I have had to reinstall this 2 times this week and after the last install I
ran a scan and again it is asking for this critical update! Each update
states that the q823559 was successful...What's the problem here?

How did you go about reinstalling IE6 in Win98? What issues were you having
that you thought reinstalling IE6 might resolve?

If you (1) download the installer for KB823559 from the following link,
saving it to your desktop, (2) double-click on the saved file to install it
manually, and then (3) reboot, does Windows Update still offer it?

Support for Win98 ended in July 2006. While MS offers free support for
Windows Update issues, this support no longer applies to Win98.

It was an error. I was supposed to repair IE and instead I went into Control
Panel>Add\Remove and D-clicked IE. I then refreshed my memory of the
Advanced option on reinstate previous version and clicked ok instead of
cancel to exit. The application uninstalled and reinstalled the previous
version 5. At this point I went to MS Support and DL the MSIEv.6 and
reinstalled it. Next I went to WindowsUpdate to check for critical updates
and installed all of which q823559 was one. I have left Windows Critical
Update on and the next day a prompt for critical update. Upon checking I
found the offer of q823559 again. After running the install again I check
with initial scan and again the prompt shows up...This is in Control Panel
as a windows security update. Is it possible that the scanner is wrong?

KB823559 (or Q823559) offered (again)? Is it listed in the Update History
section and if so, does this listing indicate a Successful install? Does
Windows Update offer you any other security updates?

No, I have never had to reinstall win98se or IE.

The scan was the Welcome page scan. I do not see the "custom" scan. I do see
[Other Options] \View| Personalize| Support. Is this what you mean by
"custom", to Personalize Windows Update?

It is listed in the View Installation History several times, each time it
states the install was successful.

Initially the Update site did offer other updates (6) in all, of which
q823559 was one.

I have not tried the manual update since q823559 is already there.

The above notwithstanding:

I'd strongly recommend uninstalling notoriously buggy and
no-longer-supported "Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification" via
Add/Remove Programs. Support for Win98 ended over 2 years ago and no Win98
updates have been released since then and none will ever be released.
Should you have occasion to reinstall Win98 (after having first uninstalled
IE6) and need to get the machine fully patched again, simply
download/install IE6 SP1 manually and then go to Windows Update website.

Given that mysterious IE6 business to which you referred in an earlier reply
to this thread, I'd also strongly recommend Overinstalling IE6 SP1:

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline). Start |
Run | (type in) IE6Setup.exe | [OK]. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all
the parts you use (e.g., Outlook Express) but none that you didn't
originally download, and overinstall. Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot
the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

Hi, I found this error in the winupdatelog;

I did a cleanboot and did use ccleaner so this log may have been erased. As
far as the critical autoupdates feature is concerned, it may be a "dead
alvin", but if I did not have it on I would have assumed all this was ok
when it really was not. So it did protect in that sense of a reinstall after
the accidental uninstall of IEv.6 and the return to previous version 5. This
occurs when the user is in the radio pick and in the [advanced] dialogue and
clicks ok instead of cancel causing the uninstall of IEv.6 to begin.
If I need to install manually with safe mode, there are about 15 DL choices
in that list. Do I need to DL each one?

Have you tried overinstalling IE6 SP1 as I suggested in an earlier reply to

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?

How is the machine connecting to the internet (i.e., dial-up; DSL; cable;
satellite)? Is a router involved? Is an internet (or web) accelerator
installed (typically included with low-priced dial-up ISPs)?

The 0x801901F4 error(s) means that the update(s) failed to download AND
install.

IIRC only older versions of Zone Alarm firewall will work properly in Win98,
Jim. If you're NOT running Zone Alarm v6.1.744.1, uninstall it now. [If
you're connecting to the DSL modem via a router, the router alone should
provide adequate protection for the Win98 box. Others here are sure to
disagree with me but so be it.]

Moving on...

[You will want to print or copy/paste the following instructions into
Notepad for offline reference.]

1. AFAIK, no currently supported version of SpySweeper's supported in Win98.
Assuming you've not purchased SpySweeper (or if you don't get if "free" from
your ISP or MSN), please (a) disable all SpySweeper Guards (protections)
then (b) uninstall it.

