Dear Friends of JPD Religious Education,
There’s a lot going on! This newsletter includes announcements about
OWL training, other JPD training events, exciting events beyond the
JPD, and job openings. Enjoy!

OWL Training
We are pleased to announce several upcoming training events for
teachers of Our Whole Lives grades 7-9 and 10-12! The next OWL
training will be held June 6-8 at All Souls Church, Unitarian, in
Washington, DC. Download a registration form from the JPDLFD Google
Group: http://groups.google.com/group/jpdlfd/web/opportunities
Registration is $190 per person, which covers food, facilitator
honoraria, and a notebook of resources. Housing is not included.
Congregations should supply the curriculum books for their teachers.
The registration deadline is May 22. Although the cost of offering an
OWL training has gone up significantly in the last year, the
generosity of All Souls Church helps keep the price of this event low.
Looking further ahead, save the dates for OWL training events at the
Temenos retreat center (September 12-14) and at the UU Congregation of
Fairfax (September 19-21). There are no training events scheduled in
the JPD for other levels of OWL.
JPD Events
A number of other leadership and professional development events are
on the horizon in the JPD.
The Journey Toward Wholeness Transformation TEAM invites newcomers to
their next meeting as they form caucuses for Youth & Young Adult anti-
racist activists. The meeting is on Saturday, May 3, from 10:00 am to
3:00 pm at Cedar Lane UU Church in Bethesda, MD. Visit
http://groups.google.com/group/jpdlfd/web/opportunities to find flyers
for Youth and Young Adults.
Also on May 3, volunteer teachers and Religious Education
professionals are invited to Spirit Play training at the Towson UU
Church from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. At last count, there were three spots
left. Contact Becky Brooks by e-mailing redirec...@firstunitarian.net
for more information.
Members of the JPD chapter of the Liberal Religious Educators
Association (LREDA) are invited to a retreat May 7 and 8 at the
Temenos retreat center near West Chester, PA. The registration
deadline of April 21 is quickly approaching. Contact Cynthia Smoyer,
JPD LREDA Administrator, by e-mailing gwa...@earthlink.net.
Members and professional staff from Philadelphia-Wilmington area
congregations will gather on May 10 for Kindling the Flame. This
growth-oriented event will include worship and workshops related to
“An Excellent Sunday Morning Experience.” Meet at the UU Church of
Delaware County in Media, PA, on May 10 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Go

line.
Events Beyond the JPD
Volunteers and professionals who work with UU students and young
adults are invited to a Young Adult and Campus Ministry (YACM)
Training event, June 12-15 at the UU Church of Washington Crossing in
Titusville, NJ. The full training is intended for professional staff
and expert YACM volunteers. The second half of the training will have
break-out groups appropriate for first-time volunteers. A sliding
scale registration fee ranges from $50 at the least expensive range
for one day or training to $150 at the most abundant range for the
full three days.
General Assembly is the annual meeting of the member congregations of
the Unitarian Universalist Association. Delegates make big decisions
on behalf of our Association, meet new friends, learn new skills in
workshops, worship with thousands of other UU’s, and bring home lots
of books from the UUA Bookstore. This year’s General Assembly will be
held June 25-29 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Go to http://www.uua.org/events/generalassembly/
for more information.
All UU Young Adults (age 18-35) are invited to a meeting of the
Continental UU Young Adult Network (C*UUYAN) June 24 & 25 in Fort
Lauderdale. Take part in forming the mission and vision of a renewed
continental UU Young Adult community. This meeting is scheduled
directly before General Assembly so that as many Young Adults as
possible may attend. Registration is free; congregations are
encouraged to cover the extra housing costs for the extended time in
UU community before GA. Visit http://connectuu.com/events.php?action=view&event_id=1158
for more information or to register.
Lay leaders who are beyond Young Adulthood but ready to get excited
about learning are invited to UU University. This year’s UUU theme is
“Ministry in the Borderlands” with Rev. Dr. Nick Carter, President of
Andover Newton Theological School. The program will cover diversity
both within the congregation and in the interfaith community. UU
University takes place directly before General Assembly, June 24 &
25. Visit http://www.uua.org/events/uuuniversity/index.shtml to learn
more.
Congregations in the JPD and our neighboring districts are invited to
send teams of professional staff and lay leaders to a weeklong,
intense, leadership development experience. This year’s UU Leadership
Team Institute (UULTI) will be held July 28-August 3 at Juniata
College in Huntingdon, PA. Visit http://uulti.org/ for more
information.
