Hi everyone, does any one know how many Mattos family's there were in Sao Jorge in the late 1800's ?  I know my Great Grandmother was Mattos and was from there but don't know any more than that so If there were only a few that would narrow my search down a little bit. Also what is the pronunciation I was told that it sounded like Mutuse or something similar.

Dan,

Probably a lot of Mattos families would be my guess.

I would say that Mateus is closer to your Mutuse.  I think Mattos is more like MAH-tosh.

Dan I would bet to venture not very many.  What was you Great Grandmother's name?  I believe you are correct on the pronunciation....Good luck on your searching and maybe we'll find a connection down the road.  Robin Borba Besotes

Dan,

I've seen quite a few Matos/Mattos families while searching the Sao Jorge records.

Hi Robin, I have been told that her maiden name was Rosa Mattos but her father was a Bettencourt and that she was from likely Sao Jorge. She died as Rosa Gregorio but her husband was Joseph Frequez and I know she never remarried but I cant figure out if she was born a Mattos and married a Frequez how her legal name was Gregorio.

Nancy Jean Baptista; I'm a newbe, but I see you are researching Sao Jorge name of da Silveira. Have you run across the last name of
Terra da Silveira? probable in the Norte Grande area.

Hi ; Nancy Jean. Thank you for keeping your eye open for the name of Terra da Silveria in Norte Grande. Also in my background are Mattos in the Petaluma California area. At this time I do not know where the connection is, but I am working on it. Again I thank you.

I'm sorry for butting in but I had Mattos from Petaluma, CA. area  My aunt U. G. (Goulart) Mattos.  She was married to Jose Mattos.  Children were Ida, Mary, Helen and Joseph.  All are deceased, I think but Mary may still be living.  Their home was near the downtown area of Petaluma.  Yes my aunt and Jose were from Calheta, Sao Jorge.  Ida married and lived in  Modesto with her family.  Joseph married and lived somewhere in Oregon.  He committed suicide.  The other two daughters never married.

Don't know if this will help any of you or not but while searching other records, I found the following:

Manuel Mattos Bettencourt from Sao Jorge arrived April 13, 1903 NY on the Dona Maria going to his father Antonio Mattos Bettencourt, San Francisco.
On same ship Manuel Mattos Silveira

John Mattos Bettencourt 26, from Rebeira Seca, Sao Jorge sailing from Ponta Delgada arrived July 1901 NY  on the America.  Father is Jose Mattos Bettencourt.
On same ship, Mel Agostinho Mattos 16, father Agostinho Silveira Mattos, Faja de Caldeira, Sao Jorge.

You can see all of these on Ellis Island site for additional information.

Thank you for providing this information.  As of now, I don't have middle names, so don't see a connection yet even though my Matto's fame fro Sao Jorge.  I'm sure there's a connection there somewhere.  Thank you again.

Before the word spreads I want to inform the list that I am no longer connected to the CCA (Center of Knowledge of the Azores. I was transfered to another position. So I am back to business, as to what genealogy research and records transcription concerns.

As far as I know the project will continue to develop.

Ola Primo João,
I hope this is a good transfer for you both personally and professionally.  Did it have to do with the newly appointed/elected director you mentioned to me last year?  I trust you will do an  excellent job of performing your new duties whatever they may be.  Is the CCA genealogy project still funded and moving forward?

I hope you are doing well and your mother is still fine.  I have  been taking a portuguese language class the last two months......I think I am a bit slower than most of the students in the class.  I am the only student who has not been raised in a portuguese-speaking home.  So I am slowly learning some of the language, but enjoying the process.  The teacher is from Cais do Pico and has known some of my new-found primos on Pico since his childhood.  Very small world sometimes, as you may recall from my meeting with you.

I wanted to again ask your advice about researching my early Pico family not listed on the Amorim Pico website.  Do you think you have resources that might take families from Pico to Sao Jorge in the early 1700's?  I will send you my family member genealogy roadblocks if you like and I would very much like to ask for your research services if it is OK with you.

Leslie and I hope you have a very wonderful Christmas holiday season with your family and are enjoyng life in beautiful Terceira.

Beijinhos,
Dennis (Diniz)

PS.  this is how my portuguese teacher say friends say goodbye in their emails.......is that true in your experience...just curious.

TERRA. List of survivors in inclued a sister in law as Mrs. Manuel Mattos of Petuluma, Cal. I have found some of the family's members listed, but not all. It would be nice to meet more. Mattos is a rather common Portuguese name and I have them on my dad's side as well as my mom's side.  My mom's mother was a Mattos from Pico.  On my dad's side he had his sister that married a Mattos.  This Mattos I referred to as Jose (I'm not sure that is correct) had a brother I thought was Manuel and they had their mother that all came from Sao Jorge.  They settled on a farm in Santa Rosa area and my aunt could not do the farm work after his death so she sold the farm and moved to a house near downtown Petaluma.  I am sure I have this information in print.  I have a stack of papers about 15 to 20 inches high and is an awesome job to go through to find anything.

Al; I made a big misteak, I said Mrs. Manuel Mattos was a sister in law to Miguel Terra. I was wrong. She is a sister to Miguel. She is a also a sister to my great grandmother. All lived in and around Petaluma Cal. Her maiden name was Amelia Terra. I have more information and I am looking though my stack of papers. Al Rodrigues
