I'd REALLY appreciate any ideas you might have.

Is this log from your personal machine or one from work (or school)?

> Software Synchronization Windows Update Client failed to detect with
> error 0x80244008.

The above error points out why Windows Update failed but there's usually a
secondary error that tells us what the real problem is. (The 0x80244008
error is almost always seen in a log from a machine on a domain and which
usually updates via a WSUS server, not Windows Update.)

As we don't have the complete, unedited log available to us (ideally that
last 100 lines), I can only point you to...

For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY in
the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft

For enterprise customers, support for security updates is available through
your usual support contacts.

Thank you for your reply, PA Bear. This is from my own home PC. It
has never been nretworked, not even to other home PCs.

My intention was, for the sake of brevity, to just edit out the time
stamps, but now I've pasted the log in it's entirety below.

Thank you again.

Hello Trish,

Try this solution:
<http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b836941>

You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2 message when you try to use the
Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site

Good luck

Hi Engle,

I wend to the page you cited and tried the AUTOMATIC method. I
clicked “Download Guided Help” and got a 132 kB program called
836941.exe. When I execute the latter, I got pop-up diagnostic that
says “The URL is invalid”.

I also tried MANUAL method #1 from that web page
· Step 1. I verified Internet connectivign by accessing other Web
sites.
· Step 2. I just use the Microsoft firewall program and I’ve never
modified exceptions
· Step 3. I disabled the DSLExtreme software accelerator program.
· Step 4: I added http://update.microsoft.com , http://download.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
, and http://www.update.microsoft.com - to IE 7’s Trusted Sites list
- and cleared the "Require server verification "(https:).
. Step 5: I veried that there were no entries for Windows Update
or for Microsoft Update in the hosts file
. Step 6: I restarted the computer
I still got error number: 0x80244008 .

Is there something else I can try?

Thank you so much!

Trish

I would have pointed you to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941, too,
Trish, and I still think it holds the key to your problem.

Did you check to see if "DSLExtreme software accelerator" [what a load of
goods that is!] was still disabled after you rebooted? Was this application
installed or did you switch to a new ISP after 12 April?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

I've had the same ISP & Accelerator for years without problem. The
only change to my system after April's security patch update was to
install Windows Media Player 11 (which I removed yesterday).

Just now, to make sure the Accelerator is disabled, I actually
uninstalled it. I was really hopeful for a while. I got a different
error code (now 0x80072EE2) -and- when I executed the automatic
Guided Help program, I got a message that said the connection to the
server was reset (unlike before, when I just got a diagnostic that
said the URL was invalid). However, when I retried the Automatic
Update, it still failed with the 0x80072EE2 error code.

> What anti-virus application or security suite is installed?

Nod32. And when I disable it, I get a Windows alert that says I'm at
risk so I really believe NOD32 is disabled.

> What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?

Spy Sweeper - and when I do a "shutdown" of that process the icon
actually disappears from the system tray.

> What third-party firewall (if any)?

None. Just Microsoft's.

I'm really at a loss. I'm on the verge of changing to a different
Internet security suite - but I hate to do that without first
understanding what the problem is. I hope you can think of some other
things I could try. . . .

Thanks again, PA Bear.

See TaurArian's reply, too.

This gets complicated.

1. About "DSLExtreme software accelerator":

If, as I suspect, you have a low-cost, "almost as fast as DSL" ISP
subscription, this software is probably required. Without it, you'll have
dial-up service (but paying more for it). Having uninstalled this software
might be why you got the "connection to the server was reset" failure when
you attempted to use Guided Help in KB836941. If so, it might be a good
idea to talk with your ISP's tech support people.

2. About NOD32 and Spysweeper:

Both of these applications include "real-time protections" which COULD be
causing your problem. This is especially likely if you installed or
upgradede NOD32 or Spysweeper since 12 April 2008.

In the end, the fastest way you'll get this resolved would be to open a free
support incident. I strongly recommend that you do so ASAP.

Good luck.

Hi PA Bear,

Actually, I did open an incident when you first suggested it. I
didn't get a response until 2 pm today. I tried all their suggestions
- disabling accelerator, NOD32, and Spy Sweeper, plus taking steps to
take fix these possible problems: corrupted system DLL files,
corrupted Windows Update temporary folder, or stopped update
services. But, so far, still no joy. We'll see. . .

Thanks again.

Has Norton, McAfee, Avast and/or Avira AntiVir anti-virus ever been
installed on this machine at any time in the past?

Have you purchased Spysweeper?

Hi TaurArian,

Near as I can tell I've tried all the suggestions on the pages you
cite. I even finally got the automatic guided help to run in its
entirety. Still no joy though. It occurred to me to try updating
Office 2000. That ran with out a hitch! I can't figure it out.

Is there any other data I could gather than might be useful? Anything
to help pinpoint where/when/why the timeout occurs

Thank you.

1. I don't believe any of those AV programs has ever been installed.
There's a slight possibility that the PC came with Norton installed
but, if so, the first thing I would have done is uninstall it.

2. Yes, I have purchased is purchased.

3. I'd totally forgotten about having Internet Download Manager
installed. Plus, it updated itself around the 1st of May. However,
I've uninstalled it too and still get the same results.

Thank you for your continued interest!

I ran the removal tool successfully, but I still get 0x80072EE2. :-(

I'm wondering how it is that I can update Office 2000 successfully,
but not Windows?

Thanks again, Trish.

P.S. I have not received a follow up message on my incident report
after having performed the suggested procedures and submitting the
requested reports. Am I at high risk going without those patches this
long?

never had a problem with it.

I tried all of your suggestions to no avail. However, in a post from several months ago,
someone mentioned an MTU seating on a router. I had upgraded the firmware on my home
router several days ago and left the MTU set at the default of 1500. Come to think of it,
my Internet connection seemed a little sluggish since I upgraded the firmware.

I reset the MTU to 1492, and voila! Windows Update works again.

I write this post so that someone else doesn't overlook a simple solution to a very
frustrating problem.

Router / Firewall / Wireless Router MTU ==> 1492 or less <snip>

<snip> The problem is with the AOL connection. Basically you need to amend the MTU
settings of the WAN down to 1400. You can experiment and see if it works going up to 1460
but it doesn't work past that. <snip>

Hi TaurAian,

Thanks for your input, but I was thinking that his solution didn't
apply to me since I don't have a router. Should i try changing MTU
settings for a direct dialup connection to the Internet. If so, I'd
need to research where they're set and what optimum values would be
for my situation.

Thanks again.

Trish
