When I log in I get a pop up that says "Windows can't check for updates". I
click on this and it shows 1 update that needs installed. I click it to
install but it immediately says "failed to install - other updates are
installing, try later" and I get the error code 80240016. This happens every
time I try to install it. I have tried all the help/support tasks but havent
found a solution yet.

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP2) when
posting to this newsgroup.

Which update is failing to install (e.g., KB955519) and throws the 80240016
error?

0x80240016 = WU_E_INSTALL_NOT_ALLOWED

Have you tried?...

I have the same trouble. I am using Vista and it is KB936330 that won't load.

Any ideas?

1. Always start your own thread.

0x80240016 is "attempt to install while another install is going on or
reboot is pending"

You might try runing the following commands and rebooting. (Start a command
prompt as administrator)

REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager" /v PendingFileRenameOperations /f
REG DELETE
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\
Auto Update\RebootRequired" /f
REG DELETE
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\
Auto Update" /v RebootRequired /f
REG DELETE
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\UpdateExeVolatile" /f

This should remove most pending install information.

Stick around: This could be an "interesting" Patch Tuesday & aftermath.
