My internet provider is Netzero and I use Outlook Express as my e-mail account.
My problem is no doubt simple but I cannot fit it even instructions from
NetZero.
I can receive mail but cannot send.
Out going mail is authsmtp.netzero.com (also tried .net) outgoing port is 25
but have tried 587 but does not work.
Incomeing mail is pop.netzero.com (also tried.net).incoming port is 110 okay

This is the message I get.
When I send an e-mail it goes to the out box, the number one beside the
outbox dissappears and the e-mail goes grey but will stay in the outbox. I
try it again and the same thing happens.I try and change the port # but
doesn't help.I tried authsmt.netzero.net with same results, I just noticed
the t missing in smp.

Norton or ZA could be the problem. Neither is really liked by OE. As far as
turning off e-mail scanning, it may be necessary for you to remove Norton &
reinstall it in custom mode and opt out of e-mail scanning when you see the
option. Sometimes just unchecking it is not enough. It wouldn't hurt to get
rid of Norton all together though. I would never even consider using it with
OE.

Norton (AntiVirus): You needn't uninstall NAV, just disable it's Email
Protection. It in fact provides no /additional/ protection and even
Symantec says it's not necessary:

<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
</QP>
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2002111812533106

ZA: Assuming you're running ZA Free and that you do NOT have Norton Internet
Security of Norton 360 installed, you can (1) disable or uninstall ZA Free,
(2) enable the Windows Firewall and then (3) see if things improve.

Hi Peter:
After you last instructions I realize that I do not have Outlook Express.6
but just plain Outlook Express. 600.2800.1807.

Secondly, after trying a number of sequence adding and deleting mail I can
no long receive or send mail from Netzero. Since I'm having so much trouble,
should I download a newer version of O.E? Will try later on today.

I'm not too keen on deleting Norton just yet. Have just disabled e-mail
coming and going and deleted Zonealarm. My laptop was sent back to HP because
the modem failed and it should be available the first of the week. I have the
same programs on my laptop and would like to try it before making an drastic
changes.
Thank you for all your help and I will persevere.

Hutch, if your machine's fully patched at Windows Update, you have the
appropriate & fully-patched version of OE6 for Windows 2000; Furthermore,
reinstalling OE won't resolve the problem.

I did reply to your first post to this thread on 07 Sept-07 but it's not
appearing in my newsreader (OE) here. (The MS newsservers have been
suffering some problems lately.) See my reply in Google Groups archive if
it's not appearing for you either:

Hi Pa Bear:

I have tried several things in the last couple of days: In fact I changed
things so I was not receiving e-mails into Outlook, but I am now. Changed my
identity with another account, which did not send emails.

This is what I have done:
Click on tools Internet accounts
UNDER MAIL: I have pop.netzero.net --set as default
Click on Propertities MAIL ACCOUNT: pop.netzero.net
UNDER USER INFO:
Name: hutch...@netzero.net
E-mail...same
CLICK ON SERVERS:
Incoming; pop.netzero.net
Outgoing: authsmtp.netzero.net
ACCOUNT NAME: hutch...@netzero.net
Password ******
ADVANCE: Outgoing 25...Incoming 110

This is the current message I'm getting

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of

inactivity. Account: 'pop.netzero.net', Server: 'authsmtp.netzero.net',

Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F

I have it set a 2 mins.
Mail comes in right away. I'm on Windows auto undate. same with Norton.
Whick I have the e-mail disabled.

According to http://www.netzero.net/support/email/email-setup-msoex5.html,
Step #13, the Account Name should NOT be the entire email address.

[I certainly hope you didn't post the /real/ address in your reply.]

Hi Pa Bear.

I changed my account name to hutch309.2.
Can receive but cannot send.
Not sure what to do, prehaps use Netzero for all our mail and not use
Outlook Express. It's been a very frustration couple of days, as no matter
what I do, I cannot send in Outlook???
Very unhappy ,
Hutch309

Well, it would appear that the problem's not on your end, Hutch, at least
IMHO.

Dear Pa Bear:
Thanks for trying to straighten out my Outlook Express problems. I have done
nothing in the last few days about this problem. My Laptop is out for modem
replacement and I would like to try it before I make any changes to my desk
top. In the mean time we are receiving mail in Outlook and sending mail out
in NetZero Will let you know how we make out
Thanks again

I have had to do much the same thing. I recieve mail on Outlook
Express fine but outgoing messages are problematic. I have used the
the excite.com internet accout which is my alternate e-mail when quick
replies are essential. I am close to giving up on Outlook but It has
been my primary e-mail account so to have it working again would be
nice. I do think it is the ISP causing the problem although from
others with the same service I know they are having similar e-mail
problems, the ISP has been unwilling to admit to the possibility they
are the source of the trouble. 1-1/2 years of no problems then
degradation to nearly complete outgoing mail failure has occurred over
the past few weeks. I just have begun using G-Mail as a tertiary
alternative.
