I'm running Ubuntu 9.04. I just installed the new RC of Firefox 3.5.
However, the Gears plugin is disabled because it doe not support this
version. Are there any plans to support this new Firefox version? I
expected the plugin to work, because on the Google Gears website it is
stated that you need Firefox 1.5+.

I've been using Firefox betas from 3.1 to the newest 3.5 rc3 and Gears
has remained unsupported through all of them.
Incredibly frustrating. Excited for update.

I'm starting to think we may see a new version of the Google Apps
suite (Docs, Gmail, etc) that support Gears supporting HTML 5 rather
than a Gears release for a HTML 5 capable browser.
It would still be nice to get some official word from Google on what
the plan is here though.
We're working on pushing out a new Gears version that support FF 3.5.
We typically wait until the official "gold" release of Firefox is pushed, because otherwise, we keep having to do new builds everytime a new RC is pushed.

I just upgraded to the official Firefox 3.5, and Google Gears was
disabled. Can you imagine of upgrading to Firefox 3.5 disabled Flash?
Not a good step, Google.

Or imagine if Google put out a new version of Chrome and Gears didn't
work... Sounds to me like Google is trying to do what it can to push
users to Chrome. The fact that they claim they'd have to do an update
for ever RC is ridiculous, the whole point of an RC's is that its
practically feature complete and its to check for last minute bugs. I
cant picture each RC being so different that they'd have to do some
major code re-writing.

The point is they would have to do a new build for each version, not a
new rebuild, ie. from scratch. This avoids the hassle of having to
track build numbers and versions for each build and version of
FireFox, or any other browser. Even a simple bug fix is another
version that needs to be kept track of. As much as I would have loved
to see gears working for each step of the process I do uderstand their
explaination.

If you don't bother testing for RC builds then how will you get any
user feedback if there are problems. Plus the final release of
Firefox 3.5 is out now and Gears does not work.

Well Firefox 3.5 has now gone gold and been released, the browsers on
all my computers have been updated and all of them have now disabled
Google Gears :-(
Thanks for a great product :-)

Same here. I now have problem accessing my online Trouble Ticket
System because Google Gears isn't supported. I had to install Safari
to get it to work! Not very good google especially when this is a full
version of 3.5 not a RC. Can someone respond to this at least?

Firefox 3.5 is hitting the mirrors as we speak (http://www.mozilla.org/ mirrors.html) and should appear on http://firefox.com/ in the coming
hours - I'm posting this from it!
I've got some Gears weirdness - Gmail detects Gears (which comes up in
Tools->Add-ons as version 0.5.21.0 of "Gears for Safari") but then
tells me that "This page does not have permission to use Gears." and
that I should "Remove https://mail.google.com from the list of denied
sites". The right hand side of http://gears.google.com/ is blank (but
works as expected in Safari 4).
Anyway, is Gears even necessary any more? What does it give me over
native HTML 5 functionality?
