I recommend making a way to hide labels you don't use very often.
Currently you have to deal with a lot of clutter in your labels if you
don't want to lose the tags to your old messages.

The best Gmail lets you do now is add a "z" to the front of your
label. So "zCollege" will appear below "Book Club," "Family," and
"Work." But couldn't you let us hide "College" entirely?

Hi Craig,

My preference would be to allow grouping labels, and then being able
to re-order and collapse groups.

Would that also meet your needs?

If so, maybe you could add support in the thread I posted about it:

Thanks,

I want this feature too! (I actually posted this exact suggestion mere
hours ago!)

I hope it gets implemented.

But, as Peter says, grouping unused labels is a good idea I hadn't
thought of...so I guess that's the solution for now.

This would be very useful to me.

I'd like to add to this idea. I agree with the OP that having a way to
hide/show labels is really important as the number of labels
increases. I don't care for the grouped labels idea as much, but
hiding outdated labels is a high priority.
I also have another suggestion to make sure that hidden labels don't
accidentally hide new/unread messages. I would like for the hidden
label to reappear/unhide if there is a new unread msg to it (this
assumes that the label is automatically applied through a filter).
That way you wouldn't lose a new msg that went to an "archived/hidden"
label.

Other options could be:

1. Show the labels with unread messages at the top of the list.

2. Show the 10 most active labels (in terms of recent activity not
most messages).

3. Sort the label list by amount of recent activity.

I agree with stream as well; hiding labels would make them more
useful for me; i'm getting to the point where i'm creating quick
links so that I can collapse my labels;

I was about to post this as an idea myself. Sub-labels is also a good,
but separate idea. Hiding labels would be ideal and I like the idea
that if an unread message got moved to a label it would temporarily re-
appear.

I've wanted an option to hide labels for a while now, mainly because
there are some labels I don't use anymore, but I wouldn't like to
delete them.

The idea to hide the 'rarely used' labels is really nice. Also, it
would be nice if there were an option to hide labels manually (not
only the rarely used).

'slip' said something interesting, too, when he suggests that if there
is a new conversation and its labels is hide, it would automatically
unhide it. Maybe the 'automatically' part could be customizable.

I also agree and recommended it a few days ago. But, today I was
searching and found older posts, this one in particular. Probably all
of my ideas have been said before. Any way, hiding labels is very
essential as I have entire labels I probably won't care about seeing
for months and months and I have 33 labels, I think, so it's getting
to be a pain. I would probaby do more labels but it would be more of
a pain since they all show up.

Ok, I've done some search on the forum and I found (as expected) that
many people would love to have a "hide label" feature on Gmail.

I'll try to summarize some additional functions that were requested by
many users in this forum, and which would go along very well with the
"hide label" Labs feature:

* Re-order labels (currently, you can only order them in aphabetical
order)

* To allow grouping labels, and then being able to re-order and
collapse groups.

* Option to show by default only labels which have unread messages.
One link would expand to show all used labels. After this expansion,
Gmail would show a new link, which would expand to show all labels
(used and unused).

* Another suggestion to make sure that hidden labels don't
accidentally hide new/unread messages. I would like for the hidden
label to reappear/unhide if there is a new unread msg to it (this
assumes that the label is automatically applied through a filter).
That way you wouldn't lose a new msg that went to an "archived/hidden"
label.

The "hide label" feature has been requested and discussed many times
in this forum. A few examples are:

So, why does Google still refuse from adding this feature?

As the author of a GM script (http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/
4669) that used to work I would advocate a way to group and then hide
groups, though second string way would be like I was doing before hand
where you just rename your labels to some pattern ( I was using
x_NAME ).
