if the overlay is clearcoated with an auto urethane, the properties
of the overlay/ball are changed. I don't think the ball cares
what the substrate is. The ball only cares about the top coat,
which is now 'diamondplate'. So an clearcoated overlay plays
(exactly) the same as a clearcoated wood playfield.
Regardless though, I agree with Fred Kemper's view of overlays.
They are a last resort, and they don't make a game more valuable.
They are for games that have destroyed playfields, giving
them some reason to not be parted-out.
That all a-side, this has nothing to do with C Hitchens. I mean
who cares if he can restore a game or not? I don't remember this
forum being rec.games.whoisthebestrestorer. This is a forum to
exchange ideas and thoughts. Not a place to corner people and
challange them like a high school football game. I don't think anyone
has anything to prove here.

Wow, well said. I'm gonna stay away from Chris -- looks like he just slit
his own throat. What kind of fool would pass up the opportunity to restore
a machine for you to critique? Everyone respects you and your opinions so
much...you've contributed so much to the group, you're sort of a father
figure to most of us.

good news reader like Netscape 4.8 or Agent, Xnews, there are lots out
there. Heck you can even use Outlook Express which is most likely
already on your computer. Then you simply subscribe to rgp and add his
email to your filters, he has two so be aware.

haven't read the book yet but I understand it's a good read. I am
disturbed (as I'm sure others are) to hear that he is unable to write a
coherent email. As a celebrated author, he most certainly should be
able to put together a simple piece of writing. What a shame.
Now Christopher Hutchins is a husband, father and pinball restorer.
Though I have read about 200 of his emails and found them to be pretty
lucid, I honestly was more concerned with his ability to restore my
precious games then whether he was up for the Hugo award.
As for a challenge, Hutchins has accepted mine! Guess you have to put a
little money on the line to get anyone to take you seriously. Anyway,
he is going to restore my proto ES w/ NOS pf. This is no simple task!
The pf is NOS but has crazing and the cabinet is screened and needs
repair and repainting. To boot the 17 year old game is a System 11
which quite frankly is a BEAR to work on. This will be an exhaustive,
time consuming labor of love (not to mention costly).
Since you are unable or unwilling to put your money where your mouth
is, gary, guess I'll have to do it for you. I will post extensive
before and after pics in the coming months. I'll venture to say this
will exhibit some unbelieveable skills that few possess in the
restoration business.
Now this is the last time I'm going to bail you out gary. As for Mr.
Hitchins, sorry man you're on your own. (shaking my head) Such a damn
shame.
