I've just finished MS Updates after a fresh install of Win XP Pro.
Presently, have no anti-virus and only Windows Firewall. I get this message.
Installation Failure
Error Code: 0x8007F0F4
Try to install the update again, or request help ...
FOR
Update for Windows XP (KB942840)
Install this update to increase the performance of web sites that use Ajax.
In my Control Panel/Add-Remove --Show Updates...this KB94240 is Not listed
so I Can't uninstall it, nor, do I see a way to reinstall it, as is suggested
on the MS Update website. Point me in the right direction.
You MVP folks do a hell of a job here. Thanks for being here.

Are you currently running WinXP SP2?

Why don't you have an anti-virus application installed?
=======================
0x8007F0F4 = Setup cannot continue because one or more pre-requisites
required to install failed

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation [applies to upgrades and "fresh installs" as well]

KB942840 is not an error message and AFAIK Hotfix KB942840 is not offered by
Windows Update.
Download links for Hotfix KB942840 are listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942840. Carefully and thoroughly evaluate
the listed Symptoms to see if you even want this Hotfix installed.
NB: If you're running Windows Script Agent v5.7, this Hotfix does not apply
to you and will fail to install.

It is a major security risk to have a machine connected to the internet or
any networks without a functional anti-virus application installed. If you
don't want your "backup" to include the anti-virus application: (1)
Physically disconnect the machine from the internet; (2) uninstall the
anti-virus application; (3) reboot; and then (4) do your backup.

I never said (KB942840) was an error message, it is clearly a Knowledge Base
article noted by the KB. From my first post I stated the error message was
Error Code: 0x8007F0F4
and it also stated that "Update for Windows XP (KB942840)
Install this update to increase the performance of web sites that use Ajax."
The link you included this time and the 2nd time have absolutely nothing to
do with my problem.
I am posting in the Windows Update newsgroup, not the anti virus group. It
is not for you to worry about that, stick to the issue or just say you don't
know.

Sorry, wrong end of the stick: If you had IE7 installed, you didn't need to
install Hotfix KB942840.

Mr. Bill should correct the UPdate page so that it doesn't show a FAILED
download, if you're using IE7. It shouldn't download at all.
After installing the fix, reinstalling IE7 and rebooting, the update in my
Control Panel is not there... What a waste of our valuable time trying to
figure this out. Thnx for all the efforts!

BTW, I use Kapersky's Security and Antivirus

Not everyone subscribes to the same newsgroup server and not all newsgroup
servers are synchronized at the same time and not all people check the
newsgroups consistently. Given all that - it is entirely plausible someone
might only get ONE response out of this entire thread and have no idea -
without proper quoting, etc - what is going on.
For example - there are many people using the web interface and/or
newsreaders who might only ever see the above.
Thus why I like including this:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/browse_frm/thread/1e1149b85d698477/bcd9662000245580#bcd9662000245580
So everyone can indeed see the entire thread. Although I have noticed that
sometimes even that is incomplete...
Having said all that - about your original problem...
"Error Code: 0x8007F0F4

FOR
Update for Windows XP (KB942840)"
Looking at the patch:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942840
... do you need this one?
If so - and assuming when you say "Windows XP Pro" you mean "Windows XP
Professional Edition" and not "Windows XP Professional x64 Edition" -- what
happens when you download and attempt to install the patch manually? (
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=0222E6F0-1289-42D8-9DB0-F09D3D99766E&displaylang=en )
As for the rest of your post - yes, I read it. So I know you got it
installed at this point - or actually - you went to a lot of effort to
install something you did not need since you had IE7 and the article for the
patch specifies "Internet Explorer 6". ;-)

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

That's why I asked you if you really wanted/needed this Hotfix (not update),
since you had IE7 installed:
<QP>
Symptoms [indicating you may want to install KB942840]:
• You are running a Windows Server 2003-based computer or a Windows XP-based
computer
• [and] You are running version 5.6 of Microsoft Windows Script.
• [and] You use Internet Explorer 6 to view a Web page that uses Microsoft
JScript.
[and you are experiencing] slow Web browser performance...
