of me and my "precious" FH wasn't rude by your
own definition.
> ... anyone who will take "personal exception" to some stupid, flippant
> usenet comment
Your above statement appears to me to be just an excuse and snide way
to perpetuate your attack upon Gary in this string. I didn't regard
Gary's remark as stupid or flippant, I simply did not agree with it and
expressed that along with the reason why.
> *just* because it MIGHT be interpreted as saying a
> particular pinball machine they own MIGHT not be as nice as they
> think..
It wasn't just what *I* thought it was also what Grover thought and I
was supporting his views, but you seem to have ignored that entirely.
> jeez dude, get a life!
I mentioned earlier how some RGP strings tend to degenerate into
spitting contests and here you prove my point. Your ability to
constantly generate enough saliva to spit out unsolicited insults, puts
me in mind of that line in the Jackie Wilson song, Lonely Teardrops,
which goes, "Never Dry Up."
The bottom line here is that you can condemn Gary all you want just
don't condemn me for not joining you in your attacks. And don't get me
wrong here since I have found most of your posts and comments to be
quite worthwhile. In fact I especially agree with you that unsolicited
insults are rude by anyone's definition. And that includes the similar
views expressed by Major Henry M. Robert who formulated Robert's Rules
of Order, obviously not to be applied to newsgroups, but which have
merit in their concepts.
Bob
I probably don't even have to mention it as anyone with a brain can
clearly see it
For the record, I have a lot of beater games here like SF2 and Pistol
Poker and I enjoy them as well. I probably couldn't give them away
I used to get slammed here because my collection didn't have enough
nice WMS titles .... Now I add the WMS titles and you guys don't like
that either
Some of you guys don't like very much of anything, do you?
=)
Gary/Arizona
Actually, this thread is just more of the same crap I was talking about
in *that* thread.. people who have nothing better to do than sit
online and brag about how nice their games are (you and that funhouse)
and how not-nice everyone else's games are (grover calling that FT
blown out).
> It wasn't just what *I* thought it was also what Grover thought and I
> was supporting his views, but you seem to have ignored that entirely.
Just the opposite - I called both you AND grover out on this crap. It
was not ignored at all.
> > jeez dude, get a life!
>
> I mentioned earlier how some RGP strings tend to degenerate into

Um, that wasn't an insult, it was a suggestion. Seriously.
> The bottom line here is that you can condemn Gary all you want just
> don't condemn me for not joining you in your attacks. And don't get me
I'm not condemning Gary at all.. he's just a troll, a pretty successful
one at that. I condemned you because you felt the need to jump in
*solely* to say that no, his TAF is NOT is nice as your "mint DP
Funhouse", and you want to make sure the whole of RGP knows that!
Wait, condemnation is way too strong a word, I just think you're nutty.
Tell me, how many people here are going to care which one of you has
nicer games?
This is by far the best post of the thread.
And to answer one of Gary's posts...Sorry, Gary, but I'd still take a NIB
game over a CH restored game. I'd also never sit on it as an
investment...I'd uncrate that sucker and make it HUO and enjoy playing it.
I'm not going to even get into which one would "look" better. I think part
of the problem here too is that some of the people who are arguing with you
also don't like cleared playfields (especially those that didn't *need* it)
and we know some of them think decals are inferior no matter what. So this
argument is *done*. It's been boiled down to a matter of personal taste,
and nobody wins that argument. We know where everyone stands on it, so
there isn't any use debating further.
Can you now help Gary turn on his games!!! :)
You were slammed here for your attitude. No one would care WHAT
pinballs you have if you were a normal poster who didn't try to stir up
a hornet's nest when you post. You keep trying to turn the focus away
from YOU, Gary P Cubeta.
So, that radio gig you had. What happened? Not a lot of need for a
"left wing flame thrower" down in AZ?
You have avoided every question since you announced your fabulous web
page with little content....much like your show, I assume.
Kirb
You only need to turn them on if you intend on playing them. He doesn't
have that problem.
Isn't any worse than someone who buys a collectable car to let it sit
in a garage. The only thing that is different is that the car will
increase in value and a high priced pinball will be worth far less much
quicker.
Kirb
Turn the attention away from you again. I could care a less about your
games. I don't like many of the titles you have. I would never own a
TAF unless it was cheap, for example.
> On one hand you argue that I am such a failure and on the other hand he
> is jealous because I have such "expensive" games
Actually, I was asking a question. You came on here puffing your chest
about your fabulous radio gig.
> You make zero sense ....
Try to keep up.
> I never had a "radio gig" as you call it
>
> Along with some friends of mine, we are working on starting a radio
> network
Not what you said back in the day. I guess I will have to wait to hear
your fabulous network when it gets picked up in Michigan. I won't hold
my breath, mr flame thrower.
> Is it easy, noooooo .....
>
> Is it even worth doing .... not sure
>
> but we have a better chance of accomplishing it if we keep an upbeat
> attitude, rather than just being jealous of everyone who is a success
> which seems to be your plan for the day
Sorry man, jealous of no one. You have nothing to be jealous of. Who
would want to be you? Really, think about that. You draw deserved fire
and feed on it. You live for it here. I guess you have me, in part, to
thank.
You are welcome
Kirb
Neil.
You know if you guys would quit responding to the
rgp dingleberry my killfile would actually have a fighting
chance ;-)

I, for one, consider this very heavily when debating whether or not to
do business with someone. If they can't appreciate quality and own
fine machines, then I don't want what they're selling.
Nuff said.
Just can't keep you away from a good troll thread, eh? Get back to
slacking off on IRC :)
