Hi everyone,
i was wondering if someone could recommend a few books on Genealogy
from Flores Island. I was born there but grew up in canada. my

access to many records. My fathers family is from the Mosteiro area
and my mothers family from Lages das Flores and Fazenda das Flores. i
can only go back three generations and some of that is missing. i want
to start with the strongest line i have and that's my mothers maternal
side. If anyone has any conecting info or leads or book titles and
authors would be greatly appreciated. So here's the information.

My Grandmother:

Hello Lex,

Welcome to the list. It appears your great grand parents (your
grandmothers parents) were born in the time after the records were
filmed. You are lucky you have their birth dates and the village which
they were born so the archives should not have a problem in finding
them. There are no books that I am aware of so your best bet is to get
copies of their birth records from the archives. Once you have these you
will be able to research your family using the filmed records which can
be requested at the LDS family history centers.

This would be a good website to check out
http://www.dholmes.com/rocha1.html there are other sites that may prove
helpful perhaps some others will add to this.

Lex,

There is a Flores marriage book that covers all freguesias.  I'm not a Flores researcher, so I am unsure of the years.  There are other Flores researchers on this list that own the book and can help.

There are also some indices for selected freguesias compiled by Al Ramos.  He is on this list.  If you are in his freguesias, I'm sure he'll contact you.

There are baptisms, marriages and deaths for Flores online from the Centro de Conhecimento dos Acores (CCA) online.  They might go up to 1900 or so.  You can look at them here: http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/

Other Flores researchers on this list should be able to provide more sources for you.

Lex,

Have you used the CCA website? You'll find all the parish records for Flores online

Here is the great grandmothers Baptism record found there.

I may be related to you. I have connections to a Jose Caetano Goncalves, one is Philomena's paterno.  Also I have some Trinidade Vieiras. My direct Vieira ancestors are from Corvo by way of Cedros on the north coast.

I have a distant cousin I've worked with who's family is from Lajes that are Goncalves Vieiras and are related to Novo and Xavier . They came to the Central valley of California around Stockton about 1900.

I have another family member whos ancestors go back to Lajes, this :

2.  MANUEL FRANCISCO2 GONCALVES (FRANCISCO JOSE1)  He married MARIA DE JESUS 11 Jan 1847 in Nossa Senhora do Rosario, Lajes das Flores, Azores, daughter of ANTONIO COELHO and MARIA DE JESUS.

Child of MANUEL GONCALVES and MARIA DE JESUS is:

3.                i.    MARIA DE JESUS3 DE NATIVIDAD, b. 02 Nov 1854, Flores; d. 20 Jan 1928, Red Bluff, Tehama County, California.

Lex,
I have the marriage book for Flores, "Casais Das Flores E do Corvo).  When Eric posted the baptism record for you grandmother Filomena, I checked for the marriages of her parents Antonio Jose Goncalves and Maria do Rosario Vieira.  They were married in Nossa Senhora da Rosario, Lages on May 23, 1891.  He was 53 years old and the son of Jose Caetano Goncalves and Ana Coelho. (It looks like Conceicao on Filomena bap. record) . Maria do Rosario Vieira was 33 years old and the dg. of Francisco Christiano Goncalves and Florinda da Trindade Vieira.

I could not find a marriage record for Jose Caetano Goncalves and Ana Coelho.

Francisco Cristiano Goncalves son of Jose Caetano Lourenco (Bispo) and Catarina de Sao Jose were married on Aug. 30, 1856 to Florinda da Trindade dg. of Joao Antonio Vieira and Ana Florinda da Trindade. P.38

I found a record for a Joao Antonio Vieira and Ana da Trindade  married on Nov. 17, 1826 but because of the name of Ana not having Florinda, I wasn't sure if this was the right couple.  There were no other record with the name Ana Florinda. If you want the information let me know.

Jose Caetano Lourenco Bispo son of Manoel Lourenco Bispo and Ana Lourenco was married March 31, 1805 to Catarina de Sao Jose dg. of Antonio Francisco Goncalves and Ana de Sao Jose. P. 59

Manoel Lourenco Bispo son of Antonio Rodrigues Bispo and Catarina Lourenco (d), widow of 1st wife Barbara Furtado and 2nd wife Rosa Maria married on June 6, 1780 to Ana Lourenco dg. of Jose de Fraga and Joana Lourenco. p 84

Antonio Francisco Goncalves son of Joao Pimentel Ferreira and Isabel Furtado married on April 15, 1790 to Ana de Sao Jose dg. of Antonio Pimentel Gomes and Maria de Sao Jose p.17

All the above marriages are from Nossa Senhor da Rosario, Lages

Eric,

Not to hijack this thread, but how are you getting such a nice clean
looking scan of the entry? I couldn't find a way to download directly
from the Azorean archives, and the ones at LDS are all in B/W.

Robert,

I'm using the Azores Government Knowledge Center site- the CCA

After I scroll through and find the page I want I open a Microsoft Paint window, then use the print screen button on the keyboard, go back to the Paint program and
paste it there.  Then I use "save as" to change it to JPEG and name it, and place on the desktop. Then close the Paint program and open the saved image, which by default is
Microsoft Office Picture and Fax Viewer. Then use the edit tools to crop it and resize it. Bingo. It takes a while at the start, but now I can do it in no time.
