Hey everyone,
I started a complete overhaul of a 22 caravel I just purchased a couple months back and I have a few questions ...

1st- does any have a picture of the connection between the mast and boom

2nd- does anyone have a picture and hopefully dimensions of the spreaders

3rd- can anyone upload a picture of your plumbing setup? I am looking to have a small holding tank and the option to discharge outside the 3 mile zone.

4th- setup for the galley sink. Does anyone else just drain directly to a seacock? Would it be fine to let it drain to the Bilge?

And finally, when I dropped the rudder there was a wierd brass piece wrapped around it ... What is it? What is its function? And if I need a replacement how do I go about getting it?

Thank you so much everyone and I appreciate any help!

I don’t know the Caravel, but draining a sink into the bilge is a bad idea. Think of bacteria, food bits, dirt, etc., ending up down there. It will stink to the high heavens.

Also, with the head, the easiest way is to empty everything into the holding tank, then place a pump (manual or electric macerator) in the hose leading from the tank to the seacock.

I have a more complicated system. The hose from the bowl goes through a hand-operated pump. Place a Y valve in the hose leading from the pump. One hose goes to the holding tank, the other to the seacock.

The seacock has a T fitting connected to its hose that allows both the holding tank and the head to empty into it. The drain hose from the holding tank has to have its own pump, unless the tank is up high and can empty through gravity.

Spend a few extra dollars and get the white sanitary hose. Your significant other will appreciate not smelling sewage in the cabin.

Good luck on the rebuild project.

Thanks Jack, would that T fitting set up work with a manual hand pump instead of eletric?

Sure. You just need something that will move the waste from the tank to the seacock. On my old boat, I think it was a Whale pump. My electric macerator pump is a luxury items a P.O. installed.

Why don't you just use a port-a-potti, generally there's no requirement to have a head on a boat that size. Definitely don't discharge your sink water into the bilge. James, Miss B Haven, Bristol 24

I agree that on the boat that size is so much easier!

The previous owner was in the beginning phases of a complete overhaul with the intention of some coastal travel. So to my luck came with a brand new head, manual hand pump, and a 6 gallon holding tank not installed (it also had the waste pump out on deck and vent installed)  with a small intake seacock and a larger discharge one (bronze - have seen better days) ... So I figured I would go with that setup. A couple new thru hulls, seacocks, and hose. It's on the hard (my backyard lol) so I have the time to do a nice install.

Well in that case........ I'd go for it too. It's all part of the adventure isn't it!
