I have been searching for the baptismal record of Antonio Jose das Neves in Candelaria, Pico. His parents were Joao Jose das Neves and Francisca Mariana. I have found other children from these parents but not Antonio yet. However, after consulting the NEPS site and their genealogy lists i looked under the baptismal record for a child Eleuterio (not sure on spelling), and I found a note in the margin of the record that may suggest he might have gone by Antonio.

Anyways, I wanted to see what other thought about the note in the margins of the record. It is from 2 Apr 1782 in the Concelho of Madelenda, Freguesia of Candelaria, Pico, pg. 7 on the CCA website of Candelaria Baptismos 1782-1793.

Any info would be appreciated.

David,

It says when he did his "Crisma/Confirmation" passou a chamar-se Antonio".  At about the age of 12 years children are anointed by the bishop and reaffirm their faith.  Everyone can choose a different name which in most cases remains symbolic, however in this case the priest is saying that Eleuterio from then on was called Antonio.
