Found on Ancestry.com a California WWI Soldier Service card for Anthony John Freitas born Nov 11, 1899.  Father listed as Manuel A. Freitas and Mother Mary F or L Valine.  Both born Azores, all living at 2212 11th Street Sacramento.  Anthony died 14 Jun 1919 where? .  On Find a Grave, found the family plot  located at Saint Josephs Cemetery, Sacramento.  On Ancestry, I found s possible 1900 census record for Manuel Fridtz age 35, Francis age 26, Mamie  ( married Senna) Age 9, Antone, age 6 months, Washtonton TWP, Yolo co., California.  My interest is locating OBIT for Anthony and village of birth for Mary (Frances) / L  Valine.  Is anyone researching this family?

Sandra,

I'm pretty sure neither of these people are from your Lajes do Pico line of Valim.
I believe I'm related to this Freitas man, but still working on proof.

I am not researching this family but suggest that it is very likely that Anthony died in Sacramento, California, or possibly Yolo County.  If you are not in the Sacramento area, try contacting the Sacramento County Library and I believe they will do a search for the obituary for you since you have a date of death.  It is quite possible that the obituary will be in the Sacramento Bee or Sacramento Union newspaper from that time period whether the death was in Sacramento County or Yolo County.  I believe the California State Archive also holds these newspapers on microfilm and it's possible they will do a search as well.

Sandra,

In my family tree, I have a Manuel Azevedo Freitas born in Piedade, Pico, Azores. He died on 18 Mar 1898 but had a son named Manuel (no other name listed) who was born in Piedade, Pico on 11 Mar 1873.

Hi Sandra,

Yea, the Valim book has that line of Pereira Valim, but not my line of Goncalves Valim.

There are so many named Valim from Piedade in the 1600s that it is difficult to estimate how closely these two main Valim lines are related. I have many Valim lines and they might not connect until the early 1600s or even late 1500s.

And the same can be said for your Valim in Lajes.
While looking at your oldest Valim ancestor, I notice I am estimating he was a brother of the oldest Valim from the Valim book, but it's just a guess based on the fact both are Pereira Valim.

Yes, I do think this Freitas person and his Valim wife are both from Piedade and if I am right about this Freitas link, he is rather closely related to my Freitas there. He would be the grandson of my ancestors.

Searching and responding by phone. Please forgive brevity and typos. The Library of Congress Digital Memory Newspaper collection is quite good. Sacramento newspapers to 1921 are full text searchable. Use the advanced search and you can find words within a certain number of words from each other. Strange thing is the two different "Manuel's" listed here....

This is June 23, 1898. Timing isn't right, but perhaps they are related. There were more results to go through.

Lionel  Question... Mary Augusta Francis Fernandes, listed d.5-21-1945 the same Maria Perry Perreira married to King Fernandes (Joaquin) listed on page 223 and also on page 304 under John Maria Silva of  book Portuguese Pioneers of the Sacramento Area?
Question... Lucy Francis d 6-23-1948, wife of Henry Rose listed in the book?

Sandra,

Re your question about Maria Perry Perreira on p.223 and on p.304: Both entries came from Thelma Rose, so I assume that's correct.  As for Lucy Francis, wife of  Henry Rose, I have them in my files as parents of John Rose, Henry Rose, and Mary Rose=_______Owens. The latter couple were parents of Pat and Michael Owens.

Don't know if that helps you.

By the way, I drove by looking for the house at 2212 11th Street. There was 2210 and 2214 but no 2212.
