Unless someone has already picked this up, I'm going to make a brief phone call to this venue and see if they have any space available on the 12th. I cannot take lead on this in the long term, but will at least be able to find out if there's availability. I'll report back soon.

Cheers,

A follow-up; The woman I spoke to was sympathetic, but the center rents only to registered non-profits, or events sponsored by registered non-profits. Unless someone on the list runs a non-profit and would be willing to sponsor us, it looks like this won't work.

But hey - this is exactly what we need to do. Make calls and get info until we find something that works. Please keep sourcing ideas, all!

Cheers,
Sara

I'll call my church during lunch today. Maybe I can convince them to sponsor under our sexuality discussion group's name, which means no rent. No promises, but it's worth a shot.

The church is Arlington Street Church, Unitarian Universalist on the corner of Boylston and Arlington in the Back Bay.

Hey Desmond,

Thank you so much! And funny you should mention that; this is the suggestion one of my friends in Boston has just made:

Contact the Unitarian Universalist Churches in and around Boston.  They do go for this sort of thing.

There are obviously several UU churches in the Boston Area. (http://www.boston-online.com/Religion/Unitarian_Universalist/index.html)

Can someone familiar with Boston pick up calling these locations, and seeing if there's any interest?

Cheers,
Sara Eileen

Think good thoughts about Arlington Street -- I'm a member and lay leader, out to the minister and others, and have a sexuality discussion group there. I've already emailed the minister and administrator to see if this is possible.

If not, sme other churches:
Community Church of Boston, Boylston Street
First Church in Boston, Marlboro Street

Another is Boston's MCC church, altho I don't know where they meet.

Dignity Boston may also have some ideas

Someone at the meet-up (DJPet?) suggested that we get in touch with the Bound in Boston organization, which is have a sex-related event on the same day, to see if there was anyway we could make something work there.  RopeRider, the BiB organizer, reached out on his own initiative this morning in an offline message and offered a few suggestions.  He also very generously offered us the use of his class room space during the periods it was not otherwise being used.

I don't think this works out as an alternative space; it looks like the biggest open window is two hours, and then there may be a couple of one hour windows separated by long intervals.  The event is also out in the subburbs, and it would be hard to draw people out there for just a couple hours of continuous event.  But *thank you!* to RopeRider for making the offer!

If no alternative space presents itself for the 12th, there might be some opportunities here for crosspromotion and collaboration but I'm going to keep hoping that we're able to find an alternative venue for next week.

Following up further, RopeRider points out that there's actually a bigger time frame open than I thought.  There's a 4 1/2 hour window open for one room between 4:30 pm and 9 pm.  During 1.5 hours of that time, a second room would also be available.  This still isn't a lot of time but it would give room for up to say 15 presentations to take place in an abbreviated time period.

Also a note that the event is accessible via public transportation
Getting to Norwood on mass transit is a pain, but it can be done: http://www.boundinboston.com/events/viaMbta.aspx

Given the odd timing, I'd still prefer personally to keep looking for something better (or postpone) but its definitely a doable option, and another big thanks to RopeRider for being so generous with his space!

Hey Mike,

I don't know how the rest of the list feels, but I would personally rather see *something* happen than postpone entirely. Even if it's only for a few hours - even if we all just go to a restaurant, meet one another, and talk!

My reasoning here is that as the event has already been put in our personal calendars, let's at least take the opportunity for interested folks to meet, speak, and keep our in-person momentum going.

Maybe this is something to plan around if we don't find a venue by, say, the middle of next week. I would really like to meet/see everyone!

Cheers,
Sara

Sara, in that case I agree with Mike in that whatever ends up
happening should be treated as planning something else entirely.

If postponing becomes a necessity, I think it would be far preferable
to do that and plan something else like Mike suggested[0]. Meeting at
a restaurant at an appointed time could be fun and I'm sure quite a
number of *already engaged* individuals such as yourself would be up
for it, but going ahead with "the event" in this fashion is a mistake.
Call it what it is, so call it a "meetup of eager KFA participants,"
but don't pretend it's going to be something it's not.
