Is anybody familiar with a "対面式キッチン"? I see plenty of pictures of it on a Google image search, but don't know how to render this in English. At first I thought it was a kitchen with an "island" counter (allowing people to stand on both sides of the "counter" when preparing food, so as to be "face to face"), but this seems inconsistent with the pictures.
Some web sites seem to imply that this is a "kitchen as a family meeting place." I am considering going with "family kitchen," or "whole-family kitchen" or even "kitchen for the entire family," but I am wondering if there is a better term. (What I am translating, by the way, is a patent for a microwave oven used in such a kitchen, not marketing material, so I am not looking for a flashy way to describe the idea, just an accurate word for it...)
Thanks.
Warren

Hi Warren,
My wife suggested "open kitchen." You can google that and find many
similar-looking photos there.