2. Very briefly & temporarily, disable ZA firewall (if still installed)
*and* all SpySweeper Guards (if still installed) *and* Avast *and*
physically disconnect the machine from the internet. Don't reconnect until
Step #4 below!

3a. Now overinstall IE6 SP1 per my previous reply to this thread:

3b. After rebooting, repeat Step #2 above!!

4. Now reconnect to the internet and go to Windows Update and try again.
Follow all prompts.

you don't connect via a router) until ZA (v6.1.744.1 or earlier) has been
re-enabled!!

OK, I tried this approach and on the ie6setup.exe the minimal and the prompt
at the end of the install secession states [radio button] all these
components are already installed do you want to exit and the other [radio]
asks if the you want to install all components. So I just chose next>next>on
out. Is that the correct way?
Then I went to win update and tried again and the log in %windir% looks ok.

OK, next I tried the reinstall of ie6setup with [radio button] reinstall all
components (which is not a minimal) and went thru the whole approach again.
Here I had 3 critical updates to install with a reboot at the end. This is
the log of win update on this machine which appears to be successful.

Yep, looks like you got 3 of them that time. I hope that solves it & you
will not be offered any of them (especially 823559) again. But, if so,
here are a few things to check...

(1) Try to uninstall it FIRST, at "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs,
Install/Uninstall tab". It looks like this: "Windows 98 Q823559 Update".
Now, go to Windows Update, and see whether it will come in well-- & just
once.

(2) What are your versions of these files...?...

Well, I kind of recall it worked for someone to uninstall it first.
Those registry keys I mentioned could be useful too. But, fine-- you go

Yes, I did that exact sequence 1,2,3a,3b,4

ZA-6.0.667.000 version; connects via a single device router [NAPT] and
modem.

I just have McAfee shield on because it will come up quickly, whereas Avast
required another reboot.

Your replies are worthless to most of us if you don't quote the entire post

You cannot and should not have two (2) anti-virus installed and loading at
boot.

=> If your VirusScan subscription is not current:

1. Uninstall McAfee VirusScan (or whatever the McAfee application is) via
Add/Remove Programs;

2. Download & run this removal tool:

3. Reboot.

=> If your VirusScan subscription is current:

1. Uninstall Avast; and...

2. Reboot.

With only one (1) anti-virus application installed now, if you encounter ANY
further Windows Update problems whatsoever, disable ZoneAlarm.

However, since (1) your Win98 machine is now fully patched and since (2) no
updates have been released for Win98 since June 2006 and since (3) no more
Win98 updates will ever be released as support for Win98 ended on 10 July
2006, you really don't have to worry about it anymore.

I now consider this case closed. If PCR or anyone else wants to "play" now,
be my guest...

That program, critical update, is still stating that the update is not
installed. I think you [PCR] may have exposed why this is happening. The
regedit key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\Updates\W
98.SE\UPDQ823559

This should be in Win98 updates not Win98 SE updates. The Citical Update
program most likely reads the msinfo32 log first. It does not see this in
Win98 updates and ignores it in Win98 SE updates. Understand?

all we really want is for Windows Update to stop offering it. And are
the files both located in...?...

Interesting. How could everything look so good in your Windows Update
log & in your registry-- & YET you have older files!?! But that sounds
like it could be the problem all right. I'm still trying to think,

(1) What folder are Html32.cnv & Msconv97.dll in?
Normally, they'd be in...

(2) Are they located anywhere else too;
if so, what versions are they?

Jim's machine is now fully patched. He has no more updates to install.
There's no solution to a problem that doesn't exist.

I understood your point & might have eventually agreed. HOWEVER, it
turned out his file versions were wrong in QFECheck for 823559, despite
his Windows Update.log was reporting that update to be a success. Now,
all seems to be well, though, that he uninstalled the update FIRST in
Add/Remove before taking it one final time. He said...!...

windowsupdate and reinstalled and worked as far as QFEcheck and FF check
and windowsupdate Welcome scan [all worked] this time. I think what was
