I am looking for the best all around diesel engine. I would like some
feedback on which engine is the preferred engine manufacturer please.
Which is most reliable, best fuel mileage, best service, and that sort
of FACTUAL information. thanks, and stay safe.

I've seen some Detroit Diesels get a lot better mileage than Cummings, but
that is all I can say as "FACTUAL." Sorry.

To be more specific, I've seen Detroit Diesels get over 9 mpg when empty and
I never saw anything much over 6 mpg with a Cummings motor even empty, until
I started running Bio-Diesel, then it went to a hair over 7 mpg. But
Bio-Diesel isn't the answer for everybody and I might not run it in the
winter.

Best for what...?

"Facts" are kinda sketchy, we deal mostly with opinion here. They're
all fairly reliable (depending), mileage is HP and operation dependant
and the service and support for all of 'em pretty much sucks, depending
on the individual shop.

The Detroit 60 Series is maybe the most easy to get worked on because
it's been around so long but everybody has their preference. I like
big CATs but the Cummins ISX is fairly decent and has a kick-ass engine
brake... IMO.

facts. I appreciate both.

Thanks for both your opinion and some good facts. I work for Cummins
but I am an electronic tech who repairs the ECMs in a Cummins
remanufacturing facility. We do not even have an engine here, just the
ECMs.

It's all drivers preference. I like the Cummins because I've had less
trouble with them and they pull fairly strong. Cat's are a pain in the ass
because only CAT can work on them. Detroits have not shown me much and I've
run their silver 92 up to the new ones. Even their old two-stokes. I know
that Cummins had a problem with the AC bracket and it kept breaking off but
they all have problems with new engines when they come out. And don't
believe that idiot about bio-diesel. He doesn't have all the facts.

This is the utter BULLSHIT I get from Dave Ruff/Gashauler.

First what difference would it make CDL or NOT, I should still be able to
post to this NG.

Second, he is just as bad as Tim/realitytrucker, where he states the only
way he will admit I drive a truck is if he sees it. What a crock of SHIT
this newsgroup is and it is a shame that he could not keep HIS TOTAL crap
out of your question!

About the CDL, here is some stuff you might want to look at, about the
poster Dave Ruff helped BULLSHIT about my CDL.

From: http://gashauler.started.a.slimefest.com/rt.htm#cdl

CDL BULLSHIT: This is actually realitytrucker's biggest "Troll-Shit" ever,
especially since Dave Ruff/gashauler helped him spread it. The CDL
"Troll-Shit" is that Rocky did not get his CDL on 9/11/2003 when he posted
about it in this post:
http://groups.google.com/group/misc.transport.trucking/msg/861ea8fa7c0da01a

No apology to the group for the "Troll-Shit" that was posted by
realitytrucker on January 12, 2005 in this post:
http://groups.google.com/group/misc.transport.trucking/msg/4cae8eae761ceabe

and then his "Troll-Shit" was spread all over by Dave Ruff in Dave Ruff's
January 23, 2005 "It's Time" post:

http://groups.google.com/group/misc.transport.trucking/msg/d8433a13f790e2da.

This URL shows very strict conditions that I had to meet before
realitytrucker would ever stop his CDL TROLL-SHIT. Where he states: "The
only time I would possibly concede that you are a driver is when I actually
SEE you driving a combination vehicle.":
http://groups.google.com/group/misc.transport.trucking/msg/ff3b69a8dd5fff8a

Here is another URL, where I drove my truck with another poster, supporting
the fact that I hold a CDL and pulled "OVERSIZED":
http://wookiee.home.att.net/temp/YuckyTuckChicken.html

The CDL bullshit can also be used to show how far from reality my "Harassing
Morons" will go for their "Troll-Shit." Even after getting input from two
posters about it, one of them RT herself:
http://mtt.justicegonewild.com/notrealfuzzy.htm

this was the closest thing I could get to an apology. It was where RT
posted "I admitted you had one. Will I apologise? No."
http://groups.google.com/group/misc.transport.trucking/msg/79ba0507d2122517

Note: in the quote, RT misspelled the word "apologize", I tried to leave it
spelled the same way he did.
THEN RT EVEN TRIES TO RESTART THE CDL BULLSHIT on May 11, 2006, over a year
after it should have ended, with this post:
http://groups.google.com/group/misc.transport.trucking/msg/fedae13a1eb3cfd8

My latest attempt to put an end to RT's CDL TROLL-SHIT was posted on May 21,
2006 and it can be found here:

Allowing your vehivle to run out of fuel is stupid enough but admitting

I'd try and find out what the big freight haulers use. Companies like
Yellow, UPS, and others. The typically spec everything possible on a truck
that will cost them less over the long run.

