I've posted about this several times, no success but I try to post
every once in awhile when I get a little bit more information in hopes
maybe this time I will find a cousin!

I am at a dead end with Jose Pacheco and his wife Maria Rosalina Moniz
(Possibly Luiz) who were from Nordeste, Sao Miguel. I don't know where
to start because I don't have a parish so this has been very
challenging for me. They were born in approximately the 1850s. I know
this is vague but I wanted to at least give it a shot!

Hi Jesse,

I saw your post and was surprised to see the names Pacheco and Moniz.
Rosalina Moniz Pacheco is my Deceased Mothers Sister living in Canada and
her Husband who is also deceased was named Jose Moniz Pacheco.
They were both born in the early 1900s and you said your Ancestors were born
in 1850s. I am wondering if this is a strange coincidence or maybe we have
something here. Please forward me more information.

Jesse,
Do you know when they immigrated? If you can find out from
Ancestry.com, then you can search the Azores site which has the
passport applications in Portugese. These list the town from which
our ancestors were from, not just the island. By the way, my mother
was from Salga, which is in the Nordeste area. Moniz, Soares, and
Pacheco are their surnames.

Hi Jesse,

I only post occasionally, also. My 2nd husband is descended from a
Jose PACHECO, also probably born 1850/1860 on Sao Miguel. All I've
been able to find out is that he and his wife were in a village
bordering on Ponta Degada when their son, Antonio PACHECO was born
there in the 1880's. "Tony" left the Azores and came to
Massachusetts ~1905 and married near Boston. He was killed in a
car accident ~1927, and his angry widow spent the rest of her life
telling her grandchildren that they had no PACHECO relatives in MA.
But, I have heard from a researcher that Tony did have relatives in
the Boston area. I don't know anything more than that. There
should be a few of my postings in the archives of this group.

(And, I've posted many times at www.rootsweb.com and sometimes
at www.genforum.com )

Jesse,
We may be cousins also.  I have an ancestor name Dona Margarida Pacheco who was born in "Sao Jorge, Nordeste, Sao Miguel, Azores.  Unfortunately I have no other info on Margarida except her daughter, Ana Silva Mendonca was married 22 May 1743 in the same village.  Wish I had more to help you out.

Wow, thank you everyone, its great to finally get some possible
connections for this brick wall!

Carolyn:
Unfortunately that's just about all of the information I have. Jose and
Maria had a son, Joao, who married Maria da Resuricao Andrade from Lagoa.

Betty:
Hm, there could be a connection here but I think Nordeste is too far
from Ponta Delgada for us to have a match right here. I don't know much
about this family though, and their son DID marry a woman from Lagoa so
it's a big possibility that there was some movement by them around the
island. Their son, my ancestor, is the only child of theirs I know of as
of now.

Maria:
I'm not sure if Joao and Rosalina ever came to America but I know their
son Joao came in about 1902. I've spent hours and hours searching for
his immigration information but cannot locate it for him or his wife.

Iris:
I don't know the parish but for some reason I remember having thought
it might be Sao Jorge at one point. But I have no idea whether or not
that is so. I will keep you in mind though, and will most likely send an
updated post if I find more information.

Jessie,

My Grandfather was also named Joao Moniz Pacheco. He married my grandmother
Rosa da Conceicao Reis form Faial da Terra, both of them never came to
America, but most of there Children did! That would defiantly coincide with
your dates.
I think the problem we all run into repeatly is the names, they are all very
similar. Its enough to confuse anyone.
I will keep my ears open for any information I come across.

In Genealogias de S. Miguel e Santa Maria, by Rodrigo Rodrigues, we can read that your Ana da Silva Mendonça married to Manuel do Rego de Oliveira in 22-05-1743 at CAPELAS (not at S. Jorge, Nordeste)  and that she was baptized in Nordeste.

Hi Iris,

I have looked over the Extractos de Casamentos de Ernesto do Canto (marriages) from S. Jorge, Nordeste. I found no one MENDONÇA... May be you are interested in asking for those certificates. May be they will enlighten you.

This is what I’ve found:

27.05.1702 – Manuel da Silva Pereira, widower, married to Margarida Pacheco, daughter of Manuel Fernandes and Maria Cardoso.

08.05.1702 – Francisco de Simas, widower of Águeda Cardosa, married to Bárbara de Sousa, daughter of Manuel Fernandes and Maria Cardoso.

Margarida  and Bárbara may be sisters…

10.10.1677 – Manuel da Silva Pereira, son of Francisco Pereira and Maria da Silva, married to Bárbara de Sousa, dauhgter of Francisco Correia and Maria de Sousa.

Hi again,

Sometimes when I type at 5 am I can't remember the important names.
I just wanted to add that my husband's great-grandparents on his
father's side were:
Joao PACHECO and Jacintha COSTA
Francisco MOURA and Philomina ROSE
The PACHECO family was in the village of Sao Roque, beside Ponta
Delgada, around1880. The MOURA family was from Sao Miguel but I
haven't been able to find out which village they came from, or
whether they came from another Island first. Antonio PACHECO, 20,
and Elsie MOURA, 12, both came to MA/US ~1905, and married in
Cambridge, MA ~1912.

Betty

(Another researcher told me that another PACHECO family in Cambridge,
MA, during the 1900's came from the same village.) (Elsie and her
sisters, Mrs. Rosa PERRY and Mrs. Carolina MEDEIROS, were all widowed
before their time. They lived to ~1980 in Cambridge.)
