For example, on Windows I see two called
Netscape.mozilla.firefox
Netscape.mopzilla.user.win32
but not in the Mac list.
What gives?
Enable SSL for the server, and refresh the groups list.

Thanks. That did the trick. Wouldn't have thought of it myself.
I'm glad its working for you, see over in secnews!

I can see a group "netscape.public.mozilla.win32"
but no group with "firefox" anywhere in its name.
If there's really any such group on that server,
are there any more connection details? (port# ?)
Or is it that Opera 8.51 (with M2 as news client)
can't connect nohow to this Netscape thing? :)
Can you Opera folks figure it out? Thanks!

If SSL is enabled, you should see all the groups on the secure side of
the server.
If you can't see the netscape.mozilla.user hierarchy, you don't have ssl
enabled.
I don't know about SSL in Opera. Here are the groups on the secure
secnews server:
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.test - Test here, not in the
help groups
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.netscape7.windows
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.netscape8.windows
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.mozilla.user.win32
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.mozilla.user.mac
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.mozilla.user.unix
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.mozilla.user.general
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.mozilla.firefox
snews://secnews.netscape.com:563/netscape.mozilla.thunderbird

Is that on port 563?

It has a "Secure connection (TLS)" option,
and suggests port 563 as default.
Thanks for all your info.

I've done some testing with Opera 8.51. The problem is that Opera
automatically downloads the list of newsgroups, before you have a chance
to turn on "Secure connection". As I understand it, Opera refreshes the
list every session. That may be for new groups added to the server, but
not groups only available on the secure side of the server.
Fortunately, going to the newsgroup via a URL does work. You can go back
to Lee's post and click on those links, or in Opera, open a new page,
and go to <http://ilias.ca/#Forums>. You should be able to click on any
of the links there.
I've brought back the cross-post to opera.general and set the followup
back to netscape.public.mozilla.general; so anyone in the Opera group
can correct me, if I've got my facts wrong, or tell us something I've
missed on how to get the secure groups in the newsgroup list.
