Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard only allows the PPP-peer set DNS Server

When using a PPPoE-based connection on a mac
(i.e. direct connection to the DSL modem without a router in
between),
OS X 10.5 seems to only allow the DNS server to be set by the PPP
peer, usually your provider.
In the network prefpane, the two servers given by my provider are grey
and can't be removed/edited. Newly added ones get on the bottom and
therefore probably won't get used.
After 3 hours of googling for answers, i'm stuck with nothing but the
knowledge that this is set in a file called resolv.conf located in
the /etc/ folder, but editing it leads nowhere, since the network
system setting will always change it back to the old way anyway: with
the two dns given by the peer beeing gray & unremovable on top of the
manually entered google DNS servers.
Is there a known solution for this kind of problem, or can you only
use different DNS on leopard when you use a router?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I have the same issue (Mac OS 10.5 w/ greyed, unedittable IP's in
Network Pref Panel). I was thinking this was due to my Telstra
Wireless USB Internet (hence my post in this Group:
http://groups.google.com/group/public-dns-discuss/browse_thread/thread/472358955e59ba89?hl=en)
but perhaps not.

I'll be following this thread, hoping someone can help.

"In the network prefpane, the two servers given by my provider are

You're looking at the wrong place in network prefs pane.

E.q.
Configure: Manually
IP Address: 192.168.2.250
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateaway/Main Router: 192.168.2.1
DNS Server: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

Advanced button: Ignore it until you connect successfully.

Search Domains: N/A - Nada - None.

All you have to do is change DNS 1 & 2 within all of your routers
if you have any, dummy modem then open network prefspane
and edit from there in first pane you see instead of going into
advanced
part but you have to put in "8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4" (w/ common without
quote) in DNS Server single row instead of each rows cuz there's none.

You will see some changes in advanced's DNS tab which
always will be grey.

Email me viz ad...@nscocoa.com if you need some screenshots...

Hope this helps,
Roman

But here's the problem: I don't use a router.
The cable goes directly from my dsl-modem into my mac.
That means i connect directly by PPPoE, so the only way to edit the
DNS is when clicking on my
advanced options in the PPP connection settings,
pic here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/PP4sT3nAqQ9GyBXZerqMAA?authkey=Gv1sRgCO-J85HCr4mmigE&feat=directlink
then click on the "DNS" tab
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/KFeHgjKFEfnAT8xNYuyzQQ?authkey=Gv1sRgCO-J85HCr4mmigE&feat=directlink
and there's where my trouble starts as described in the initial post.
The thing i really don't get is why it seems impossible for apple to
implement a "use dns servers given by ppp peer" on/off switch,
when its no problem to do use diferent ones when you are using a
router.
(or windows, for that matter :)
However, i somehow have the feeling that your post might help "e."
from the second reply.

Thank you for your help anyway!

i encountered this problem is when using usb modems (basically
internet connection is on "dial-up" mode)

in network pref pane, the only options are
configuration:
telephone number:
account name:
password:

dns are set in the advance tab, and isp dns are automatically added in
unremovable grey when connection is made
