This letter almost made me vomit my lunch out. What
an ass-kissing letter!

I don't know who give this Prof. Gu JiCheng authority
to stand for all our NE hunan fellows. Please kick me
out this group if he is still the leader of this
group.

Donation would be a good idea if the fund don't pass
through the government hands. There just too many
stories of corrupted officers.

Thanks,

Shuguang

Shuguang,

It is really rude to judge a person's effort this way. Prof. Gu is still our
elected leader for this community. If you have constructive opinions, please
feel free to voice them out. We are more than willing accept your practical
contributions, not sarcasm.

Best,

Dear All,

I was a member of the group. Even I moved back two years ago, I very much appreciate what the group have done for uniting people together.

I agree with Yi Min, it is professional to be constructive, or at least not judgemental. It would be great if the letter were acompanied with a fundraising, even though the Hunan TV has raised over 300 million.
Best luck in the new year.

Dear All,

Thanks for your emails. Shihe, great to hear from you. Your excellent performance 2 year ago was very impressive.

Our Org President Prof Gu did try to initiate the fund raising for Hunan before this year's new year party here. I thought it was a good idea. There are lots of channels to help our hometowns as well, I think all of us would find a way. If our Org could do something together, I am sure the constructive suggestions will reach.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Hi, Yimin:
Don't you think you are very judgemental too?

My e-mail might be rude, becuase such letter(kissing
ass of the government) really lost a human being's
dignity. It is an insult to me as a member of this
group(not sure if others agree). It made me really
angry.

I respect your choice of leadership. It is a shame for
me be under such leadership. Please remove me from
this group.

As usual, I will help the suffered people in my own
way. One thing for sure, it will stay away from the
government officers.

Happy new year to all!

Shuguang

Being a fellow Hunanese, I found the exchanged letters amusing and interesting.

The letter written by Prof. Gu  is a typical governmental letter and we should appreciate that Prof. Gu wrote that letter to express his own personal feeling of this unfortunate natural event. However, Shuguang was correct also, in my own mind, to point out that since this letter was written under the name of an organization, not a personal letter, and  since not every member appreciated reading letter that sounds like a typical CCTV's script, a political correct thing to do is to acquire consent of whatever the governing body of this organization has before sending any statements under the title of the organization. That is why an organization should have bylaws to determine whether it is purely social , political or both.

People of Hunan  always have reputation of being independent thinking, rebellious and stunbborn.Beng a Hunanese, I am proud of my fellow Hunanese's ability to raise and carry on such challenging and provoking conversation.

Sorry for picking this controversial topic again. Thank you Chengta for turning it into a formal discussion. This discussion might help us understand more about our organization (Hunan New England) and guide its future practices. You might have some questions in mind. The following answers might be helpful.

Q: What is Hunan New England and who are in charge

A: Initiated by Gu JiCheng and Wu Erxi at the end of 2005, the group is a purely social group for those Hunan fellows living in New England. The goal of this organization is to unite Hunan fellows, enrich their lifes, and strengthen their connection with Hunan province. The registered group members have reached 142 as of yesterday. Currently, a bunch of volunteers are helping running it. The current president and vice president are Gu Jicheng and Wu Erxi, respectively.

Q: Is this letter from Prof. Gu appropriate?

A: It is an important discussion but might be open-ended. It is important because its conclusion will decide whether Hunan New England should send out similar letters in the future. The letter has been reviewed by three volunteers before being distributed. Admittedly, not everyone will like the tone. But please ask youself this simple question:  is it worse than sending no consolation?

This group is expanding fast and it might be hard to reach a concensus for any issue. But this should not be an excuse of doing nothing. However we encourage different voices, but no scoff or fingerpointing.

If anyone are willing to help run the organization or have any thoughts, feel free to contact Yi Min, yimi...@gmail.com. Hunan New England hope all members can help build this community better.
