Anxiously awaiting 3.5 support. With the speed and JS improvements of
FF3.5 combined with gears hopefully my web app experience will finally
be what it should.

That was 6 months ago. Now Firefox 3.5 final has been released and
Google has been caught sleeping behind the wheel.
All other major extensions I can think of managed to stay functional
during the Beta/RC stages.
Sigh. Hope to see an updated version of Gears soon, now that the
pressure is on.
Same here.. I refresh google gears's page every 10 minutes to check if
there is an update. Our main product is based on Google Gears, we do
really need google gears works with firefox 3.5 ASAP..
I managed to compile gears for firefox 3.5 under Linux. I have only
x86_64 system, thus xpi for i386 remains untested. x86_64 works
perfectly for me. Please report any problems.

Did Google even begin development of the Gears plugin for FF 3.5 prior
to the final version being released? This is so frustrating. How can
we depend on a technology that a company is pushing when they dont
even keep up with their own development of it?
C'mon Google!
Even Microsoft would do better than this by at least posting a "Beta"
or "developers" version of it.. A term which Google should be quite
familiar with.

The latest SVN (rev 3373) builds (0.5.25.0) works with Firefox 3.5. I
have it running on my Mac. They checked in the code in the pat 24
hours, so I assume a proper release should not be a day or so away.

Generally most software companies / providers are ahead of the game.
It is not like no one knew FF 3.5 was coming. Pretty standard practice
Google and if you are wanting to move your solutions into more
businesses you need to get up to speed.

First of all if Microsoft was doing this they would not be ahead of a spec, they would be years behind it. In fact they would likely wait until the spec was complete then come up with something parallel and incompatible.
Secondly, if you are so concerned check the svn version, build it and distribute. Don't forget this an open project lead by google not owned by google. Remember it's Gears, not Google Gears.

The norm seems to be google updates gears about 1 week after the new
firefox release. Gears is a pretty deep manipulation of the browser
and it seems like a substantial amount work to get to compatibility
with each new browser version. I wish google would maintain a beta
track gears extension with marginal compatibility with prerelease
browsers. It would make handleing all 4 major browsers much easier.

This is the wrong attitude to take. One of the biggest reasons for
having a release candidate push of software is to provide extension
developers a chance to test out their products in advance against a
stable product and fixed API so that the users can have things "just
work" at release.
If you at Google really want to make Gears an essential part of the
web, even small setbacks like this is going to cause people to sour at
your product, especially as you are also pushing a competitive browser
of your own now.
I hope you don't make this same mistake with 3.6 and onward. The web
is forgiving once or twice for a really good product -- which I
believe Gears truly is -- but can also turn very harsh very quickly.
I think the best thing to do here is to accept accountability for
having dropped the ball. Hopefully this will provide you with an
opportunity to begin development and support of mainstream browsers
(it is the #2 browser by marketshare) a little earlier. Then you wont
be put in the position where you are on defense while annoying your
supporters and users.
A simple "we are working on a new release and will be refreshing our
process for supporting new browsers" would not only have diffused the
situation, but likely brought praise.
Hiding behind a "we only support release versions" then not having a
version ready for release just loses credibility.
That is the way I see it, if you dont agree, that is ok.

Thanks Geza! I just loaded it into Firefox 3.5 and "downloaded" the
Admin of both my WordPress powered sites. Works like a charm and my
shared server heaved a sigh of relief. Ironically enough I was using
Chrome (latest Dev channel build) with the WP Admins up until now
which actually uses an even earlier version than Firefox 3.0.11 did
(0.5.21.0 vs 0.5.23.0). Go figure.
Many thanks for putting these out for 3.5 users ahead of time. Much
appreciated.
