Accidentally put diesel in gasoline motor which normal uses 87 octane. What
steps should I take to fix this problem and is the damage permanent? I
didn't drive it after fill up. Thanks.

Easiest thing to do is first read the recent thread on diesel engines. Then
remove cylinder head, skim half an inch or so off the top of the block - you
are aiming for a compression ratio of 20:1 or so. Remove the spark plugs and
ignition system and fit some injectors and a pump off an old Mack truck in
their place. Start her up and enjoy stump pulling torque and much better
economy :)

Just kidding - you will need to drain the tank and blow out the fuel line to
the engine. If you haven't started her up at all then there will be no problem
with diesel in the carb. A few drops of diesel left in the system will flush
straight out. You haven't damaged anything.

Siphon diesel out of tank, fill with gas and run it. Running diesel
through a gas engine won't damage it, it'll run a little rough till it
clears.

There are products called "top oilers" on the market that are for
lubricating the valve stems. It is just a light oil similar to Diesel
fuel. Smokes a lot when you use it. Point is, Trapper's suggestion is
correct, and you'll be the benefit of a good top oiling :-) Yup, you'll
even make a smoke screen for awhile.

Empty the fuel tank and fill with fresh clean pref. high octaine use starting
fluid to start eng ine it'll smoke for a little while but wont cause serious
damage.
It smokes because diesel fuel has oils in it

Well, that's one way to put it - actually it smokes because diesel
fuel IS oil...
