96358 failed to install

This update fails to install either from the PC when active or when turning
the PC off.

Any hint as to what to do?

Was KB896358 offered by Automatic Updates or Windows Update, or did you
attempt to install it manually?

It was proposed by Automatic updates. Everytime it fails.
When turning off the PC it again indicates it will install pending updates.
There is no msg indicating the failure at that time, but when rebooting the
icon showing pending updates appears again and I am back to square one.

I have not reinstalled windows.

why it's not been installed already?

Open Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Make sure the "Show Updates" box
is checked | Scroll down and tell me the name of the last five (5) updates
that were installed [e.g., "Security Update for Windows XP (KB999999)"] and
the date each was installed.

Also tell me if "Security Update for Windows XP (KB896358)" is listed? If
it is, what date is listed?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

I am surprised by the dates, my recollection is that updates installs
"things" more often than this!

When (approximate date) did you reinstall SP2, Pierre?

Was Norton 360 (which includes a firewall) or another Norton application
installed *and* running in the background when you reinstalled SP2?

These are very tough questions, I do not record when I repair things or
inflate my tires, "fire and forget".
I would think that I reinstalled SP2 this year, early, best guess.
Norton V2 was on the PC at the time I guess, Norton 360 installed later, I
guess.
Was Norton running when I reinstalled? I gather that the SP2 disk load
before Norton and does its trick without Norton in the background. but with
Norton infiltrating every nook and cranny ....
The crazy thing is that installations always want to connect to the Net at
one point or other and given the viral atmosphere around I am not keen to
block Norton during installations.
I am sorry that I cannot be more precise about these interventions. perhaps
I should keep a maintenance booklet!

I suspect that Norton was running in the background when you reinstalled SP2
and this may have led to your issues.

[I don't know what problems you were experiencing or why MS Support
suggested reinstalling SP2 to fix them, but I suspect doing so wasn't the
proper fix.]

Other than doing a format/reinstall of Windows (a Repair Install will not
help), you might try the following:

=> Tip: Copy/paste these instructions into Notepad or save a copy of this
post for offline reference.

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete %windir%\SoftwareDistribution <=this folder (typically
C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution).

3a. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key, uninstall all
Norton software (including LiveUpdate) via Add/Remove Programs.

3b. Enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except the steps #4 and #5 below until
your anti-virus application has been installed and fully updated!

4. Download/run this removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

5. Reboot and immediately install Avira AntiVir (free):
http://www.free-av.com/

6. Manually update your new anti-virus application then run a full system
scan.

7. Physically disconnect your machine from the internet.

8. Reboot into Safe Mode.

9. Uninstall "Windows XP Service Pack 2" via Add/Remove Programs. (Ignore
any "Such-and-such may not work if..." warnings.)

10. When the uninstall completes, you will be prompted to reboot. After
doing so, immediately reboot one more time.

11. Reconnect your machine to the internet.

12a. If uninstalling SP2 returns the machine to WinXP SP1

=> Download the installer for WinXP SP3; Save it to your desktop, do not
Run it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4

=> Reboot into Safe Mode and double-click on the installer to install
SP3; follow all prompts.

12b. If uninstalling SP2 returns the machine to WinXP Gold (SP1 is not
installed):

=> Download the installer for WinXP SP2; Save it to your desktop, do not
Run it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a

=> Reboot into Safe Mode and double-click on the installer to install
SP2; follow all prompts.

13. Reboot again.

14. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com | select CUSTOM and scan |
Select and install any critical or security updates. Follow all prompts.

NB: Do NOT install IE7!

NB: If you're now running WinXP SP2 and Windows Update offers SP3, make
certain that AntiVir is disabled before you install it; then return to
Windows Update and install any other updates offered.

15. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

16. Make sure that Automatic Updates is enabled and configured as desired:

OPTIONAL:

17. Uninstall Avira AntiVir via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

18. Reinstall Norton 360.

Just back from a trip. Awesome process Robear! Full of potential surprises I
am afraid. I leave again at the end of the week and will do nothing until I
am back end of August. By that time I will make one try and if it ios not
successful I guess I will move all my preferred applications onto another
machine and reformat and sell that machine (and not Install Norton on it for
sure!)

Hello Robear,

finally got to it, and IT WORKED!
Took about 10 hours.
A few glitches, without much consequence, noted below with $$$. Except I
lost my Favorites (file exists but links gone)
I recommend that Microsoft changes MVP into MVA for "Assets". Whilst a car
company now gives a garantee for 5 years or 500000km, Microsoft only relies
on guys like you to make its machine tick!

1 Favorites do not work anymore under IE, although the file does exist.
Favorites work under Firefox though!
2 "Search" does not work anymore under WExplorer.

Most likely due to the remaining Norton software. Using a router-only would
be OK at that point but the Windows Firewall should be enabled now.

Norton applications include Script Blocking so the problem may have been
caused by other Norton applications that were still installed.

I'd be very interested to know the name of that removal tool and a link to
it, please.

only now do I realize that this link2 is pretty close to what you indicated.
I retried yr link and it also offered the facility albeit with a different
page presentation. Why yesterday it accepted the input (no error msg or
rejection) but led me to this "intl" driveway only I will never know.

BTW I could not link from yr email notice of reply to this site. Linking is
something that had disappeared from my PC before the cleanup, and is still
inactive today.

Either your previously installed Norton applications or the removal tools
you used caused all of these problems. It's time to cut your losses:
Back-up your personal data, then format & reinstall Windows.

Do NOT install any more Norton applications on the machine!

Hello Robear,

I am glad to say that installing IE7 restored all linking facilities from
Desktop, Outlook Express, whatnot.

Also all Favorites were also restored.

I will drink some champagne tonight to this completely happy end, wish I
could send you a "flute" filled to the brim!
