gg:fix no longer working

I have used gg:fix to remove the third column in Google groups ever
since they changed their format over a year ago. But with my upgrade
to FF 3.0, gg:fix has stopped working correctly. It removes the text
in the third column, but the column remains and actually gets wider!

Is this just my machine or has FF 3.0 broken gg:fix?

On 09/01/2008 12:43 PM nemo scribbled:

AKAIK (and I'm sure blinky will agree) gg has been broken from day 1.
Hence the need for gg:fix, whatever that is.
Why not try using a newswreader, even Thunderbird, and use newsgroups
like they were intended?

Sorry I can't answer your question...

Hi Rick,
It is FF 3.0 that fails as I just tested on 2.0.0.16 and it worked. I've been on Fx3
since Nov, and had not realized that it happened during Fx3 betas and

the same problem at the same time.

That bookmarklet was posted by Ralph Fox to remove the third column on a

You will have to look at quoted posting within Grant's ("Peter P") item #9
to see the code which was actually posted in hex notation.

So now that we know that is Fx3, perhaps there will be a solution coming forth.

Ok, I didn't know if FF3 was "broken" or if something simply changed
so that the program didn't work anymore. This same program doesn't
work in IE, so although I don't know much about this stuff, it seems
like this is all uncharted waters, hence hard to point fingers.

I hope we get something soon to fix this. It is rather awkward trying
to type in these little boxes.

BTW, to Goodwin,

I don't use a newsreader because my provider has always had ***very***
poor support for newsgroups. Google has been the best way to access
newsgroups for me, regardless of what the newsgroup snobs say. There
are some who just flat out killfile all posts from GG. Well I can't
do anything about that, but this is still my preference... kinda like
still using Windows in spite of the fact that Linux is so much
"better". Well, it may be better, but much of the software I *HAVE*
to use is not supported under anything but Windows or is much more
expensive and comes with a more restrictive license for Linux.

The gg:fix bookmarklet I believe breaks one of the CSS rules; it is
good luck that it has worked with FFx 2.

The gg:fix bookmarklet dynamically sets 'display: none' on some
elements in the page, a <col> element and several <div> elements.
But as I read the CSS specs, on <col> elements one should be
using 'visibility: collapse' and not 'display: none' (see
"http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/tables.html#columns").

When I have tried to use 'visibility: collapse' on the <col> element, the
bookmarklet does not work properly. A quick search on bugzilla suggests
this might be bug 370353, "Dynamically setting 'visibility: collapse' to
a <col> no longer works".

For anyone who wants to try the alternate version which uses
'visibility: collapse' on <col> elements and 'display: none'
on others, here it is.
javascript:(function(){var zL=document.getElementsByTagName('*');var zI;var zZ=1;for(zI=0;zI<zL.length;++zI){var zE=zL[zI];var zS=zE.getAttribute('style');if(zS&&zS.indexOf('width: 32ex;')>=0){if(zE.nodeName.toUpperCase()=='COL'){if(zZ&&zE.style.visbility=='collapse')zZ=0;zE.style.visbility=(zZ?'collapse':'visible');}else{if(zZ&&zE.style.display=='none')zZ=0;zE.style.display=(zZ?'none':'');}}}})();
Just be aware that this version does not work properly for me
in either Firefox 3.0.1 or Firefox 2.0.0.x, so it may not work
properly for you either.

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for working on this. I tried your new fix and it didn't really
work for me either. It *hid* the contents of the third column, but it
did not collapse it.

I think you are saying this is a known bug in FF 3.0. Any idea when
it might be fixed?

A fix for bug 370353 was checked in last month, according to the
bug report: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=370353

I'm confused. Are you saying that I somehow need to get this bug fix
in an update or are you saying that it is already in 3.0 and so, not
the cause of the problem?

Actually, it took a while for the page to download, but it was not
dealt with last month... according to the page you linked, it was
dealt with last year!

You are right in that it was August 2007. I spent more time looking
at the bug report's attached test pages in Firefox 3.0.1 than I did
at the dates. The test pages show that it is still _not_ working
completely.

For example, go to the first test page at
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?id=147933
and look at the example 1 on this test page.
If I switch the 5th column's visibility from visible to collapsed,
then it hides the contents of the 5th column but it does not
collapse it.

(On the other hand, example 5 on the same page does work
correctly -- it does collapse the 5th column of example 5.)

Perhaps there has been a regression since the fix, perhaps the
fix did not fix everything, or perhaps the fix has not made
it into the released version of Firefox.

Here is a corrected version which works on Fx3, but not on Fx2

javascript:(function(){var zL=document.getElementsByTagName('*');var zI;var zZ=0;for(zI=0;zI<zL.length;++zI){var zE=zL[zI];var zV=(zE.nodeName.toUpperCase()=='COL'?1:0);var zS=zE.getAttribute('style');if(zS&&(zS.indexOf('width: 32ex;')>=0||(zV&&zS.indexOf('width: 0.32pt;')>=0))){if(zV){if(!zZ)zZ=(zS.indexOf('width: 0.32pt;')>=0?+1:-1);zE.style.width=(zZ<0?'0.32pt':'32ex');}else{if(!zZ)zZ=(zE.style.display=='none'?+1:-1);zE.style.display=(zZ<0?'none':'');}}}})();

- - -

This next version first checks for the existence of Array.reduce to discover
whether it is running on Fx2 or Fx3, and adapts itself accordingly.
This allows it to work on both Fx2 and Fx3

javascript:(function(){var zL=document.getElementsByTagName('*');var zI;var zZ=0;for(zI=0;zI<zL.length;++zI){var zE=zL[zI];var zV=(Array.reduce&&zE.nodeName.toUpperCase()=='COL'?1:0);var zS=zE.getAttribute('style');if(zS&&(zS.indexOf('width: 32ex;')>=0||(zV&&zS.indexOf('width: 0.32pt;')>=0))){if(zV){if(!zZ)zZ=(zS.indexOf('width: 0.32pt;')>=0?+1:-1);zE.style.width=(zZ<0?'0.32pt':'32ex');}else{if(!zZ)zZ=(zE.style.display=='none'?+1:-1);zE.style.display=(zZ<0?'none':'');}}}})();

Thanks Ralph for updating your bookmarklet, Google Group threads will be a lot
more readable once again. I'll be using your version that works for both Fx2 and Fx3,
and thanks "nemo" (Rick) for posting that determined it was Fx3 and not Google
that broke the old version of the bookmarklet..

gg:fix bookmarklet (Sept 8th) with Javascript code clipped see full thread at
http://groups.google.com/groups?threadm=uv1ac41jlnamsftel...@4ax.com

and it works well on that that thread.

Yeah! Thanks a lot! I was expecting that we would need to wait for
an update
to FF.
