Is 6.0 firmware optimzed for Makerware or ReplicatorG? If the answer is
ReplicatorG, then do I have to download and install a new version of
    replicatorg?

just trying to decide whether or not to install the new firmware.

how often on average do they come out with firmware updates?

    thanks.
I've printed using the 6.0 firmware on my Replicator, using both PLA and ABS, from both ReplicatorG and MakerWare, and using both Skeinforge and Miracle-Grue, and both extruders, and all combinations worked fine. MBI comes out with firmware updates fairly rarely - about once every six months. The firmware is all on github, so you can download and build more often, as there's work going on more often (more frequently leading up to releases, of course). As far as the 6.0 software goes, it's got some very nice enhancements. In particular, being able to pause in mid-print and do things (e.g. change filament) makes swapping colors easier, and it supports a 'cold' pause, heating back up on resume. Others on the list have reported improve accelerated print quality (less ringing).

FYI,

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a "7.0" soon.

There's been quite a bit of activity in both the firmware and ReplicatorG areas in MakerBot's github and it all seems to be directed to bringing Jetty-style acceleration, if not all of the other Jetty improvements, to the MightyBoard based systems.  I've been very tempted to build and install, but it looks like there are some potentially one-way changes to the EEPROM format that I don't want to worry about yet.

Jetty -- are you involved, or is this just MakerBot doing the port? It looks like it is Alison and Far doing the commits mostly.

But I, for one, cannot wait!

Hi Jetty,

What is your recommendation on whether to upgrade to your firmware with 6.0?

Since I don't fully understand how or if Jetty firmware co-exists with the Replicator firmware, I wasn't sure whether to try it or not.  Looks like a wait-and-see kind of situation.

The 6.0 Replicator firmware isn't Jetty-fied as regards acceleration. But it does
have some UI fixes and UI improvements from the Jetty firmware. The stuff happening
out there in MBI's github repositories as regards Jetty acceleration is not part of
the 6.0 firmware.
