grouped labels

I currently have a workaround for grouping my labels, by prefixing
them with a certain character or two in order to group them.

For example...
I have "type" labels, for broadly categorising messages.
I have "id" labels, for specifically identifying certain websites.
I have "project" labels, for projects I run / belong to.
I have "topic" labels, for general topics.
(I have a few other misc labels also)

It would be helpful to be able to group these labels into those four
groups.

Grouping labels would default to them all being the same colour, to
avoid me having to select one when I add a new label to a group.

Groups should also be collapsable, and whether expanded or collapsed
saved between sessions
(I would generally always have id/topic groups collapsed, as they are
more searching-based, but type and project labels are directly
informative so I'd keep them always visible)

Thanks.

If you use Firefox (which I'd highly recommend if you don't), there's
a great add-on available: Better Gmail 2 (https://addons.mozilla.org/
en-US/firefox/addon/6076), which adds extra features, including the
ability to group labels in a folder-esque hierarchy system. Annoying
that it's not present on systems other than your own, but hopefully
more of these extra features will eventually be incorporated into the
actual Gmail system.

Hi browncoat,

I actually use Firefox for two things only:
1. Web development with Web Dev Toolbar and Firebug plugins.
2. Gmail and the Better Gmail plugin. :)

For regular browsing I much prefer using Opera and K-Meleon - both
superior browsers to Firefox.

I've just updated to the latest version of Better Gmail 2, but
enabling Folders4Gmail from the Sidebar tab doesn't seem to do much -
initially it was blocking Gmail from running but after disabling and
enabling a few times it now loads but I can't find any folder options
anywhere?
