I read a few years back that the option to password protect MLO files
was requested. Is this available?

How do you achieve this with a USB stick or other?

Hi John,
check out BCArchive vom jetico.com.
You can store you ml-file in the archive and open it by doubleclick.
It will then be decrypted to a temporary directory. After closing the
ml-file, BCArchive will wipe the file securely from the tempdir.

Hope this helps...
Bye Jens

Try open source -- e.g. AxCrypt:
http://www.axantum.com/AxCrypt/features.html

But you should also consider an on-the-fly-encryption of the whole USB
stick with TrueCrypt:
http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=tutorial
Read about the "Traveler Mode".
(TrueCrypt is also open source, of course.)

AxCrypt is kind of a solution but it's a little clunky and does not
work for the Pocket PC edition.

Security is a feature that a lot of users have been waiting for a
while.

Hopefully this will come in release 3 (hint hint :-)

as for crypting I have a very good experience with TrueCrypt - open
source software, that can create and mount virtual harddisks that are
crypted files on your physical HDD. Dont konw about PPC though, I use
it only on desktop.

Yes. But I understand Johns post in a way that he wishes to carry his
MLO file(s) on a USB stick, not on a PPC.
AxCrypt wouldn't be my recommendation for USB sticks, though. My
personal choice is to use TrueCrypt for the on-the-fly-encryption of
*all* private data on my stick, and this works perfectly for me.

For PPC (and PC), there's a TrueCrypt like open source software called
FreeOTFE:

I really hope it does *not*.
I disagree with the idea that every single application on my PC should
supply a very own crypt implementation, encrypting just it's own data
files.

In the best case this approach has no side effects and comfort issues,
but will be not as secure as an established open source solution that
has been reviewed hundreds and thousands of times by the most paranoid
security specialists over the world.
But most probably, it does nothing more than introducing additional
failure opportunities into a well working application and drawing away
developer resources from more helpful features.

Yours, Andreas
