I do get the notification "An unknown error has occurred"
occassionally. Presently, today's messages at Inbox remain not downloaded.
How can I
resolve the problem?
p.s - Tried to send msg thru OE newsgroup but unable to send due to
the problem. Now sending thru Google Groups.
TIA
Hi Bruce
Thanks for your prompt response. I have managed to download my messages in
OE by leaving the OE open for about 3 hours and the messages got downloaded
but oh so slowly. That is obviously not a solution.
To follow your advise to first save the messages in the 3 folders to 3 newly
created folders, I'd like some more advise. To save the messages one by one
would take quite long indeed, considering my Inbox has close to 2K messages.
Could I save all of them at one go somehow? And then do the same with the
other two folders.
I am replying from OE so I can do it the usual way which is most comfortable
for me, and also to save those that I value for future reference, rather
than having to go to two different places to work it out.
I your reply I would appreciate if you could include your reply of yesterday
so that I can have it all in OE again, to make life easier.
Thanks
Are you speaking of Outlook Express folders, or Hotmail folders?
If Hotmail, someone else will have to help you. If Outlook Express folders,
do the following:
Move any messages you want to save out of Deleted Items, Sent Items and the
Inbox to folders that you create and then close OE and delete the dbx files
for those three folders.
Note that you do not have to move messages one at a time. Highlight one
message and then Ctrl+A will highlight them all. Now you can Right Click and
Move To Folder, (or just drag them), and they will all go at once.
If you want to move a portion of the messages to one new folder, and then
another portion to another folder, etc., click on the first message to
highlight. Scroll down to the last of the section of messages you want to
move and hold down the Shift key and click the left mouse button. Now that
/section/ is highlighted. Move it.
Now, continue with the cleanup.
Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in
Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run.
In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.
With OE closed, find the Deleted Items.dbx, Sent Items.dbx and Inbox .dbx
files and delete them. New files will be created automatically when you open
OE.
Compact all folders as described below.
To help prevent this in the future:
Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.
After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.
Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.
Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2 or SP3}.

I am speaking of OE folders, but I don't know if there is a problem. In the
left pane I have the Hotmail below the OE folders and below it are the
folders Inbox/Sent/items/Deleted items/. All the msgs I receive or send or
delete are in these folders automatically. I also have the same folders
under "Local Folders at the top of the pane but there is hardly anything in
there. Is this OK or do I need to make changes?
I had moved all my Inbox and Sent items to the new created folders. This
took quite some time especially for the 2K items in Inbox especially since
it periodically stopped because "An unknown error has occurred" and I had to
stop, restart and start over again. Why do I get this error?
After deleting the 3 folders and opening IE again, my Inbox and Sent items
folders are empty. Perhaps its because I had moved all their contents to the
new created folders. What shall I do now? Shall I move them back to the OE
folders?

So if you move messages or delete them, those changes will get
propagated.
The LOCAL FOLDERS in OE are used for POP3 accounts and any user created
folders that you desire.
If you Move a message from a Hotmail folder in OE to a local folder,
then when you connect to Hotmail, OE will delete the message from the
Hotmail folder on the server. And if you then access Hotmail via the
web interface, you won't see that message there anymore.

What you see in your Hotmail-specific folders "mirror" what's on the server
and what you see at www.hotmail.com. If you delete a message from, e.g.,
your Hotmail-specific Inbox folder, it will be deleted from the server and
the inbox on the webmail page.
Incoming mail from your POP3 accounts come into the default Inbox local
folder (at the top of the Folders pane). Unlike the Hotmail account,
messages in any other folders on an account's corresponding webmail page do
not download into OE. Furthermore, if you've not enabled "Leave messages on
the server" option for the POP3 account, incoming messages are deleted from
the inbox on the webmail page after they download into OE.
Outgoing emails from all accounts and outgoing news posts all use the
default Outbox local folder. Copies of sent Hotmail messages are then found
in the Hotmail-specific Sent Items folder while all other copies go to the
default Sent Items local folder.
Need more confusion? You can now access your Hotmail account via POP3 for
free. I'll tell you more later, if you're interested.
PS: See "disable email scanning" below.
General OE Caveats:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm
- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.
- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection:
Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email

When you moved the messages from the Hotmail folders in OE to the Local
Folders in OE that deleted on the messages on the Hotmail which is why
you don't see the messages any more when using IE to logon onto the
Hotmail web site.
Moving lots of messages into or out of Hotmail folders is prone to
communications errors which why you kept getting error messages.
You could move the messages back to the Hotmail folders in OE. That's
your choice. If you want to be able to see the messages using the web
interface or from another PC, then that's what you should do.

