I would be very interested in Moodle training, and also in the potential of VLES. Another area of interest for me is the planning and promotion of Moodle and/or VLEs across an number of schools and education centres, with a focus on the best educational outcomes for pupils.

A propos the recent (very interesting) conversation about Moodle in
schools...
As a TPN, part of our remit is to look at what CPD we can provide for
our members and colleagues. Our Annual Conference, CESI Meets and
occassional training days (eg our recent Scratch Saturdays) cover many
of these needs on an ongoing basis.
In this light, could I hop a ball and ask: how many CESI listers would
be interested in some training on Moodle?
All we need to know at this stage is whether there's a critical mass
interested - we can take the planning from there if necessary.

love to learn more about it e.g. how to add interactive tools and how to
customise the interface to make it more attractive for young children.

I'd be interested too. Went to a course last year but it was extremely
technical and I (like a bold student) tuned off and got v little from
the course. This had never happened to me before or since so would
like to give a user-friendly course a go.

I see that there's an amount of interest in moodle and wondered if teachers
who are using it or similar technologies at primary school level could meet,
in the company of moodle / google / vle / mle experts - technological and
pedagogical, and share what they are doing, discuss the challenges and
receive guidance and training on the way forward. I don't ask for much, do

It’s a substantial and influential report based on a meta-analysis of research
literature from over 1000 studies between 1996 to July 2008.
The abstract is below:
A systematic search of the research literature from 1996 through July 2008
identified more than a thousand empirical studies of online learning. Analysts
screened these studies to find those that (a) contrasted an online to a
face-to-face condition, (b) measured student learning outcomes, (c) used a
rigorous research design, and (d) provided adequate information to calculate an
effect size. As a result of this screening, 51 independent effects were
identified that could be subjected to meta-analysis. The meta-analysis found
that, on average, students in online learning conditions performed better than
those receiving face-to-face instruction. The difference between student
outcomes for online and face-to-face classes -- measured as the difference
between treatment and control means, divided by the pooled standard deviation
-- was larger in those studies contrasting conditions that blended elements of
online and face-to-face instruction with conditions taught entirely
face-to-face. Analysts noted that these blended conditions often included
additional learning time and instructional elements not received by students in
control conditions. This finding suggests that the positive effects associated
with blended learning should not be attributed to the media, per se. An
unexpected finding was the small number of rigorous published studies contrasting
online and face-to-face learning conditions for K-12 students. In light of this
small corpus, caution is required in generalizing to the K-12 population
because the results are derived for the most part from studies in other
settings (e.g., medical training, higher education).

Hi Pádraig,
You can download moodle from moodle.org in a few different forms.
1. You can download the moodle source files and build it using your own
webserver - hosted or local.
2. You can download moodle in a package - This has everything you need, the
moodle source code along with everything to run a web server (PHP, MySql, Apache).
This one i would recommend to run moodle internally from a PC, etc if you are
looking to set one up quickly and evaluate it. In college i did this when i was
playing with sloodle - Second life and Moodle.
Personally i prefer to build moodle using a custom web server with Linux and
the like - you can customise everything to exactly what you want, however it
takes a little extra how and patience!
The nice thing about having a company like Blacknight host your moodle is, with
one click you can install moodle and its up and running - All that needs to be
done then is setup your users and courses - you can also integrate this into
your school facilities management system to do all this for you.

use wikis). I have just completed an online NCTE course - Developing E-Learning
in your School. I was really impressed with how Moodle was used to present this
course in a very engaging and attractive manner. I believe Moodle has great
potential but my colleagues and I need training to exploit this.
By the way, I would be interested in attending inservice courses in Moodle but
haven't come across any recently.

I have to disagree with this. Bandwidth issues on a primarily text-
based sites are insignificant. And doesn't your company recommend the
use of a proxy in schools? I don't think that's a consideration at
all.
The extra expense of purchasing a server, or if the school already has
a server with the spare capacity then the expense of configuring IIS
alone, is way beyond the €40/year cost for shared hosting with the
main providers. I assume most schools who would be considering a VLE
would already have a website, so there'll generally be no additional
cost, in that regard.
Using external hosting also allows students to access Moodle from
home, whereas the default settings for the NCTE firewall block
incoming connections (to the best of my knowledge). Any decent hosting
provider will perform regular backups and there's nothing in that
setup preventing a school from performing additional ones themselves.

I think if money is to be put into Moodle, getting a graphic designer
to make its style child-friendly and consistent with the school's
homepage would be money well spent. The Google Apps Single Sign On
(SSO) module should also be installed for schools already providing
students with individual PC/email accounts. And training, of course.
Unfortunately, I'm not working in any schools that are using VLEs but
I'm certainly going to encourage their use this year.

Most web hosting companies do these one click installs.
If not, the moodle install guides are very easy to follow.
Even by doing it the hard way you can have a moodle system up
in less than an hour.
