Pedestrian Dies After Being Hit in Crosswalk Driver Arrested

GLENDALE -- A 41-year-old pedestrian in a marked crosswalk was struck
and killed Saturday evening by a motorist later arrested on suspicion of
drunk driving, according to police.

The unidentified victim was crossing Colorado Boulevard at Langley
Street with his wife and 10-year-old son when they were hit about 8:15
p.m., said Sgt. Jim Woody of the Glendale Police Department.

"The 10-year-old was riding his Razor scooter, while his parents were
walking behind him," Woody said.

They were in the crosswalk when struck by a car westbound on Langley,
Woody said. The father suffered severe head injuries. All three were
taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where the man died
later that night. The mother and son were treated for minor injuries.

The driver, Jerome Hanken (President of Chess Journalist of America),
66, of Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving,
Woody said.

This article was posted by Mr. Labate on Susan's blog. What was the
outcome of this incident? Is it even true?

Because the Trolgar camp is utterly desperate and trying to slime anyone
they can as a decoy from Truong's wrongdoing. I did an LA Times archive
search to see if there was a follow up story and there wasn't one to be
found in the archive.

As a moderator, I edited out Jerry's name until it could be verified.

Sadly, it is a true story, and it can't be supressed just because it
might be embarassing.

Surely Brian Lafferty promotes free speech, right?

It wasn't suppressed -- eight years ago. What is the point of
publishing it now? How does it fit into your moderation standards? I
do not know if you are trying to attack or slur Mr. Hanken, what the
outcome was, or if there is more news to come, or what kind of context
is involved at all? What is the point of allowing that on a moderated
forum?

I really do not understand Gregory....

I didn't post it, a user did, and I can't remove it just because it is
'8 years old' JD.

It is an issue, and it looks like it was hidden quite well. For the
people that state that this is slime-- someone died due to Jerry's
actions. I would be more forgiving if Jerry actually admitted it, and
apologized if he did something wrong.

What you are saying implies that he was tried and convicted. Is this

A university student while visiting Gasan asked him: "Have you ever
read the Christian Bible?"

"No, read it to me," said Gasan.

The student opened the Bible and read from St. Matthew: "And why take
ye thought for rainment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they
grow. They toil not, neither do they spin, and yet I say unto you that
even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these...
Take therefore no thought for the morrow, for the morrow shall take
thought for the things of itself."

Gasan said: "Whoever uttered those words I consider an enlightened
man."

The student continued reading: "Ask and it shall be given you, seek
and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you. For everyone
that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth, and to him that
knocketh, it shall be opened."

Gasan remarked: "That is excellent. Whoever said that is not far from
Buddhahood."

Gregory, this was discussed ad nausium here on rgcp back in 2000 when it
happened. My understanding is that there was no DWI. It is my further
understanding that Mr. Hanken had the matter resolved through the
courts to his and the state's satisfaction.

Now as to free speech, I suspect that you know that is not the issue
here. The issue is relevancy to anything going on with the USCF and its
executive board. The only relevancy Mr. Hanken has to that is in
relation to Ms. Polgar and Mr. Truong's bald, unsupported assertions
that Mr. Hanken engaged in settlement negotiations (as is any USCF
member's right--I've done it with Sam myself) during which he revealed
confidential board information. Despite calls by Mr. Sloan and others
for Trolgar to specify what information was leaked improperly, no
information from your bosses has been presented.

Rather, what we have now, sanctioned by Trolgar on their blog and
implemented via you as their web minion, is an irrelevant attack on Mr.
Hanken's character based on an old, settled matter involving an
unfortunate accident and death of a pedestrian. We all know that the
only, repeat, ONLY reason that surfaced on the Trolgar controlled web
outlet they own, is because they seek to discredit anyone who might have
an impact on them in their litigation with Mr. Sloan.

Gregory, you've become a sleazy as Trolgar. You all deserve each other.

This story was discussed extensively when it happened. There were at
least hundreds and probably thousands of postings about this right
here on this forum.

To bring this up again now, eight years later, is just the product of

I am not saying anything regarding Jerry that is not found in the
article. I don't know him.

However, I would be appalled if others would criticize Susan for this,
especially it if came from Jerry's friends like Bill Goichberg. For
them to criticize someone for allowing this post to be made that
indicates that Jerry may have been culpable in the death of person,
yet want to study the potential browsing patterns of someone that they
don't like on the EB smacks of severe hypocrisy.

This matter as reported by the LA Times appears to be a very serious
issue, and yet, I found nothing on the internet. It appears to be a
matter well hidden. If there was no wrong-doing, then if I were Jerry,
I would have long ago disclosed it openly.

Whatever Mr. Hanken did in this matter is between him, the family which
suffered this tragedy and the state of California. I do not know enough
about it to render judgment.

What matters to me is his current or recent conduct, not what happened 8
years ago.

I have personally witnessed a few incidents involving Mr. Hanken in the
past 2 years (one at the US Open in Oak Brook, IL and one in Las Vegas
at the National Open) and I do not condone his behavior and language. It
was quite scary to me on a personal level.

And it smacks of deliberate propaganda and spin to persist in using
the phrase "potential browsing patterns" especially after it's been
pointed out numerous times that "abusive posting practices" would be
much more accurate. Nobody cared about Paul's browsing patterns.

