- Toronto Intl Open Data Hackathon Dec 3, 2011 ??? [2 Updates]
jkonga <jko...@sympatico.ca> Nov 28 04:34AM -0800
Is it me or are we missing this event in Toronto - I see a reference
to the RHoK http://www.rhok.org/event/toronto-canada but nothing about
the Intl Hackathon event. Last year we had a joint event co-chaired
by Heather Leson and Mark Kuznicki. What's happening this year ... as
in next weekend?

Hi there,
I'm hosting Random Hacks of Kindness and we're also hacking for Open
Data Hackathon Day on December 3rd and 4th. The City of Toronto has
put forth a
couple of scenarios, but it would be great to have more Open DataTO
participants.
Still looking for a couple of volunteers to make this weekend happen
so if you're interested, please email me at melani...@gmail.com.
Here is the relevant information:
Toronto is Hacking for Humanity and Open Data on December 3 and 4th.
Join us for a weekend long codethon and compete for the best prize for
a completed hack!
Our fourth global Random Hacks of Kindness event will bring big
change. As announced at our last global event in June, RHoK has
broadened its scope beyond its origins in Disaster Risk Management
(DRM) to include all development sectors. The global water community
came together for a Water Hackathon in 10 cities this October, and
efforts to hack autism with touch technology are already underway.
We're excited to announce that Toronto is partnering with Open Data
Hackathon Day to hack on December 3 & 4th. The Hackathon is pleased to
welcome the University of Toronto, Commons11, The Baitshop, CSI and
Nokia as sponsors and community partners.
The Toronto and Montreal communities have answered to a call for
developers, subject matter experts and volunteers to come together for
a weekend of problem solving, idea hacking and innovation. All in the
name of social change, Random Hacks of Kindness has evolved into a
community of people around the world committed to making change
through collaboration.
Toronto will hack on problems from the Toronto Parks and Recreation,
Toronto Cycling Community, WaterVoices and more will be added in the
lead up to the event.
Schedule:
Reception:
Thursday December 1st: 6pm-8pm No One Writes to the Colonel.
Join us on Thursday night where we will introduce the scenarios we
will be hacking and talk a bit about the process of a hackathon. Great
for first timers and experienced hackers alike!
Main Event: CSI Annex Main Floor 720 Bathurst, Toronto (Nearest
Subway, Bathurst Station- 5 minute walk south)
Saturday December 3. 2011
Registration 9:00 - 10:00am

Hi Momoko and everyone!
Sorry I didn't get your email last week. Definitely need some help with organizing. This is where we are in terms of needs.
The venue is booked at CSI Annex, we have the first floor and will have it set up into tables scattered for teams. They have an AV/sound system and a full kitchen. We have t-shirts ordered and a media coverage sponsor. We still are in need of a food sponsor and prizes, we have a limited budget so if you can think of any sponsors it would be most helpful. We'll need some volunteers for set up the night before.
The projects that we have to hack on are:
Toronto Bike Reporting App (Claire Bure)
Toronto Parks (Ruthanne)
Toronto Accessibility (Lorene)
WaterVoices (Stephen Sauder)
Canadian Red Cross Scenario is pending.
We have 26 developers signed up, but expect more signups up until friday.
Cheers,
Melanie

This is great - exactly what I was hoping for when I asked the
question !!! I'm not a coder but hope to help as a SME on municipal
government (past life) and I'd love to resurrect the Budget Navigator
project from last year's hackathon - any coders interested in a budget
app? Melanie, I'll email you to see how I can assist.
Cheers Jury ... an Open Data advocate since the '90s :-)

Cool, I'll be working on WaterVoices with Stephen from Montreal. What's the bike reporting app? (reporting stolen bicycles?)
Michael
http://faganm.com/
http://wastenothing.ca/ - Let's Waste Nothing
The isthisbikestolen.com project from last year has been live since
RHoK 2010. In fact, this month the Toronto Cyclists Union (together
with the Toronto Police) have launched a comprehensive anti-bike theft
campaign featuring isthisbikestolen.com at http://bikeunion.to/theft.
(If you have a bike, register it now! Go to https://webapp1.torontopolice.on.ca/BicycleRegistry/
or see bikeunion.to/theft for more details).
Bike data would be a great candidate for open data lobbying. We've
asked for the City's bike collision and injury data for a while now,
but other than the PDFs linked by Reham it still hasn't been made
public. Yes, you can extract the data from the PDFs, so it doesn't
really make sense to keep this data hidden away for privacy reasons.
Bike theft data also exists - the Toronto Police maintain the data
internally. We have asked for the data, but again it has not been
made public.
Both bike accidents and bike theft should be reported to the Toronto
Police. This summer the TPS just launched an online reporting tool
(http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/recordsmanagement/crimereporting.php)
that can be used to report thefts under $5000, as well as non-injury
collisions or other traffic incidents (road rage, drunk driving,
etc). The reports go directly to the Toronto Police database. The
reporting system could really use a mobile-accessible version!
Yes, I'll be at RHoK this year. Look forward to meeting everyone!
Cheers,
John
