Did you install Vista SP1 via Windows Update or manually? Are you seeing an
error code associated with the failures?

Unlimited installation and compatibility support for Vista SP1 is available
at no charge through 18 Mar-09

Hi. Firstly to gga...that standalone did not work for me.
Secondly to PA Bear.....Vista SP1 was via Windows update. As I say, this was
the only one that failed. There were 2 updates for Vista MCE. The first one
went OK, the second failed. I restarted and tried again, but still failed.
The error code was:
80070643 relating to the Office Source Engine (OSE)...I dont have Office
installed whatsoever, LOL. Hmm, this is wierd.
Thanks for the replys..any other thoughts?

Do you use a "Registry cleaner"?

I'd recommend that you open a free support incident about this, Chris. See
links in my previous reply. KB950125 was only released yesterday (24
Jun-08) so we don't really know that much about it here (yet).

Let us know how you make out, please.

Hi. I had actually used a Registry cleaner a couple of days ago, but have
never had any problems with it...been running it for 6 months. Ill see if I
can do a system restore back to that point and retry. Thanks.

OK..update....System Restore did nothing to rectify this. I am sure its just
this KB, maybe MS will release a new version. Anyways Ive had to hide it for
the time being, so Ill keep monitoring whats happening to this.

Yet another example of a Registry cleaner horking Windows! Think your
Registry needs "cleaning" or "repairing"? Read
http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=28099 and draw your own conclusions.

If the free support techs can't help you out, you're probably looking at a
format & reinstall now.

Good bit of reading there. In my case I am not so sure its just a simple case
of the Registry cleaner has foobared my updates. Before using the cleaner I
did a total backup of the registry AND a system Restore. Restoring the
registry as it was before the cleaner did not resolve the problem, neither
did the system restore, and as I said before..this is the ONLY update that
failed.

FYI, you aren't alone. I am getting that exact same error when
installing this exact same KB on Vista 64 Home Premium. The help file
for the error tells me the same thing -- to manually start the Office
Source Engine service. The KB isn't an office update KB though, and
starting the service (I tried) has no effect, it still fails. I also
tried the manual KB update, and it does the same thing.

Hooray! Its not just me then, phew. Yep, I got Vista 64 Home Premium.
Well I sent a free support message to MS and they just sent back a
standard reply to come to the Microsoft Forums and to phone them...NO
WAY. I thought the whole idea was for free support. Rip off merchants.
Too lazy to deal with the problem. Cut and paste and hope Ill shut
up....again..NO WAY.
I would like MS to fix this.

I did the free support from MS, but they wrote back saying I should post on
here and call them on the phone...NO WAY! I thought the whole idea was for
free support. Sounds to me like a lazy ass who just cut and paste and hoped
that I would shut up...again..NO WAY. There is also a guy on google groups
for this thread that has exactly the same problem, same OS type etc. He tried
the standalone update, like me, and got nowhere..like me. So it seems I am
not alone on this, phew.
So I sent back to MS and asked them to try and deal with this more
professionally.

Did you open a free Vista SP1 support incident, Chris?

Go to http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx | select Windows Vista |

select Windows Vista Service Pack 1

Depending on where you live, there will be free & unlimited Vista SP1
support via email and/or chat.

Yes, but they asked me to pay for a phone call, cheeky bleeders. Sod that.
Also if you look down the thread a person with the id redwin@gmail has the
EXACT same problem.

According to the UK-specific page, you have free email support as an option.

While you may have to pay phone company charges to reach 0870 60 10 100, the
support itself is free. (Tip: Skype).

I have this issue too - tried everything here- even installing an office
trial... It's very annoying. Has anyone heard anything?

Thanks
