Anyone have any idea of what a French man would be doing in the Azores ca 1900?  Were there many French people living in the Azores then and, if so, why would that be?

Thank you.

Visiting relatives ?

Many of the original 15th century settlers of the Azores came from the Flanders region, a byproduct of the Hundred Years’ Anglo-French war and the English Treaty of Windsor signed with Portugal in the late 14th century.

Yolanda and all,

Were there any French men and why would they be in the Azores about 1895-1905?

Well, I don't Know if you can read Portuguese, but i am sending you the 1900 Census made in Portugal. ( its too heavy to send to google groups)

There you can see that there were all the foreigners that existed in each island of Açores. Or you can download it for yourself.

There you  can see even how many french reside on each island.

Yes. They existed, and lived on Azores.

And there where usually a lot of english and french on the islands

The reasons why are as usual as the present days.
Businesse affairs, trading, commerce,  conection by marriage.

But that replay would need a very long and serious research involving a lot of records search.....

De nada.

E. When we visited Flores in 2000 we stayed in a hotel  that we were told had once been part of a French garrison. Don't know the time period.

I wasn't aware there were census records available. Could you please
give more information about this Portuguese census?

Same of  historical Portuguese census are available on line in this web site since the making of the first european census.

The web site is of the National Institute de Estatistica (statistics) that belongs to the Portuguese Government.

These census are also published.

The information about each and everyone is also available in the web site.

Ahoy There!

Go Again in the page.....

http://censos.ine.pt/xportal/xmain?xpid=INE&xpgid=censos_historia_pt

maybe... you should try To Click in one of the Census.

let´s say 1864 and then it will appear

http://censos.ine.pt/xportal/xmain?xpid=INE&xpgid=censos_historia_pt_1864

In this page...on the Left side....You will see Several Documents

( that look like pictures but are not, because the Portuguese government has no sense of beauty or fun, trust me. I would Know!)

Click again in one of the pictures

You will see on the left the words

 Publicação

(picture of a book cover)

Questionario

(pictures of questions)

Legislação

(Law stuff)

Then click again on the picture of Book cover that is actually a PDF. All are PDF

and download and save for your PC

OK?

Try it and feed back.

MY best

Dear Yolanda,

I have looked at the website as well and clicked on and opened the pdf
for the publicacio for the 1864 census, and although it has a lot of
information, the actual census information with the breakdown of all
the people in each household is not listed. Do you know where that
actual data is located?

Thanks,

David

It appears that my posts are getting a lot of  communication problems.

I am not understanding all these doubts about the census.

This is the actual census data published of the PDF on line publications..

That's way the census were made, to provide general statistical information about the population of Portugal.

Please see its definition on

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Census

SO I have send The Census data, that's what the publications are.

And i never said that i was sending the questionnaire's made for the Census.

or did I?

The  Questionnaire's ( is this the right word ?) im guessing thats what you are asking about.

Same are in Torre do Tombo,  That you can see on line. NOT THE  ACTUAL DOCUMENTS, Just the arquivistical description.

but i have no idea where is the original questionarios  made by each Concelho, Freguesia, aldeia,  casa  of Portugal in each Census ever made.

BUT You can  always try to Call Torre do Tombo Or O Instituto Nacional de Estatistica.

Yolanda,

I understood they were statistical data sources you sent to me which was in answer to my French in Azores question and provided me the answer I was looking for.  Information was most interesting.

I think others might have thought they were actual personal census records that we have on line here in the US and most of which we have to pay for to access (there are a few free ones).  It is not this type of personal data.

Hopefully, this will clear up the confusion.

Thank you so much for your participation on this list and for passing information along to us.

The actual census sheets are not here. These are publications about the results of the census and a blank questionare form. There is no possibility that a

10 Mb PDF file contains the entire census results of a country

Repost for Maggie Sutton:
<<

Yolanda,
Bom Dia - do you have any records from Calheta, Sao Jorge? My family is from the Calheta / Ribeira Seca / Manadas / Urzelina areas in Sao Jorge and I know that most of those records came out of the offices in Calheta. Affonso Mancebo / Machado Homem / Machado Azevedo / Carvalho
