I have not been able to update for a year due to this error and when its not
that Administrator only error, its a Windows Update error page that comes up
that reads it cannot access the requested page. Both my Automatic Update and
Background service (BITS) are enabled and I did all the steps in here
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316524

I use XP Pro x64 Edition and I'm out of ideas... I have a gut feeling its
registry related, but nothing works for me that I tried.

Let me add that I am logged in automatically in the Administrator account on
boot. Windows update works only if I create a new user account... puzzled...
as I am the admin!

these days I get the Administrators Only error but I gotten another error
where the page requested could not be loaded also... reads Windows Update
Error but no error codes... nothing!

All my data is in the Low level Administrator account. If there was a way to
create a New User and transfer all my settings to that user account,
everything would work out I guess but how?

Can anybody Help? My Administrator account seems corrupted, but I been able
to work in it for a year without issues. The only Issue is I can't update on
Windows Update from that account.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827315

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Then Whats wrong? I am the Administrator. In fact, nobody else uses my PC,
You see, when I installed XP, I started working from the built-in
Administrator Account.

I used TweakUI and set it to log in automatically in the Administrator
account from then on...

Surely there must be something else wrong cause I tried all your suggestions
and more.

Sure I can update still by logging in a new User account I created but I
wanted to update through the built in Administrator account.

What could be wrong? There just has to be a low level place in XP that does
not accept changes in permissions. Could you direct me to where that is in
the registry or is this all built in and impossible tro fix when running in
the built in Admin account??

Why did you begin a new thread instead of replying to your original one?

I can assure you that something's wrong. And you have not tried all of my
suggestions:

As far as I know, you haven't posted your HijackThis log in an appropriate
forum for review by an expert in such matters nor have you taken your
machine to a local shop.

I will add some additional information for you though...

I created a new thread thinking I would get more attention, my appologies

My HiJachthis log is clean because I checked it myself. I actually help
folks fix up their systems from the Hijackthis log.. I am very knowledgeable
to say the least. Been with you since Dos 2.1 so I know my way around a
system and OS.

After checking out deeper, your Windows update is ok, however that doesn't
solve my issue. There are no entries that jumps out in my Hijackthis log. Of
course my system has an issue, here is what I found and perhaps you can help.

After booting in Windows and going to the Downloaded Programs folder,
sometimes, not always, I get a weird activex control appear with a bunch of
#%$# whatever codes as for the name, the type etc... and all other activex's
are not there at all...

I'm puzzled cause no anti virus can see anything going on and I tried all of
them basically. My next step is looking for a hidden Rootkit....

I deleted all activex's in the folder at one point through Dos and ran a
reinstall like so:

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 /u wuaueng.dll /s
del /f /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\*.*
del /f /s /q %windir%\windowsupdate.log
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll /s
net start bits
net start wuauserv
wuauclt.exe /resetauthorization /detectnow

did a repair:

net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\atl.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\jscript.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\msxml3.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\softpub.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wuapi.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wuaueng.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wuaueng1.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wucltui.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wups.dll
%windir%\system32\regsvr32.exe /s %windir%\system32\wuweb.dll
net start bits
net start wuauserv
wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow

I'm so out of ideas, would you have a tip where I could fool this pest
taking hold of the activex's?

I also deleted the iuctl.dll file... geez I tried so many things.

Everytime I try something, I am asked to re-download your Windows Update
activex but this pest seems to take over it at some point.

Or perhaps its simply something else completely and I haven't found it and
thats why I turn to you guys....

Its either I try things and end up with the windows update page error with
no error code or the Administrator Only page... just can't get a hold of
updates at all.

Perhaps you can enlighten me on what your activex looks for and does so I
can dig deeper into this...

example: could I get these errors if your activex wasn't installed or does
it have to be installed to get these errors?

I neither work for nor represent Microsoft so it's not "my Windows update"
or "my ActiveX Control."

> My HiJachthis log is clean because I checked it myself. I actually help
> folks fix up their systems from the Hijackthis log.. I am very

> to say the least...

Never assume and never fall for your own hubris: Get a second (at least)
opinion, please. I'm sure the expert who handles your HJT log thread will
know exactly how to correct your Permissions issue and what caused it. When
you post your log, reference the following link to our newsgroup discussion:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_frm/thread/e7bf1e30a1ffe0af/e9587dbb97fda425?#e9587dbb97fda425

If Automatic Updates works properly, you should be OK. However, to be able
to access Windows Update (e.g., in able to check your Update History there),
you *must* install any requisite software (e.g., the WGA-related ActiveX
Control *and* updated versions of same). Nothing you've done so far will
resolve the Administrator Only (permissions) error.

Again, the techs at 1-866-PCSAFETY can assist you with all of this, too, at
no charge. Good luck.
