iViewer for Android - Beta Release

Hey Everyone,

The moment a LOT of you have been waiting for - iViewer for Android has reached public beta!

This is the first public beta of iViewer for Android. As a beta product, it is not considered release quality and you SHOULD NOT deploy it at customer sites.

This beta runs on Android devices running Android OS version 2.3 and up. It has been tested on few Android devices running 2.3.x and 3.x.

just wanted to make a note that if you have DroidViewer installed from
the previous beta you must uninstall it first as iViewer will just not
install with it still in system even though they are different app
names. I tried and had to uninstall the previous one first...

Also I had to submit a report as when i submitted my email in the app
and clicked submit after it did this it crashed and gave me the report
feature to send in which is what i did. the report sent fine as i got
the automated email back showing my application.

I assume if I have multiple devices I can install it on those and use
the same email or must I create a different email for each device I
want to test on? have EVO3D, EVO4G, and KindleFire I'd like to test
this on...

btw jw why the decision to use iViewer for the name instead of
DroidViewer or something else non iPhone related?

The name is not definitive, we're using it to stay in sync with the iOS version.

It's true that there may be a conflict with the previous version, although these are two very different applications (the new version is a complete rewrite as the previous one was not satisfying our long-term requirements).

Some devices may exhibit crashes right at startup, it's often some trivial issue that will be solved in the next build, due out very quickly now. We're collecting crash reports from a variety of devices which gives us a good overview of the landscape.

According to the document were to submit everything on github issue
wise correct? Or should we first check here before reporting there?

Have an issue where it doesn't seem any images are being loaded on the
device. all I see is text for buttons and such. Even tried just doing
a very basic from scratch layout with the new guiDesigner after having
the issue using the previous made templates with the DroidViewer Beta
and wanted to rule out them being the problem.

I also noticed the "reload GUI" doesn't really re-sync with the
guidesigner when you do it, instead it just refreshes the already
loaded gui basically. The only way to reload the gui is to go back to
the server address and change it there and thatll trigger it. And
still doing this I can't get any images to load on the device just
text from buttons.

What I was trying to do and the reason for reloading it, is im trying
to get the http commands set up for DIRECTV box control. I know the
TCP ones work fine but I haven't been able to get HTTP ones to
function so far at all. I tested them in the browser and they work
fine.

Example:
HTTP command: 192.168.1.2:8080/remote/processKey?key=menu
TCP command: GET /remote/processKey?key=menu HTTP/1.1\x0D\x0AHOST:
192.168.1.2:8080\x0D\x0A\x0D\x0A

The system properties for the HTTP one are the exact same as the ones
for TCP with the exception of "HTTP" being selected as the protocol. I
even tried changing the Heartbeat mode from "Replay" to the others and
still couldn't get it to work with HTTP command...Again putting this
in the browser address to test shows it functions fine.

I remember HTTP wasn't working in the Droidviewer beta now that I
recall, is that still the case?

Please open a new bug on GitHub, and attach a test GUI you are having issues

with. The issue with loading your images may very well come from a problem

accessing the assets subfolder, we'd like to check the exact configuration you

are using.

Reload GUI is known to work, but again there may be an issue specific to your

GUI configuration that we have not seen during internal testing.

Also, forget everything you assumed with the previous droidViewer beta, as the

new beta really is a new application (complete rewrite). Please open a separate

bug for HTTP type systems, this system type was tested as working but there

may be an issue that escaped testing -- we'll figure this out with your test GUI.

Tested it with a Samsung smartphone and worked right away. Just the resolution is the only 'problem'.

The tested project was made for an iPhone and didn't fit the screen of the Samsung.

I submitted the bugs and ended up putting links to get the files off
my dropbox since I saw nowhere to attach the files on github issue
report.

I also mistakenly seem to of NOT attached the 2 issue reports to the
milestone nor put tag's on them. Though going back through it, it
doesn't seem to even of been an option for me to do less I missed it
somehow...

I recovered my gitthub user, and next issue will post here.

For this.

The Bticino / Legrand commands connections hase the following step

1) Client start with x startup command
2) Server respond ack
3) Client send the command for light on (e.g.)
....
if the server don't receive others whitin 30 seconds close connection.

For redue all, normally my iOs gui restart the 1) 2) 3) step.

I solved with a setinterval function that send a status command every
25 seconds.

