Hi all,
Two NYC guys have an idea to start a Django-NYC group. We've actually
been meeting at our favorite NYC coffee spots (Grey Dog Cafe) and
eateries (Totally Baked - the eatery, not the "state of mind") over
the last couple weeks discussing various ideas for the group.
So, it's now been almost one month to the day that we first posted on
the django-nyc group page:
http://groups.google.com/group/django-nyc
Then we just saw the London blokes published a post that they too are
starting a Django group, and beyond giving us the kick in the arse we
needed, they also pretty much nailed it on the head in regards to what
we're looking to accomplish with the group. (

Simply, we want to create the group to meet good people who share
interest in django and web application architecture, design, and
development.
The meetings topics will be open to discussion - but we'd like to
focus on presentation, tutorials, code review, open forums, and
hopefully guest speakers. For example, one idea is a django-nyc group
django project using Mercurial for source control, etc. Ideally, that
would then would lead to a presentation on Mercurial from one of the
members, etc. Another conversation may lead to integrating a reusable
app, etc. So you get the idea.
And of course we'd like to enjoy a few pints and some good eats along
the way.
Below are some additional details about the Mission of the group
(which I touched upon above) and the two "founders" of the django-nyc
google group. But we need people (and we're looking at places as
well). So please post below or over on the django-nyc google group
page and we'll provide feedback and get the ball rolling.
Mission:
To create a community for those interested in django to meet, share
ideas, create, learn, and have a good time. The focus will be django
and web application design and development. Python will obviously be
an underlining theme, but there are specific python groups focused on
python solely and that's not us. We want to give django the attention
it deserves.
People behind it:
My name is Kevin. I have 8 years of web/dev experience and I've
contributed to 2 open source .net/c# projects in the past but recently
made the switch over to python and django for my new project. So I'm a
django noob with lots to learn, but I've also learned a few things
along the way so far which I hope to bring to the group. I'm the VP of
Technology for a small startup here in NYC. We can talk about that and
more if you come to the meet up ;)
Loren Davie - Loren's been working in the web and software since the
mid-nineties and has been around for most of the ups and downs of the
dot-com world. He originally was a Java guy but fell in love with
Python a few years ago. When Django came along the romance was
sealed. These days he's the Director of Technology at a web agency
here in New York.