1. Open OE Tools | Accounts | Mail: Select (highlight) the Hotmail account
then press the REMOVE button.
2. Close OE & reboot.
3. Open OE, then open Tools | Accounts: click on the ADD ... MAIL buttons.
4. Now configure your Hotmail account in as a POP3 account per these
instructions:
How to add your e-mail account to Microsoft Outlook Express

You may find the info here helpful, too:
http://liveunplugged.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!F92775FC46A390CA!422.entry
IMPORTANT!! When you access a Hotmail account via POP3:
1. You will not have any of the separate Hotmail-specific folders you had
previously (i.e., the Hotmail-specific Inbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items, and
Bulk Mail folders).
2. Only new (incoming) messages will download and they'll download into the
default Inbox folder (i.e., along with new messages from any other POP3
accounts you may have running in OE).
3. Unless you enable the "Leave messages on the server" option, the new
messages you download into OE will be deleted from the mailserver. This
means that the messages will NOT be available when you use another computer.
You'll find this option (and a few others) in Tools | Accounts | Mail |
[Hotmail account] | Properties | Advanced | Delivery (section).

If you're still having problems accessing the account (including in a new OE
identity), switching to POP3 access may be your only choice if you want to
be able to access any new messages (only) in OE.
That being said, I suspect WebDAV access may be discontinued in the (very
near) future. If and when that happens, the only way anyone will be able to
access a Hotmail account in OE will be via POP3.
Historical timeline:
The end of WebDAV access for free Hotmail accounts was first announced in
Apr-08:
http://emailsupport.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!5D6F5A79A79B6708!5359.entry
A month later, they decided to delay it:
http://emailsupport.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!5D6F5A79A79B6708!5745.entry
In Sept-08, we saw a hint that POP3 access soon would be available for
everyone:
http://mailcall.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!CC9301187A51FE33!44348.entry
Free POP3 access in 2009 was confirmed in Dec-08:
http://windowslivehelp.com/community/p/3877/13651.aspx#13651
Free POP3 access for many was announced on 13 Jan-09, then finally for
everyone on 13 Mar-09:

NB: If you've got more than one (1) Hotmail account running in OE, tell me
now!
1. As illogical as it may sound or appear, first I'd like you to make sure
that IE is optimized for Hotmail:
Optimize IE for Windows Live Hotmail
http://emailsupport.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!5D6F5A79A79B6708!6203.entry
2. Now confirm that you're not having ANY problems whatsoever accessing the
account via the web-page: www.hotmail.com. If you are, STOP HERE.
================================
If it's still taking "around 3 hours" for your Hotmail folders to
synchronize in OE:
3. Open IE Tools | Internet Options | Privacy | (click on) Sites: In the box
you see, type...
and ALLOW cookies.
4. Open OE Tools | Accounts | Mail (tab) | select (highlight) the Hotmail
account then press the EXPORT button; Save the exported IAF to your desktop
for convenience.
5. Create a new identity via OE File | Identities | Add new identity.
6. With OE open to the new identity, open Tools | Accounts | Mail (tab) |
press the IMPORT button and point the wizard to the IAF file on your
desktop. This will automatically configure the Hotmail account in the new
identity.
7. With OE still open to the new identity, click on Tools | Accounts | Mail
| [Hotmail account] | Properties: Make sure the "Include this account..."
option is checked (enabled), then OK your way out.
8. With OE still open to the new identity, use the keyboard combination
CTRL+M to sync with the Hotmail server.
Do you see the same, slow behavior in the new identity or not?

Did most of it but for item 9 : "Click the "Restricted sites" icon, click
"Sites," select a listed site (if there are any), and then click "Remove."
Repeat this step until all the sites are removed from the list. Click "OK"
when you are finished. "
There were tens of thousands of sites there, and I was only allowed to
remove one at a time. There should be a button to "Remove All" or something.
Tried other ways to remove all but couldn't. Managed to remove maybe a
thousand till the letter "F". I am already sick and I could have died. Gave
up removing any further to another day.
Did all the other items OK.

I am not sure about this new identity thing. What will happen to my

Nothing will happen to it whatsoever. Creating a new identity does NOT
delete/remove any other identities.

Yes, but your orginal "Ben Stevenson" identity will remain the default for
now.

Anything you want as long as it's NOT "Main Identity" or has the word "main"
in it. How about naming it simply "Ben2"?
Why I asked you to do this: If the Hotmail account works in the new
identity, this would suggest that the original identity is damaged, but
let's not cross that bridge until and unless we come to it.
Ben, look at this illustration:

Yes exactly. With some of my own created folders at the upper OE part. The
lower "Hotmail" is exactly as mine, and all my msgs come into the Inbox of
the Hotmail.
Your last reply means you had been accessing the Hotmail account via WebDAV
[Don't concern yourself over what WebDAV means] while you were a Qwest
customer.
Since you're now a Comcast customer and the Hotmail account is no longer
associated with Qwest, you may not be able to access the account via WebDAV
in any identity. We'll know for sure once you've completed all eight (8)
steps in my post on 17 Mar-09:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general/msg/0faae43bf71182fe
[If it's any comfort to you, no one will be able to access a free Hotmail
account in OE the way you had been accessing it a few months from now.]
Until we've got your Hotmail account running in OE again, you can always
access it via www.hotmail.com.
