I have personally confirmed that none of the academics named on the SCIS website (http://www.scis-calibrate.org/) wish to have anything to do with it. Neither does the University of Sussex. The "International Advisory Board", the webpage now says, is to be "phased out as current members retire". This is somewhat disingenuous: they are not retiring, but resigning, and asking for their names to be removed.

This is not to say that none of the projects with which Mr Kofmel, qua SCIS, has been associated have any merit, but there is some way to go before I can accept any further Calls for Papers or the like from SCIS (taht is, Mr Kofmel) onto this list.

Any discussion of this should be offlist or on chora. Please abide by this rule!

Stephen Clark

In an important update, it appears that the University may have taken
the "next steps" they were quoted as "considering" in the THES article
about Mr. Kofmel and his SCIS. According to today's Argus newspaper
"It is understood he has since been suspended by the University of
Sussex"

Professor Clark and PHILOS-L is again referenced and we are profoundly
grateful to him for taking the necessary steps to protect this list
from any potential issues.

Dear List,

Some of you may have read in the press last week, that Erich Kofmel
failed to answer bail at Sussex Police on 9th September 2008 in
connection with a series of major frauds (see links to press sources
and reprints at
http://erichkofmelinfo.googlepages.com/?ref=BAILMISSL). Failure to
answer bail is in itself a serious offence, and as such, he is now
essentially "on the run". We understand that the French police are
also actively searching for Mr. Kofmel in connection with a series of
unrelated offences.

Many people on this list will have had contact with Mr. Kofmel. If you
know of Mr. Kofmel's current whereabouts we would be grateful if you
could contact Sussex Police and quote Crime Reference CC1/14327/07 or

Dear List,

Following on from Stephen Clark's post about misleading information on
the SCIS websites, we are delighted to report that the company that
hosts Mr. Kofmel's various websites (EU Hosts) have suspended and
domain locked all 10 of the misleading sites concerned
(www.scis-calibrate.org , www.scis-calibrate.com ,
www.scis-technology.com , www.scis-technology.org,
www.erichkofmel.org , www.erichkofmel.com , www.political-theology.com
, www.political-theology.org , www.politische-theologie.com ,
www.politische-theologie.org) and all associated email accounts.

In a statement, Mr. Barry Featherstone (the owner of EUHOSTS)
confirmed "As an ethical hosting company, we would not knowingly or
willingly have illegal, fraudulent or misleading information hosted by
any of our clients, and we would expect the client to comply with our
terms and conditions. We do not however police our clients websites."

We hope that this brings some closure to the University of Sussex and
the academics concerned. Following Mr. Kofmel's failure to answer bail
at Sussex Police on 8th September, Mr. Kofmel remains "wanted" by both
the UK and French police in relation to a number of major frauds. If
you know of Mr. Kofmel's whereabouts contact Sussex Police and quote
reference CC1/14327/07

For more information about the Erich Kofmel frauds and scams, or to
read a cached version of the SCIS website before it was suspended,
