Yes, my own ancestor also jumped ship in the Bay of Islands.  If you look into the situation of these whalers and the conditions they were working under it is no surprise that when they got to New Zealand, so much like their homeland, that this is where they wanted to put down their roots, after years at sea.

NZ is very like the Azores, and given our proximity to the whaling routes, not a surprising outcome at all, really, that they'd choose to stay here.

My own ancestor came from Faial, and despite every conceivable NZ record found and thirty years of hopeful research, including a visit to the Azores, I still have no family (details) for him, apart from his descendants.

My research in the Azores covers the following families:
Emanuel Diaz (anglicised and followed all his life) b. 31 August 1840, Master Mariner (naturalisation and mariner's registration papers)
Francis Diaz b. 11 May 1842 Pike Peak (assumed to mean Pico) Master Mariner (mariner's registration papers) ~ drowned at sea 7 Sep 1876, son and heir emigrated to Australia
Francis (Frank) Joseph b. 1 Feb 1835 "Ferringal/Fergangran" (translated by Azoreans at being Faja Grande, Flores) Master Mariner (naturalisation and mariner's registration papers)

As previously mentionned, Frank Joseph went to the USA for a time, (1870s) and we have a collection of letters written back to NZ by his wife, in which she talks of his siblings being in San Francisco and in Gold Hill, Nevada.  However.... there are no names provided in the correspondence.

    Cheers Tony...

Ahh yes shopping, best not to get in the way of a good bargain! :)

Trouble with researching the Azores, all the names are so similar &
get copied through many generations... Our GG Grandfather also has a
    brother named Antonio.

I'm planning a visit to Flores early next year - hopefully by then you
will have learned some more info & I would be happy to do a little
'digging' for you when I'm there.

I heard a story that our GG grandfather decided to jump ship (hide out
on the dock) in Wellington due to mistreatment/not being paid. He was
eventually found and ordered back on to the ship, and his employers
ordered to pay him etc. As they were leaving the harbour, Jose
literally jumped ship at Barretts reef & swam to safety. The rest as
    they say is history!

    Cheers,
    Anita

Anita.
If you get to Flores, be sure to drop by the museum in Santa Cruz and talk to my cousin Joao Antonio Gomes Vieira, retired director of the Museum. He sometimes hangs out there but now writes books, some of which are about Whaling. His father was a whaling Captain.  He might be able to give you some leads.