He did. Long ago. All this was common knowledge at the time. You can
easily find dozens of posts from 2001 by doing a keyword search on
rgcp. What exactly is the point of bringing it up again now?

I just searched rgcp through google groups for the search words "Hanken
driving" and got 36 hits. A number of these are dated around 2001.
There was talk of a diabetic condition, and there was talk of false
accusations of a felony. These are certainly reasons for a competent
moderator to be very careful about this topic.

I don't know if he had a conviction, I just verified what the LA Times
said. I am not rehashing this and didn't post it-- someone else did.

If this was discussed a long time ago, and is public knowledge, I
couldn't find it with using google. I tried "Jerry Hanken" arrested
driving, and other keywords, and did not come up with anything. If it

was published long ago, then some of my assessments regarding that is
was hidden appear to be incorrect.

When I did a search this afternoon, I used "Jerry Hanken" Driving, and
"Jerome Hanken" Driving, it brought up no results regarding this
matter. I tried several different combinations without a hit. Google
is quick though, it now brings up two results via this thread.

For those who claim that this is done for political reasons, or that
Susan is behind it somehow, I think that you need your brain checked.
A user made a post, I removed Jerry's name until I could verify it,
and once confirmed that it was accurate, I allowed it. It is a story
that I did not know, and Jerry is a very prominent organizer in
chess.

Bill, re-read the post, it was formed as a question. It is not up to
me to determine a posters 'context', it is up to me to pull it if it
is not accurate, harassing, or excessive. You could cite anything you
want,
and as I moderator, I would allow them as long as it is in the decent
and accurate.

Try being a moderator in an active forum sometime Bill. You will
quickly realize that many of the decisions that you make will be
criticized, sometimes from every angle and side. I am not complaining,
this is par for the course. However, there were no political reasons
for me to accept, or reject the post and I did what I thought fair.

Regards,

Gregory

PS I edited this post, and yes, I should have gotten your drift Bill

Gregory,

You may recall that I made equally pointed statements re Sloan in the
USCF Forum. Even so, I tried to be scrupulous both in citing sources
and supplying context. The posts are still there, and I would be
happy to discuss them (after tax season) with anyone not a party to
the current litigation.

The publication of the Times article is a fact. So too appears to be
the subsequent finding that Hanken was found not to be under the
influence of alcohol. This seems to be essential context. (And yes,
there's context to the context: Hanken does share the blame for the
accidental death of an innocent.)

Maybe I hold you to a high standard because I know that you're a
patriot and a mensch.

Here's my larger concern: what is the purpose of our community, beyond
destroying each other's reputation?

Hi Bill,

Well said. However, I am not sure if the term patriot applies. Thank-
you for the yiddish term though, you are too kind.

As I have stated, I did not know about this incident until this
morning. I have researched since this morning though, and it is tragic
event for all involved. I am sure that Jerry has his deep regrets, as
does the family. I personally was sorry to read about this incident.
This said, this does not change my personal belief that the post
should remain.

On another matter, regarding the divisive nature of our community
causing internal and quite personal fights-- I whole-heartedly agree.
I wish that this were not the case. The personal nature of the fights
within our chess community don't make us look good. Many of us are
just too competitive of a bunch.

The tactics and the arguments tend to be repetitive, and personal
investigations and nasty politics seem to be the order of the day.
Ironically, the fights are not even fun. As a spectator, or even as a
participant, I would much prefer arguing good ol fashioned politics
and religion instead of reading about the personal attacks. Give me an
argument concerning Israel's right to exist, the problems with
religious fanatiscism (on all sides), or even a silly abortion topic
that will not change anyones mind over this personal crap any day.

Indeed. Recall if you will, that Trolgar attacked Joe Lux's character
behind his back during the USCF election campaign. Trolgar also sent a
defamatory letter pertaining to me to the FOC, behind my back, during

Too obvious. You have to hide your identity better. It's in those
angry, non-Buddhist moments that you give yourself away. :-)

Reasonable thesis from your perspective, perhaps. But it's not me,
grasshopper. While I may have suggested autofellatio, I don't practice
it.

:-| <==== Note the blank-faced detachment.

How long will I maintain it? Heh--on that part of the assessment you
have a point ;-)

Back to "I don't practice it": I think the praise is intended by FSS /
FFSS for FSS, anyway: the "satirically expose" defense.

There is something that bothers me about the pedestrian anon(s)--if
one attributes his/her/their words to their "natural" source(s) (I
have other posts in mind), then one has to ask just how stupid that/
those source(s) is/are, given pending litigation.

And if it's someone channeling the natural source to undermine the
latter, that's probably even more stupid--for reasons that s/b self-
evident.

I see the crossword puzzle in the paper every day; I don't feel
compelled to do it.

Aside from the stable handles attached to stable identities (well,
stable for rgcp--our standards are low), easier to just discount the
anons.

Deletion of the posts about Jerry Hanken

Postby SusanPolgar on Tue Apr 08, 2008 7:27 pm
I just deleted the post regarding Mr. Jerry Hanken. Even though I find
a number of his recent actions inappropriate and regrettable, I feel
that it is wrong for anyone to dig up his personal past to embarrass
him.

I feel the same way about some members of the board majority and their
supporters trying to dig up dirt about my personal life or trying to
involve my children for their disgusting political games.

Best wishes,
Susan Polgar
