We've been getting this problem repeatedly this week -- whenever we install a
Microsoft Windows Security updates.

The work around suggested -- saving attachments to your desktop rather than
opening them up in mail is fine. But if someone forwards you a message from
another correspondent -- I can't open it. I get this "failed" command.

From what I've seen this problem seems to be the result of two MicroSoft
Windows programs fighting each other -- specifically IE8 and Windows Mail.
(HELLO? IS SOMEONE AT MICROSOFT WORKING ON THIS?) It seems to happen every
other time a new Security Update is installed.

HELP!

FYI -- I'm using MicroSoft Windows Live One Care as my antivirus/internet
security program. So that SHOULDN'T be the problem.

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.
State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., Vista SP1; Vista SP2)
in your first post.

That's a known issue that is affecting some who installed IE8.
One workaround is to uninstall IE8, which reverts you back to IE7.
If you decide to uninstall IE8, follow these instructions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Instead of uninstalling IE8, another option is to upgrade
your email program to Windows Live Mail:

Please explain why i should "upgrade" to Windows Live Mail. This computer,
and it's software is just 3 weeks old.

That question has been answered many times before, so be assured that Gary
has provided the answer in the past. Also note that there are sometimes more
than a hundred questions a say answered by just a few volunteers. The
traditional advice for newsgroups is that people read many previous threads
before asking questions in a newsgroup, but in that is seldom done in this
newsgroup. It should be done and probably most questions would not even
exist if people were to simply look for previous answers.

Windows Live Mail is an upgrade because it has been revised since release of
Vista, whereas Windows Mail has not been revised since release of Vista. I
know that many people don't like Windows Live Mail but I can't speak from
experience since I have not yet tried it. Windows Live Mail certainly sounds
advantageous since Microsoft will fix bugs in it but they won't fix any of
the bugs that exist in Windows Mail.

RASmith83151,
The matter is not why you should or should not.
The matter is, in order to solve the problem, there are only 2 alternatives.
Un-install IE8 or upgrade to Windows Live Mail.
Until or unless Microsoft comes up with a " fix ", we can debate till
kingdom come and we still have only 2 alternatives.

Because it is one of the few ways you can alleviate your problem.

There are many of us who do not consider WLMail an upgrade from WinMail,
especially since all WinMail development was stopped by executive fiat in
June 2006 while Vista was still in beta.

WLMail could be considered a replacement for the unfinished application
called Windows Mail, however.

This depends on the definition of upgrade and "replacement for the
unfinished application".

I am getting tired of getting this error message every time I try to open an
email with an attachment in Windows Vista Home Premium. If I want to view
the attachment, I have to forward the email to my office account and open it
in XP - this is getting ridiculous.
I have McAfee Security Center, and have never had a problem with opening
attachments before I had to buy a new computer and could not get the needed
support if I purchased the Windows XP.
I think this is just a ploy to get consumers to purchase the latest and
supposedly greatest releases of software programs.
Any suggestions on what to do to get the attachments to open?
BTW - I have also checked the Web for any updates that have not been
downloaded and everything is up to date.
Thanks for any help I can get.

[Crosspost to IE General]

Have you installed IE8?

Did you disable McAfee Security Center's anti-virus, anti-spyware, and
firewall components and then enable the Windows Firewall prior to installing
IE8?

Has another McAfee application or a Norton application ever been installed
on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you
bought it)?

Is "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Vista (KB969897)"
listed in Installed Updates?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

If you do the following, does the behavior persist?

=> Start | All Programs | right-click on Windows Mail | select Properties
| Start in <=delete the value here (leaving it empty/blank) & OK your way
out.

NB: Uninstalling IE8 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) should
resolve the behavior but you should not have encountered it in the first
place if IE8 was installed properly; cf.

I realize you're trying to help but seriously this is a major problem that
needs to be resolved programatically between Microsoft and McAfee.

Uninstalling the browser is not acceptable (that's McAfee's current
recommendation)
Manually messing around with firewall and anti-virus settings, an error
prone and risky process, every time Microsoft updates it's browser is also
unacceptable. Firefox, Chrome and other browsers don't have this issue, and
neither should Microsoft.

Uninstall McAffee, reboot, retest
If OK reinstall McAfee (Whatever unmentioned version) without the Mail or
Office intergration
Its not an MS issue, its a McAfee issue / problem

Actually, based on the problems that have been posted in various groups,
including this one, the answer is for Microsoft to properly debug it's
software prior to releasing it out of Beta. This is not the first and I am
certain it will not be the last major release from Microsoft that is rushed
out, expecting the consumer to debug it for them.

My solution and recommendation, for what free advice is worth. DON'T BE
THE FIRST GUY ON THE BLOCK TO INSTALL NEW SOFTWARE FROM MICROSOFT, or any
other software for that matter.

It's ironic, because people are constantly recommending that users uninstall
the all-intrusive McAfee because of all the problems it causes computers.
