A couple of years ago I had to replace a shroud and the only way I
could get a new one was by taking the old one off, taking it to West
Marine, having them send it off to their workshop to be duplicated.
The did a nice job but if possible, I'd rather just order one from a
place that has the exact JN-18 shroud measurements and can do it
without having to remove it.

Today, after fixing my launching line I discovered that my starboard
top shroud has one wire unwinding. I taped it so as to protect my crew
from serious injury. But I do realize that this must be replaced.

Does anyone know of a place that I can just call to order a
replacement?
THANKS!

Aps(annapolis performance sailing) in annapolis did mine they should have the measurements, but you will have to buy a new turn buckle..they reused my old ones when I did mine

C - I think my shroud has 2 broken wires, and it's been like that for
a couple of years now. So you'll probably be okay for a while - as
long as you keep tape on it. I would hesitate before ordering one
using measurements, because each boat has slightly different length
shrouds and both sides of your boat should be an identical matched
set. Even a 2 mm difference would force you to use different settings
on each of your turnbuckles if you want to keep the mast centered.

If you decide to wait, I'll probably replace mine later this summer,
so I'll have an extra one available. You're welcome to borrow it, so
you can send your good one in for copying. But then of course you'll
have broken wires and tape on both shrouds temporarily . . .

Thanks for the offer and suggestion.

I'll have to think how to proceed. APS has detailed rigging measuring
instructions and a 10 day turn around. They do not have Brian's shroud
measurements and told me that even if they did, it would not be wise
to rely on those for my boat. West Marine rigging has a 48 hour turn
around but prefer to have in hand the actual shroud to be replaced.

Given that I have only one broken strand (out of 19) I think I am not
taking too great of a risk by holding off. I might take it off and
send in before my next vacation.

THANKS again!

Having actually done this sort of thing for a living about 30 years
ago, I think there's a better solution than West Marine shipping
things off and waiting for mail to deliver new ones.

If (big if) there is a rigging shop in Pittsburgh, you should be able
to take one of your shrouds into the rigging shop and they can
fabricate a new one in about 20 minutes. The only reason for 20
instead of 5 minutes is the care that they will take in laying out
measurements. The actual construction of the shroud once the wire is
the right length will take no more than 2 minutes.

The one problem will be the availability of the specific end fittings
(turnbuckle on the lower end, T-fitting on the top). Every rigging
shop will have turnbuckles in stock, and almost every one will have a
T-fitting. "Almost". There's the rub, lad.

In Annapolis there are at least a couple of rigging shops in
Eastport. In Pittsburgh, there may be zero rigging shops. By
"rigging shop", I mean a mast builder, though I think in Eastport
there is one shop that does only rigging construction. I can't
remember how far it is from Pitt to, say, Erie, PA, but there is
likely a mast builder somewhere along the shores of Lake Erie. Yellow
Pages, Google, WhitePages, whatever, look for "mast builder" or
"sailboat rigging" with your area code as a field in the search.

Another, somewhat delayed solution: does anyone at SSA have their mast
down at the moment? Would you be willing to detach a shroud and take
it to the rigging shop next to APS and have one or more copies made?

Final note: by "shroud", I assume we're talking about the wire that
goes from the mast to the side of the boat. Not the Shroud of Turin.
That is a whole 'nother question.

I had 5-6 broken strand before I did mine at the season's end (I got a whole set on the theory that they were all teh same age and would have to be done at some time..I would suggest taping them so that they don't come loose and unwind at all.

Thanks for the comments, everyone!

I am thinking that with only one strand broken, I may be able to hold
off until the end of season. I wrapped lower end of the the shroud to
keep it all nicely together but left a couple of millimeters right by
the turnbuckle exposed so that I can tell if another strand fails.

All - All of our boats are 13-15 years old, I believe. There may be one or two built after the sad demise of JBW, but that's in the ball park. The rigging issue is somewhat subjective as to replacement. Some folks will "push the envelope" on replacement as it is expensive: +/ $1k worth. Having the rig come down could be catastrophic however, and I urge all fellow 18 sailors to err on the side of caution.
In Hawai'i we've had two fatalities due to rig failure on large charter catamarans in recent years. The conventional wisdom prior to this event was 1x19 rigging was good for 7-10 years. Some significant investigation and discussion with the folks who manufacture rigging revised that to 5-7 years, especially when you're in a salty, humid or acidic environment. Also on the 18 the headstay gets rolled up in the jib and is prone to corrosion. So if your a fresh water guy in Nevada or Arizona you might get ten safe years. Elsewhere not so likely.
Also, the older stainless fasteners have around a ten year life as well. If you have replaced any deck mounted hardware, chain plates, cam cleats or the like, they often shear rather than unscrew during disassembly.
I urge all of you to be safe, fishooks on the shrouds are a harbinger of failure.

These are great, fast, fun boats

Take good care of them

Aloha,

Steve-178
