Hi Cheri,
I wanted to know the link where I can order a new DNA test done for my
grandmothers side. I am not sure if you remember me but I had one done
about 5 months ago for the Pregana (Pragana) side of my family. Now I
want to do the Soares Medeiros side. I am still trying to figure out
how to read the results but I am slowly understanding it. I don't
think we had any matches so maybe on the Soares Mediros side we will.
After that I want to do the Vicente side but we now use the name
Vincent. I will be waiting for your reply.. Mahalo, Kathy

I am new - I am very interested in the DNA - how does one go about
it? My grandfather was Francisco Da Silva from Mosteiros, Sao Miguel,
Azores - I have been able to go back to the early 1700 in the same
village. I was fortunate to connect with someone who had already done
a tree that my family connected to.Thanks, Ellen

Ellen,

If you want to test from your Francisco da Silva line, you will need the son of the son of the son from him (basically, his grandson or great-grandson).  All men, all the way back to Francisco.  That would be your DNA candidate to test.

Ordering info was in the message to Kathy.

Hi Cheri,
So, Franciscio was my grandfather, so I would need one of my uncles or
nephews? What if I wanted to test from the female side (Anna de
Medeiros) - since that would be my g-grandmother and she only had one
child (my grandfather Francisco da silva) could I use my mother or
does that line stop because she had only a son? thanks. Ellen

Hi Ellen,

I am co-administrator of the Azores DNA project with Cheri and will
answer your question.

If you wanted to test your g-grandmother (Anna de Medeiros) and her only
child was your grandfather (Francisco da Silva) then only your
grandfather (Francisco da Silva would carry the MTDNA from your great
grandmother (Anna de Medeiros).

The only other option would be if your great grandmother (Anna de
Medeiros) had a sister that had a male descendent that is still alive or
a female descendent that had children that are still alive. Then they
could be tested.

Hi Ellen,

Sorry for the late reply.

Yes, for Francisco, you would need one of your uncles (I'm assuming that they are his sons) or one of your nephews (I'm assuming that they are Francisco's grandsons).

On your Anna de Mederios - as Rick said you'd have to use one of Anna's sister's and trace the line forward with females, although the testee can be male or female.  Let me explain it the other way around - if you wanted your mtDNA tested, it would test your mother's mother's mother's line - all women all the way back.  If you had a brother and he tested, the results would be the same as yours (since you probably have the same mother).  MtDNA is passed from a mother (female) to ALL her children (therefore all can test their mtDNA line), but only the females (who become mothers) can pass it on.  Since Anna (female) had only 1 son (male) and he's deceased, that won't work.  So you'd have to find Anna's sister, her daughter(s), and then the next generation of daughers (I think).  I'm not sure what years Anna lived from so I'm unsure of how many generations forward you have to come before finding the testee.

It's rather confusing until you get into it.  Actually, confusing might be an understatement!

Cheri,

How many people have actually had matches in your database.  Close matches?

Hi Elaine,

The admin pages keeps freezing up and I have company from out of town for this week.  So I'm trying to answer the question, but it may be a couple of more days.
