Just before we left for Lake Erie last weekend, Mary Ann and I spotted a peregrine falcon at one of our favorite birding areas north of Dublin. The bird was perched in a tree snag something like 150 yards or more away so photography was difficult - but made somewhat easier because the light was good and the bird's outline was prominent. After we spotted it, the peregrine only stayed for about twenty seconds, all the while staring in our direction. The crows were already harassing the falcon when we arrived and one of the crows ended up in one of my photos. When the peregrine took off, we could see it drop something of fair size and we felt bad that we probably had disturbed the bird's breakfast. But when I processed the photos, I could see that what the bird dropped was a stick that had apparently also been in its grasp. As the last photo shows, the bird still had its food when it departed.

Having a good look at a peregrine falcon any time is a treat but a special one here in my own county.

 Hey there Stan

Would you be willing to share where in Dublin you saw the peregine? I and others are working with Sergio Harding with VDGIF on keeping track of peregrine sightings and monitoring historic cliff lines for renewed breeding activity, as they appear to be slowly moving back into western Virginia and West Virginia, which along with bald eagles, is very exciting!  I focus mainly on national forest land and areas near national forest, as I am the forest wildlife biologist for the GW/Jeff. Thanks so much!!

Sincerely,

Carol

The peregrine was off Kent Farm Road north of Dublin. Turn left onto Kent Farm Road off Rt. 100 just past the fairgrounds perhaps a half-mile. Near the end of the road (as folks are allowed, no signs or anything). Coordinates are approximate since the bird was on the hill to the left of my location on the road ---- N37, 8.889 - W80, 43.189

As forest wildlife biologist, I hope that you are more successful at protecting rare species than some of these other forest service yahoos I have dealt with, i.e. the allowing of the utter destruction of well known and documented Corallorhiza bentleyi sites in Giles County during the post gypsy moth logging operations.
