Hi - I also have the "wuauclt.exe encountered a problem...." etc error
message when Automatic Updates are enabled, and Automatic updates
fail....could not access the page...I get the error number "0x800706BE".

Does anyone know how I can fix this?
thanks

Download and save the latest version of the Windows Update Agent:

For 32-bit Windows versions [Win 2K, XP, Vista]
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

For 64-bit Windows versions
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe

After the download is completed, close the browser and any other open
programs.
*TEMPORARILY* disable the installed antivirus software from real time
monitoring of the system. Consult the Help file of the installed AV or
visit the manufacturer's web site for details on how to do so.

Now run WindowsUpdateAgent30-xXX.exe [XX is for either the 32 or 64 bit
Windows version installed]

*REENABLE* the AV software so that real time monitoring is Enabled

Did that resolve the issue ?

Thank you for the message. I also received a message from Microsoft online
help via email suggesting the following fix, which appears to have worked
(after restarting the computer):

"Craig, I will send you a batch file which might solve this issue. This
batch file will reregister certain files related to Windows Update and solve
some Windows Corrupted files issue.

1. Kindly download the Autoupdate.zip file attached in the e-mail
2. Save the Autoupdate file to the Desktop, double click on it to extract
the file, make sure the files are extracted on the Desktop.
3. Once the Autoupdate file has been extracted to the desktop; open up the
folder and look for the file name Autoupdate.bat
4. Follow the instructions on the screen

Try to perform the update again."

I am having the same problem. I followed your instructions but my file
location is C:\Prefetch\windowsupdateagent30-X86.EXE-161AFEDO.pf I am not
able to open and modify the file. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I suspect that means the file has not finished downloading yet.

I downloaded the file to my desktop. Closed all programs and double clicked
the icon. I got the message that it was already installed. I searched for
the file location and found it as noted below?

Ah, my mistake. That's an interim copy of the file used by Windows, just ignore it.

Move the downloaded file from the desktop to the top of the C: drive.

Then go to the Start Menu, select Run, type "cmd /k
c:\windowsupdateagent-x86.exe /wuforce" (without the quote marks) and press OK.

Harry,
I followed your instructions, but had to add "30" after agent. The command
worked and I was able to execute the file. I rebooted the machine, but when
it restarted I had to clear 35 wuauclt.exe problem windows to continue. I
also closed all programs and my AV software before initializing the command.
I appears to be getting worse as I used to only clear 10 or 15 error
messages. As soon as I go to the windows update page I get bombarded with
the error messages again. I appreciate your assistance with this annoying
problem.

Ahem. Yes, that's right. Apparently I wasn't having a good brain day yesterday.

Please post the last hundred or so lines from WindowsUpdate.log, which you can
open by going to the Start Menu, selecting Run, typing "WindowsUpdate.log"
(without the quotes) and pressing OK.

At this point I'm inclined to think your machine is infected (or otherwise
seriously stuffed up) but let's see if the log shows anything useful before
jumping to conclusions.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP1).

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

WinXP Pro, Ver. 5.1.2600 SP2 Build 2600
Norton AntiVirus 360

FYI,
When wuauclt.exe error window appears, the wuauclt.exe pricess is running in
the task manager. If I disable automatic updates from local services, the
error continues to pop up and the wuauclt.exe still shows up in the processes
running window. If I disable automatic updates, shouldn't that keep the
wuauclt.exe process from starting?

Yes, unless N360's "system protections" are re-enabling Automatic Updates
service.

What version of N360 is installed (e.g., N360 2008)? How long as it been
installed? Did you upgrade from an earlier Norton application (e.g., NIS
2007; NAV 2006)?

Has the machine ever been connected to the internet recently without an
anti-virus application installed?

N360 includes a firewall: Is the Windows Firewall also enabled?

You first posted to this thread on 09 September: Was this a sudden, new
problem? Has Automatic Updates ever worked on this machine? By any chance
had you recently had occasion to do a Repair Install or a Clean Install of
WinXP?

Renaming the Software Distribution folder did the trick. I was able connect
to the MS updates and the error message has not reappeared. I downloaded
updates throughout the night, and now have SP3, along with other updates.
I always have automatic updates for AV and windows enabled. My latest AV
renewal was in June without any incidents. I had the wuauclt.exe error for a
couple of days before the first post and it kept getting worse as time went
on. I have never had a problem with MS updates in the past. I did not update
anything, or do any repair install or clean install, nor add any new
software. I have no idea how this could have started. I mainly use this
computer for business accounting information and email.

Anyway, I appreciate all of the help you have provided and am very thankfull
for your service.

After a couple of hours trying to figure out how to exclude files or folders
from a virus scan, I contacted Norton for help. They informed me the Norton
360 does not have that option. I am going to switch to a different AV
vendor, as I believe Norton is the source of my errors. Can you recommend a
prefered AV software? Norton has agreed to give me a full refund.

I recommend and use Avast. It's free and can be gotten at www.avast.com

Wise choise IMHO!

I can recommend NOD32 and Kaspersky (anti-virus only, not the suites). If
cost is a factor, I can recommend Avira AntiVir (free): www.free-av.com/

HOW TO fully remove N360 from your machine & replace it:

=> NB: Do NOT install your new AV app until you've done #4 thru #7
below!!

1. Download the installer for your new anti-virus application, saving it to
your desktop.

2. Save this removal tool to your desktop, too:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

3. Physically disconnect the machine from the internet.

4. Uninstall N360, LiveUpdate, and any Norton Add-ons via Add/Remove
Programs.

5. Run the removal tool (#2 above).

6. Reboot.

7. Make absolutely certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled.

8. Reconnect the machine to the internet.

=> NB: Don't do anything else online until you've got your new AV app
installed and its definitions fully updated!

9. Run the installer for your new AV app (#1 above); complete any
Registration process to validate the install (save your Product ID!);
manually update your new AV app to the latest definitions.

=> NB: Your anti-virus application should be configured to seek and
install updates automatically and daily at a time when the machine is
usually running and connected to the internet. It should also be configured
to run a full system scan a few minutes after seeking/installing updates,
also daily. Anything less is simply insufficient these days. Don't forget
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158.

Dear Rick, I hope you can help me, I tried all of the above and am
having no luck getting windows to down load the updates. Code 800706BE
keeps popping up.
When i tried to do a windows update "windows update agent installer
encountered unrecoverable error" I also did a windows update report I
can send you I tried to attach it I couldn't get it to go. Windows
Modules Installer stopped working a few weeks ago and also pops up.
Thank you inadvance for any help you can offer.
Cheryl

Thank you very much but it wouldn't let me do either of the ones from
the 2 end one they asked me to down load (start run ) then it said to
make sure I typed in the comand correctly which I did.
I also noticed today theres a Trustedinstaller who has control of my
computer could this be causing the issues do you think?
Thank you once again for all your help

I have a similar problem loading Vista x64 SP2. I continue to receive "error
RPC_S_Call_failed (0x800706be)". WindowsUpdateAgent30-x64.exe does not fix
the problem. Any suggestions?
