connecting water heater to Yanmar 3 cylinder engine

I  have  all  the  plumbing  done  and  now  need  to  do  the  final  connection  from the  engine  to  the  water  heater.  SO- 

  what  fittings  will I need  at  the  engine?

Am I right  in assuming I  take  the  hose from  the  engine where  it  then  goes  to  the  elbow  and  run  that  to the  water  heater and then from water  heater  back  to  the elbow???

         If your diesel is fresh water cooled you want to add the heater inline with the afore mentioned valves to the fresh water loop. If it's raw water cooled the heater will not last very long pumping salt water through it, but at that point if you don't have any other place on the motor that you can tap into you don't want to isolate the cooling water from the exhaust as you can do a lot of damage. I've seen diverter (y) valves that would allow the water to go to one point or the other but would still worry about heater longevity. Also with raw I would want a real good strainer in line with the heater as the passages are small and you'd be dealing with scale build up as it is.
