Your welcome Scott, I hope it helps everybody out.  Can't thank you enough for how you always bail us out. At least in this forum we actually share information!

Thank you Dennis. Hope to repay the favor. Do you use pc3000 for this as well?

Your welcome! Unfortunately, the learning curve on the PC3000 was too long and I was impatient, so I went with the Atola which can do this as well. From what Russell at YEC told me, by the end of the year the Atola will be able to do everything that the PC3000 can. Scott can probably comment on the truth behind that.

Thank you for answering, Dennis. How's Atola doing? When did you get
it? Is it capable of doing anything, except removing passwords? I
"bought" one a year ago, went for a seminar and got so scared, that
returned it right there and then. I don't want to take up your time on
this discussion, so just one sentence would be great. You've already
done a lot.

I have heard from Dmitry that I should be getting a demo unit for Atola to use in the class.  In my test last year from one Sam let me use, it was not quite up to par.  It has been a year though, so I am ready to look at the unit again and see what improvements were done. I would find it hard to believe it is a complete replacement for the PC3000. The PC3000 is a very old and mature product, but I certainly see the point of having something simpler to use.

Thank you,

Hi again,

To be honest, I believe you made the right decision to return it at the time.  I purchased the Atola knowing that it trailed behind the PC3000 by quite a bit but believed that they were aggressively trying to get it up to speed. Russell from YEC said that they will have the Atola able to load loader files (SA modules) by the end of the year. The Atola is slowly building on the number of drives it can support and I like how quickly it can diagnose a problem. It's been pretty accurate. Hope that helps!

Thanks to Dennis' instructions I got the Seagate drive working last week.

I did want to point out something to the group that may be important to using this process.  I ordered the cable recommended by Dennis (actually ordered 2 "just in case"), and used his recommended driver which installed perfectly.  I pulled only the orange and yellow wires from the connector.  I left the other wires in the connector so they wouldn't short.  I put some heat shrink around the orange connector and more heat shrink around the yellow connector to keep them from touching each other while connected to the drive.  When spinning up the drive (I "played" with a known good drive first), I was getting some inconsistent results. About 40% of the lines of output would have some scrambled / missing text on them.  I tried the other cable with the same results.  I then tried another drive, tried PuTTY instead of HyperTerminal, tried a different USB port and tried a whole different computer with intermittent scrambled text in each scenario.  Discussing the issue with one of my electrical engineers, he said that serial communications needs a constant for accurate communication.  He looked at the drive and cable and said that using the 3rd pin on the drive (ground) to the black wire in the serial cable should solve my problems.  I then pulled the black cable from the connector, heat shrinked it, connected it to the next connector on the drive, and now the communication is solid and reliable every time.

So basically using Dennis' method works great, but I would highly recommend adding the black cable to the hard drive ground connection.  If one portion of one command doesn't get passed to the hard drive correctly, it could have a significant negative impact on the hard drive.

Hi Gary,

Thank you for sending the update to the group, I had received your message but this is the first chance I have sat down after the weekend.  I had actually come across documentation that mentioned needing the ground cable connected and others that said it was not necessary. It never mentioned why it would be needed or what communication errors might show without it. Now we know! It certainly won't hurt to just add the black wire in the future.

I'll update the documentation to include this...

Thank you!
Dennis

From more research, it sounds like you may not need the ground if you power the Seagate hard drive from the same power supply that is powering the computer running the serial connection.  I was using a separate SATA power supply with an on/off switch that came with a USB to SATA adapter which could be why I saw intermittent issues.  But using the ground won't hurt in either case.

Thanks again for your very helpful document, Dennis!