Ok I see so to make things clear, what you're seeing is that failing any data
being sent over the wire, there is a 30 second timeout after which you see
the connection automatically close?

If that's the case, think I know where this comes from. Will be solved in next
beta.

Any plans to make Android devices auto resize to fit the screen?

Or is this a change that would have to be done with the gui designer
or not possible b/c the size of the images and such that are loaded
are set in the gui designer?

Yes we have plans to provide autoscaling, don't think we can avoid it due to the wide variety of Android device screen sizes out there. Although for integrators, we would highly recommend standardizing on the hardware platform of your choice to avoid any inconsistencies in design that could result from a machine- scaled GUI. Also think about JavaScript code that manipulates screen locations, even though we can scale coordinates both ways, rounding errors could introduce minor differences breaking the pixel-perfect alignments in you GUIs.

So ther is , or will be , a way to upgrade the framework to last
build , maybe more fast / bug free ?

jQuery is only used in iViewer by the Remote Debugging interface. When you run your code on the device,
there is nothing else than your code loaded by iViewer. The version of jQuery that we use should be of
no concern no you, especially as we encapsulate it all in a private property of the CF variable / namespace.

Don't use our jQuery in your scripts, they will break when running standalone on the device. If you need
jQuery, include it in your JavaScript, there should be no conflict with the version we are using.

Have you read through the google doc link? There's a step by step information on how to apply for the beta license in it. Basically you'll need to apply for an account at the CF website, install the iViewer and launch it - the first launch will ask you to enter the email info that you've registered to apply for the beta license.

Hello, .. I've tested the latest  android version of iviewer but when I load my gui designer control software to an android system, I-Itach Hardware doesn't react. When I transfer the same program to an iphone, it works immideatly.

I am currently testing my application KNX. It works very well. But i want to report only a few little things.

- The Page timer  ignored the value in "repead Count" (eg, a value of 1 always run)

- In the "onGUISuspended" it is no longer possible to send an IP-Telegram

Thinking about buying cf.

Just need to clear up a couple of thing first. i have access to all crestron software i can make sense of about 30% of the programmig . but i'm not into writing programes.

i have also tried homeseer and iridium mobile.

on the trial version of cf there doesn't seem to be a lot to it compared to those i've mentioned above.

1. does cf have swipe like ipad.

2. which is easier to progrme cf or crestron at the end of the day i just want to be able to grag and drop programes.

3. i am thinking  about buying crestron mp2e or a global gc-10012 which one is better

Ok so build 136 is up. Release Candidate will be pushed later this week, so we can release the final version sometime next week.

iViewer now support automatic GUI scaling so that the GUI you makes scales to the size of the device screen. This will help simplify making generic GUIs.

GUI scaling sounds like a great feature. Can you elaborate on that? Does it preserve aspect ratio? Is it fully automatic or does it included layout managers?

It's fully automatic and preserves ratio. It scales the GUI components, the images, font sizes etc (this is not a zooming of pixels from the GUI defined size). From a code standpoint, all of your JS still handles coordinates at the sizes defined in your GUI. We perform automatic upscale / downscale for you on the fly.

There is no layout manager - we pondered the idea, but layout management is very tricky to get right, and to manipulate.

It's definitely a large step towards running the same GUI also on Android. It's although not fully clear to me how it will feel like since the form factors are quite different, 4:3 on iPad and 16:9 or 16:10 on android. That will give us quite large black borders if using the gui developed for iPad directly on an Android unit. Is the automatic scaling more thought for handling Android units with different resolutions, i.e. the form factor do not differ that much?

Yes, layout managers are tricky and they require quite a lot of work to get something nicely looking if using more complex managers. I guess that I'm mainly after a 'glue' effect where on define the areas between object that should stretch if needed, this to avoid black borders when the the form factor changes.

Black borders are fine, really. It's a small tradeoff for not having to customize the GUI to each precise screen size.

We stretch the GUI proportionally as much as possible so as to fill up either dimension of the screen. We also scale the GUI down if the device has a lower resolution than the one intended for the GUI. In the end, you get a GUI that can run on any device (provided that there is not too much variation in the pixel count, of course - otherwise it may look bad or be unusable if too small).

In short, just make one GUI for phones and one for tablets. Most devices on the market today will gracefully use either one.
