To: connected-commu...@googlegroups.com

East Gippsland Maker Space (http://www.egmakerspace.org/) One of our fellow Aussie Maker Spaces, I heard about them a while ago but had no idea they had secured an old hospital for their space, its enormous.

In other news, Hack a Day are running a series of articles on Hackerspaces and are asking for video tours, if someone has a decent camera we should do one.

Perhaps we should re-brand ourselves as a makerspace, with the
hackerspace being a subgroup of it? This might broaden our audience.

That's not a bad idea Damien. There has been a huge debate on the Linux
Australia mailing list as the current committee are looking into
changing the name as they feel that it no longer fits the organisation
which isn't just about Linux. Many people are against the name change
for a variety of reasons and it has been an emotional and heated debate.

Perhaps it's good to talk about this before the name HackerSpace
Adelaide becomes the group's identity and to avoid the pain that Linux
Australia are experiencing now.

Good point. We can still refer to ourselves as the hackerspace, and
can use that name for legal reasons too, but maybe we can change our
selling point to "we want to set up a makerspace of which the
Hackerspace will be part of". It might help others feel that we share
common goals in creating a space and are open to discussion.

Makerspace might be a nicer term of reference in some circles although I'd want stick with Hackerspace as our official name for a few reasons, not the least of which being that I don't feel the "maker" term has really proven its longevity yet.