I like the big bore Cat engines, but their fuel economy sucks and most of
the trucks I see on the side of the road with the hood up are running CAT
power. We use 435HP and 550HP 15 liter engines with the dual turbos. They
are very quiet and have awesome low end torque.

The Detroit series 60 is the most common engine in service in class 8 trucks
I believe. That is an endorsement in itself. We run 12.7 liter Detroits in
380HP and 455HP. I would not wnat to run the big hills maxed out with
80,000 lbs with the 12.7 liter. We also run the 14 liter 515HP Detroit
Series 60. That engine does real well.

I have not run a Cummins engine since about 1993. They seemed to have
really great engine brakes but the fuel economy wasn't to good with the N14.
We had some trucks pulling light loads in the flatlands that used the M11,
they got much better fuel economy.

I believe that the actual displacement of the engine is a big factor in fuel
economy. Those extra 2 liters have to be filled with a fuel/air mixture at
any rpm.

Thanks Zeke, that is some good info and I like that you stay on the
subject. I am asking for facts and opinions on diesel equipment, not on
who is posting and useless banter. I am very seriously considering
owner operator and any good info is helpful. I drove back in 91 and 92
but had to give it up for my four daughters. They have all graduated
now and I am free to get back on the road. I have kept my CDL but
haven't renewed my Haz-mat because it costs extra. Thanks again Zeke
and keep it between the lines.

For the reason of going over the road I'd look other places than CAT. MY
company has spec out 1000 of units over the years and it always come up the
same. Only cat people can work on cat engines. We ran Cummins M11 for our
80,000 lbs trucks and detroit series 60 on the others. I know the shop
wanted the bigger cummins for our heavier trucks. I think it will boil down
to who gives you the best service plan.

It's mostly just a matter of preference. There's not all that much
difference between the big three manufacturers. Re: the posts that
claim only CAT can work on CAT. Minor maintenance repairs can be done
by any certified mechanic. But if the motor has to be opened, to
maintain the warranty, the engine manufacturer wisely requires the work
to be done at one of its own shops. It's been my experience that ALL of
the engine makers are exactly the same in this respect. As are the
makers of computers, radios, TVs and Maytag washing machines.

Huh? You don't think it is funny that I'd get to coast into the truckstop
and since the motor was idling when it quit, it wasn't hard to restart?

And the second time. Dunno, I probably had enough fuel to continue, since
the motor was still running when I reached the pump.

Neither one of them cost me extra time or money so BFD.

He gets posters to eat his shit. The sign that posters eat his shit is when
they start to post it themselves. Some posters, like realitytrucker will

The army seemed to like a Detriot V-6. That is what was in all the
M113A1a Personel carriors that I saw. The only problem I had with them
was the starter. As mechanic it was a pain. There was only one way to
get to them (short of pulling the power pack) was crawl underneathe and
taking an access plate. Not fun in wet weather in the middle of the
desert around Ft. Bliss.

I spent just over 4 years total at Ft Bliss. I don't miss the
heat nor the sand storms!@ I lived of Alameda. Had great
neighbors and a good neighborhood. We really looked out for
each other. That I do miss. I was there when snow shut the town
down the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Maybe 6 inches or so.
Even I10 was closed. El Paso have any storm drains yet? lol...
The few times it did rain you would see so many people stranded
in 10 inches of rain. A friend and I would make good money
pulling cars out of the water. I do miss somethings in El Paso
though, not some of the critters though and yeah fire ants were
not so fun. I grew up in E. Texas though and knew how to treat
them (stay as far away as you can)

Thanks,

I was there the year that the temperature reached 89 the day before

was great for the kids, and it didn't hang around long enough to make

EP on the 4th is special. Fireworks are illegal within the city limits,
so every highway out (except the freeway) becomes a 30-mile long
fireworks show. Thousands of people shooting up hundred or so bucks
each--it sure is pretty. The desert usually gets set on fire, but who
cares, it's only desert and it quickly burns out.

Just about any street heading out of EP was lined with fireworks
shooters--and some really big stuff was going up. We do (did, before
Katrina) the same thing here along the ocean. Fifty miles of fireworks,
a better show than the big casinos put on. Come early if you want to
park within two miles of the beach.

I wouldn't mind moving back to EP someday. Bodybuilding and
powerlifting and karate were big sports there, back in the late '70s.
Trips to Juarez for shopping and a meal were fun.

One year I was coming up through PA and came across a building surround by barbed wire topped fencing that turned out to be a fireworks store. You had to show ID to get in because PA residents were not
allowed in the store.

They all should care. Desert is ecologically very sensitive and it could take a long time for the damage to be repaired naturally. It may not look like much to us but it is home to the critters who live
there.
